DEPARTMENT CHAIR’S NOTES ON THE REVITALIZED GRADUATE PROGRAM:
M.A. IN JOURNALISM
4 April 2012
(Two days ago, the U.P. Diliman University Council, the highest academic policy-making body of the autonomous unit, approved the revised journalism graduate curriculum, now called the M.A. in Journalism program. Today, a day after the Department announced that it will be offering the M.A. in Journalism program this June, applicants have made inquiries with the administrative office of the College. The old brochure on the old media studies program was being distributed. Since this is the Holy Week and office hours will close in three hours, the staff is requested to distribute these notes instead of the old brochure. The new brochure for the M.A. in Journalism program will be designed at the resumption of work on April 10. Thank you. )
The main features of the M.A. in Journalism program include both specialization and breadth: Students will take up the same core media studies courses (12 units) and will specialize in journalism (15 units): Two core journalism courses (J 201 The Philippine Press and J 202 Advanced Reporting) and three journalism electives. The curriculum is therefore geared towards developing media educators, media executives and leaders, and professional journalists. The curriculum also builds an online journalism track: Advanced Reporting (Newsgathering and reporting for multimedia journalism, with emphasis on specialized beats and in-depth reporting), core course; Newsroom Management (Organization and management of multimedia newsrooms), elective; Online News Production (Producing web content from breaking and developing news and social media updates, and generating interactive materials from the web), elective. All these courses will be offered in state-of-the-art LAN-connected individualized LCD-assembled classrooms simulated as multimedia newsrooms and in the present multimedia lecture rooms, and will be handled by a team of highly qualified faculty members equipped with theoretical refinement and professional media experience.
