Ravena, Blue Eagles paralyzed Fighting Maroons leading scorer Manuel
“Was he scoreless?” shocked Bo Perasol, the head coach of Ateneo, to a reporter,
as if he didn’t expect his team to completely shut down the University of the Philippines’ co-captain and leading scorer, Jett Manuel.
After spearheading the Maroons in their triumph against the Green Archers and being the lead scorer in their recent battles with the Bulldogs and Tamaraws, Manuel surprisingly contributed nothing but a set of 3 rebounds in their game against the Blue Eagles on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
Kiefer Ravena was the primary one to blame for this occurrence. He admitted to reporters, “Jett is a very capable scorer and coming into the game I was really watching his highlights or his games this season how he’s going to attack, how he’s gonna make his baskets and I made a conscious effort together with the other guys that will be matched up against Jett to focus on Jett himself.” Teaming up with Von Pessumal, both eagles hounded Manuel in his whole 18.5-minute stay on the floor.
Perasol might have not known of Ravena’s plan-of-attack that he countered, “We planned on defending their attackers but we didn’t plan on eliminating the scoring of Jett Manuel.” Nonetheless, Ravena, Perasol and the whole blue team recognized the advantage they gained on shutting Manuel.
Without Manuel to lighten up the UP scoreboard, Paul Desiderio led UP with a contribution of 12 points. On the blue corner, Ravena and Pessumal led the win by giving 11 points each. The final tally of the entire game resulted to 56-43, in favor of Ateneo.
The frustration of Manuel is evident as UP captain JR Gallarza said to reporters, “He ran out of the change room kind of fast if you guys saw that. I don’t think he really wanted to talk to anybody though. He’s gonna be okay.”
With regard to their battle against the winless Falcons this coming Sunday, October 4, at the MOA Arena, Jett set his goal by saying, “Sunday’s game is a must-win for us no matter what happens.”
