9am deadline extended to 7pm, see details here

The 9am deadline is extended to 7pm. The assistant has been instructed to send the suggested format but she has gone home. She would be able to send it when she gets in at 8am or 9 am. But…here it is, suggested format, basic sports writing: for 7-8 paragraphs. Lead par: Report result in the first 5- 7 words, use action words, then follow with significance. For action words “defeats” “wins” “beats” are too generic & overused. The following have been used this season: “UP trumps UE __-__ (score)”; “Maroons slay the Warriors __-__ (score)” “UP stuns La Salle __-__ (score)” “UP nips La Salle __-___”  You can use your own action words — remember: action words show your interpretation. Then, for significance, report why significant for UP or DLSU (Is it the first back to back for UP? Is it La Salle’s first loss? UP’s first win over La Salle? Their first winning “streak”? Etc. 2nd par: More significance (historical, implications, etc.) 3rd par: Highlights: What point of the game did UP peak, what raised its game, which athletes &,what plays. 4th par: More highlights: Did DLSU try to catch up, how, which athletes, what plays. 5th par: More highlights: Describe the last minutes when La Salle made a full court press… Then intentional fouls one after another … Etc. How did UP handle the full court press of DLSU, etc. 6th par: Transition to stats: Highest pointer, highest rebounder, etc. 7th par: Interviews (of athletes, or coaches, or organizers, or school officials, or students) If you don’t have interviews, put a human interest angle: Choose a character ( an athlete, etc) that’s significant to this game & report on what you observed of him during important moments of the game, did he keep shaking his head &,frowning, or cursing, or laughing, etc. 8th par: Any analysis from experts or sports buffs? Maybe you can compare UP with DLSU ( it’s Jeron Teng’s valedictory or last year with 8 or so newbies — what about the UP Maroons, anything significant about their training or recruitment etc? 9th par: Any prognosis? Quotes? Etc.

Use short, simple sentences, vary your action with words, be specific in describing shots (is it a perimeter shot/  3pt play, a layup, a fade away, a free throw, etc.)

  1. UP upsets DLSU, 71-66, for rare 2-0 start

The Fighting Maroons continued to surprise as they shot down the Green Archers, 71-66, to earn their second straight victory for UAAP Season 78 on Wednesday, September 9, at the Smart Araneta Colisuem.

The last time UP had a 2-0 start was in 2005 when they also beat La Salle. The game also marked UP’s first victory against La Salle since 2009.

The first period was a close battle as UP led DLSU, 16-14. The second quarter marked DLSU’s only lead as Jollo Go made three free throws to make it 17-16 but the Diliman-based team went on a perimeter shooting spree leading to a 10-0 run. UP ended the first half with a commanding 41-28 lead.

Thomas Torres opened the second half with a trey that cut the lead to 10, but UP went on a 13-6 run with baskets from Diego Dario and back-to-back threes from Gelo Vito and Paul Desiderio to take a dominating 17-point lead, 54-37. They closed the third quarter with a 54-42 lead.

At the start of the fourth quarter, UP appeared to close out the game until La Salle rallied back with baskets from Josh Caracut and Prince Rivero. Rivero split his free throws to put the Archers within 5 points, 59-64. After Jett Manuel made a free throw, Jeron Teng drove to the basket with a tough layup to cut the deficit to 4, 61-65, with 45 seconds remaining. DLSU then engaged UP with a full court press and fouled Andrew Harris. Harris made two free throws to extend UP’s lead to 2, 67-61. Jeron Teng committed a crucial turnover after failing to catch an inbound pass. Agustini Amar got the ball and Teng was forced to commit his fifth foul. UP made six free throws in the last 42 seconds to seal their win.

The Maroons shot 41% from the field and 32% from the 3-point land. Jett Manuel led UP with 14 points, 5 boards, and 5 assists. Paul Desiderio and rookie Piero Longa contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Paulo Rivero had a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards for DLSU. Teng finished with 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting. Thomas Torres had 8 points on a poor 2-of-12 shooting.

The UP Maroons will face the undefeated UST Growling Tigers on Sunday, September 13, at the Mall of Asia Arena in a battle for the top spot.
