Quote “Former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino’s lighthearted apology to ousted president Joseph “Erap” Estrada might have been said in jest but she is not taking it back, a spokeswoman said Tuesday.
Quote “According to Aquino spokeswoman Deedee Sytangco, the former president’s statement was merely in response to Estrada’s speech, dismissing speculations that it was a scripted apology.
Quote “”[Cory said] that she said it in jest, as a response to the light speech of ex-president Erap. She too was surprised that it was made into a big issue,” Sytangco said in a radio dzMM interview.
Quote “”Just a clarification, it was not a prepared speech,” she added.
Quote “Sytangco pointed out that Aquino’s speech was not intended to rally against the Arroyo government. Rather, she said that Aquino made the apology in light of the people’s “humorous and very light” mood during the launching of former Speaker Jose de Venecia’s book “The Global Filipino” at the Podium in Mandaluyong City, where she and Estrada were guests.
Quote “Although it was not meant to be taken too seriously, Sytangco said that Aquino will not be taking back her apology to Estrada.
Quote “”It was true she said sorry on that stage,” she said.
Quote “According to Estrada, however, such a statement can never pass as a joke.
Quote “”It’s hard to think of it that way, especially with speakers, congressmen, and many others present [in the event],” Estrada said in separate dzMM interview.”
