Work hard, strive honestly, & the odds will be in your favor: Reminders to Students b4 end-of-sem

As planned and scheduled, we will have our 50-pointer test next week.
All those who are scheduled to make their presentations, i.e., all who have not made any presentation, should be prepared this week, and should be set up before the start of classhours.

For ethics students: The final media monitor (after the 12th media monitor) can be posted here as comments or links. Only one more will be allowed and any or all bonus posts not yet submitted.

For all students: Please do not be absent when the 50-pointer test is given. No more additional points, no more additional credit, and no more bonus points will be given after the 50-pointer test. A final reiteration of how grades are computed will be shown. Only students who are flunking not due to absences but on account of lack of points , or whose class standing is 5.0 or 4.0 not due to absences but due to lack of points, may take the final exam on finals week but NOT for additional points but only for the purpose of determining whether they will pass or fail, i.e., only for the purpose of determining whether their grade would be 3.0 or 5.0. The die is cast after the 50-pointer – the only highest grade of those who are flunking after the 50-pointer — should they decide to take a final exam — is 3.0. As practised before, no special treatment will be given to any student for any reason. Students who have exceeded three absences and who did not drop the class will automatically get a grade of 5.0 as provided for in the University Code.

Prepare well  and the odds  will well like  a  tide  on your side.

It is still a question whether or not it is unethical to disclose the identity of minors involved in a crime. However, in crimes wherein the
reputation, dignity, or innocence of minors will not be put in harm, identity may be disclosed if given consent by the parents or family and
especially when the the issue is of public interest.

An article released by Rappler on November 24 entitled “US police shoot dead boy, 12, holding toy gun” reported an incident wherein a Cleveland police

shot and killed a 12-year-old African American boy, Tamir Rice, waving around what turned out to be a toy gun at a playground. This is similar to John Crawford’s case who was shot by the police in a Walmart store while holding a toy gun. With the occurrence of the two crimes, there is indeed a need for Ohio to pass a bill that shall allow the the police to distinguish fake firearms. Thus, state lawmaker Alicia Reese introduced a bill to require all toy guns to be brightly colored or have prominent fluorescent stripes.

Because the issue at hand concerns the entire state and because it is obvious that the dignity of the child will not be jeopardized, it is ethical to disclose his identity.

  2. Good day, Ma’am Lambino!

    Here is my media monitor:

I stumbled upon two different news items from two different news organizations pertaining to the same topic. The news items were about the survey that polling firm Social Weather Stations (SWS) conducted regarding Filipinos’ optimism over quality of life. Business World and ABS-CBNNews.com.

Both news items indicated the period when the survey was conducted and the sample size. However, both news items did not indicate what the questions were, so we cannot be very sure that the results are reliable. Of the two news items, the item published by ABS-CBNNews.com did not indicate the margin of error, which the Business World article included. It should be noted that the margin of error, given the secrecy of the subscribers/sponsors of such surveys, is a way of showing a survey result’s transparency and reliability.

  3. Hi Ma’am. Here’s my post for the bonus media monitor.

    BONUS MEDIA MONITOR: SURVEY

There was an article published last November 12 on inquirer.net.

The news was simply about Binay and how he reacted saying that his dropped rating in the survey conducted by Social Weather Stations last September doesn’t affect the VP after all; that even though his rating dropped 10 points, from 41 in June to 31 on the present survey, he is still the frontrunner in the 2016 presidential election.

In reporting survey, there are some factors which are considered ethical and some of these are very evident in this news report.

First, the exact sample size and design was not reported. It just mentioned that there are 1,600 respondents who participated in the survey. We still do not know if there is an equal distribution in the sample to say that the sample is a representative of the population.

Second, the margin of error was not mentioned. We do not know the chance of the survey being miscalculated.

Third, the method of interviewing was not mentioned after all. This is related to the first reason stated because methods have their own pros and cons. We don’t know if the method used in this survey can represent the entire population or not.

Here’s the link of the news report.

  4. Link to article: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/641520/binay-rating-falls-rivals-up

This article refers to to the survey conducted by Pulse Asia. Although the article included the date of the survey course, margin of error, and number of respondents; it did not include the sampling technique. Even though they interviewed 1,200 respondents, if this was not done by random sampling then the results cannot be generalized. Not revealing sampling technique also allows the data to be manipulated if they interviewed a select group of people who would give the answer they want.

” Survey concludes Internet access should be a human right”

An article posted in Yahoo News, featured a Survey that concluded Internet access as being a human right. The article was not able to elaborate how the survey was able to come up with the conclusion, nor was it able to explain the methodology that was employed in the study. The exact questions that were asked were also not stated in the said report. The writer was able to mention the sample size, the countries participating in the survey and the research organization that conducted it. (The CIGI-Ipsos survey of 23,376 people in 24 countries was unveiled at the start of a two-day meeting in Ottawa on Internet governance.) However, the margin of error was not stated together with the confidence level.

  6. BONUS MEDIA MONITOR: HOSTAGE-TAKING

    http://www.philstar.com/metro/2014/08/16/1358073/2-hostage-incidents-reported-qc

The link posted above is a report about two hostage-taking incidents that happened in Quezon City, Philippines. Both incidents characterized good news reporting about hostage-taking incidents. However, I will focus on the first incident since this report, for me, is more flawed.

The first incident involved Andrew Pabustan, the hostage-taker of Gina Sason and her son, Nate Aldrin. Pabustan is also involved in another murder case in another barangay. This is a good example of a hostage-taking report because the role of the journalist in this article was excellently and professionally played. The journalist was only reporting and not acting as the negotiator in the incident. The report was factual and first confirmed by authorities. Also, the pictures that were shown did not cause harm to anyone. However, it is questionable whether this is an example of good news reporting or not. This could have been an excellent news reporting if only the name of the minor victim wasn’t disclosed to the public. We have strictly studied in class that reports that involve children must not give even the tiniest hint about the children’s identities.

  7. Hi, Maam! The comment above this one is my bonus media monitor. This comment, on the other hand, is just my media monitor for this week.

    http://www.philstar.com/nation/2014/11/24/1395366/22-hurt-cdo-highway-crash

The link posted above is a report about the 22 passengers that were hurt when a bus slammed into a truck loaded with sand in Cagayan de Oro City. This is an example of good news reporting. The news wasn’t sensationalized but instead, direct to the point. Other necessary details such as the name of the driver, the hospital that the victims were rushed to, and the charge against the driver were also stated to make the news clear and understandable.
