Phivolcs has lifted the tsunami alert as follows:

Quote “A strong distant earthquake occurred NEAR COAST OF CHILE at 02:34 PM, 27 February 2010 (Philippine Time), located at 36.1 ºS, 72.6 ºW with depth of 55 km and a preliminary magnitude of 8.8. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center sea level monitoring stations confirmed the occurrence of a tsunami due to this earthquake. At 7:00 AM 28 February 2010, PHIVOLCS issued a bulletin with Tsunami Alert Level 2 in areas along the coast of the Philippines fronting the Pacific Ocean, stating that concerned public is advised to be on alert for unusual tsunami waves with heights of at most one (1) meter.

Quote “As of 3:00 PM 28 February 2010, PHIVOLCS has not received any reports of unusual significant sea level changes within the projected arrival period of tsunami waves in the Philippine coasts (1:00PM to 2:30PM). Other observations of the passage of tsunami in the nearby countries show that the waves are small and non-damaging. By 4:30 PM 28 February 2010, if no other significant sea level changes were observed, local authorities & the public can assume that the tsunami threat has passed. People may resume their normal activities.

breaking news: from Phivolcs: residents, east coast Philippines (coastal towns facing Pacific Ocean): evacuate now. Tsunami Alert Level 2

From Phivolcs (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) as reported by DZMM:

Tsunami Alert Level 2 is up along the East Coast of the Philippines, or the coastal areas fronting the Pacific Ocean, namely, coastal towns in:

1.Batanes Group of Islands

2.Cagayan

3.Ilocos Norte

4.Isabela

5.Quezon

6.Aurora

7.Camarines Norte

8.Camarines Sur

9.Albay

10.Catanduanes

11.Sorsogon

12.Northern Samar

13.Eastern Samar

14.Leyte

15.Southern Leyte

16.Surigao del Norte

17.Surigao del Sur

18.Davao Oriental

19.Davao del Sur

Residents are advised by Phivolcs to evacuate these areas as soon as possible for the 1pm to 2:30pm estimated time of arrival today of the tsunami (Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010) and to steer clear of these areas at least until 2:30pm today; coordinate with local goverments and barangays.
