21 MAY 2006

Malacañang press release on Nur Misuari’s rebellion case  last May 21, 2006:  quote “Press Secretary Ignacio R. Bunye said Malacañang is keeping its hands off the case of jailed Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) Nur Misuari.

Quote “”Many well-meaning persons and organizations have been seeking the release of former ARMM governor Nur Misuari, but this is exclusively within the sole prerogative and wisdom of the court trying his case,” Bunye said in his column, “View From The Palace” which comes out tomorrow (Monday, May 22).

Quote “Sayed Kassem El-Masry, adviser to the secretary of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), has appealed to the government for Misuari’s release, saying the participation of the MNLF leader in the peace talks would help the process move forward.

Quote “El-Masry heads the OIC delegation visiting Mindanao as part of the agreement secured by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo from OIC leaders during her recent four-day state visit to Saudi Arabia.

Quote “El-Masry, however, was reported as saying that the powerful Islamic organization would want Misuari released through the constitutional and judicial process.

Quote “Jesus Dureza, presidential adviser on the peace process, shared Bunye’s stand on the issue, saying the President cannot just tell the judge handling Misuari’s case to release him.

Quote “Bunye explained that the government had accorded Misuari “all the medical assistance and humanitarian treatment that is possible under the law.”

Quote “ “The rest is left to the independent judgment of the court,” he said.” Closed-quote.

Quote “On January 14, The Philippine Star published an article entitled, “Free Wi-Fi access in the Metro” by Eden Estopace. The article gave a comprehensive coverage on free wi-fi internet access, however, it was single-sourced. The reporter only included direct quotations and paraphrased statements from Liza delos Reyes, WiGO’s chief operating office, the company that is providing the free internet access.

Quote “Though the report explained thoroughly about how the free wi-fi access would be beneficial to Flilipinos, the Philippine Journalist’s Code of Ethics says that, “It is the duty of the writer to report the other side and to scrupulously report and interpret the news, taking care not to suppress essential facts nor to distort the truth by omission or improper emphasis.” In this report, the writer only had one source for the news, and worse, the bias of the story is with the source. The article served as a press release for the company that offers this free wi-fi service.” Closed-quote.
