Article:
http://www.rappler.com/sports/by-sport/boxing-mma/36589-darren-young-wwe-gay
Commentary:
This commentary is about a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) wrestler, Darren Young, ‘coming out’ as gay. First of all, this article is classified under ‘Boxing and MMA’; WWE is neither boxing nor MMA. Wrestling, MMA, boxing; yes they are arguably similar, but these terms are not interchangeable. To the hardcore fans, it can even be considered offensive to put them all in one category.
For the records, I am not homophobic, I am not against gays – but I believe Rappler has been too ‘pro-gay’. I have heard many people complain about Rappler ‘exaggerating’ or ‘over-emphasizing’ homosexuality in their website. There were several instances for this; according to a couple of friends, a couple of months ago, a picture of Georgina Wilson kissing another girl was used as the headline in Rappler’s website. No offence to the LGBT community, but I find it unnecessary as there were many different news articles that is more headline worthy than that. It is, to a certain extent, understandable (because the founder is a lesbian), but it’s not acceptable.
Back to the article, Rappler almost never reports about WWE; they wrote two articles about WWE besides this one: One about Wrestlemania (arguably the annual biggest wrestling event of the year – it’s like the Super Bowl of wrestling) in April 2012, and the other about a half-Filipino wrestler, Dave Batista, getting an acting job in a movie in March 2013. Writing about Dave Batista is understandable because he’s half Filipino so here is some sort of relevance. But Darren Young is not related to the Philippines whatsoever, what is so significant about him to the Filipinos? This article would have been more ‘acceptable’ if let’s say they constantly wrote about WWE. But the way that they never reported about WWE and then suddenly it’s about a wrestler coming out, it puts extra emphasis on it.Furthermore, let’s say they feel they should update on WWE, there were so many different things that they could have written – 2013 Wrestlemania, death of Paul Bearer (a legend in the wrestling industry).
Some basketball player is gay. Some football player is gay. Some actor is gay. Who cares? Let these people live their lives. Why are things like this even NEWS? I have many gay friends and I’ve never seen them get any interview or any TV shows. They never got any special treatment and was featured in the news.
Lastly, I personally feel that this article was written because Rapper feels that this is what people would ‘want to read about’. No surprise there, it easily became one of the most shared articles on Rappler.
