  1. Bill Murray remembers PH as a ‘beautiful varietal garden’

The article linked above is non-ethical because it presents no value whatsoever to its audience in terms of its impact on national issues or relevance to pertinent mass concerns. The interview contained random personal questions, was not about the Philippines in any context, and was undertaken on a social news and entertainment website, which only backs up the fact that the content of the interview isn’t really anything relatively news worthy, lest you be an avid Bill Murray fan who’s been waiting to ask him random, unrelated questions. The piece goes on to describe his various past works, and every single time he’s ever mentioned the Philippines ever, which in total amounts to twice. The write-up appeals to the suggested Filipino mentality in which any mention of the Philippines or Filipinos in any form of media abroad constitutes a reason for national celebration and a display of patriotism and national pride, yet is essentially a re-posting of a piece of the transcript of a random interview of a Hollywood actor who is currently promoting his latest film. The Philippine news media has no business reporting on singular occurrences of Hollywood actors remembering their vacations.

For a news to be considered as news worthy, it must be about a public figure and/or the news must be of public concern. The following news from the GMA website should have been tagged under entertainment because given the way it was written, it seems like a trivial news. The brawl did not include any public figures nor did it result to any injuries but GMA just had to post it due to its admittingly funny nature knowing that it would get hits. And given that the video has gone viral, the guy would besmirched upon and would have a tarnished reputation. If this were treated as a news, the article should have contained more facts rather than a shallow descriptive narrative and they should have interviewed the guy after he calmed down. In this way, the ‘news report’ can be fair and factual, instead of just poking fun at the guy’s bad lapse of judgement.

The recent filing of a plunder case by the kilusang magbubukid ng pilipinas (KMP) against president aquino and other government officials last wednesday has become a matter of public interest related with the pork barrel scam.

The article is fair, factual, and objective and the sources well-identified in the sense that the side of both the kilusan ng mga magbubukid was presented last wednesday and recently this afternoon, a response to the complaint through this article views the side of various house leaders. In journalism, it is ethical especially in matters which affect public concern to present both sides of conflicting parties in order to allow the public to have a broad range of opinions as possible regarding the matter.

  4. http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/147827/aquino-warned-beware-the-wooden-horse

This article in the Lifestyle section of Philippine Daily Inquirer grabbed my attention due to the eye-catching title which appears directly addressed to President Noynoy. Sensationalism pervades throughout the article which might be reasoned for by its inclusion in the said section. However, it is still framed as a news story revolving around a certain feng shui expert’s predictions for the president in the year 2014.

There is no word of caution regarding the reliability of feng shui predictions. This is important as it is possible that readers may form false beliefs induced by the “serious” manner in which the article was written. The author could have bothered to include one sentence serving as a disclaimer of sorts, warning against relying on unscientific predictions, about fate resting ultimately in our own hands.
