  2. In my opinion, the report by GMA News TV adhered to the SPJ Code of Ethics. First of all, the who, what, where, when, and how were stated as well as the why, which served as the context of the news report. The information needed to understand the events during the misencounter was complemented with details about why it happened (they went to a BIFF territory to arrest a Malaysian bomb-maker who was one of the most wanted by the US).

Various sources were also interviewed and clearly identified, among them the chief negotiator of MILF, Mayor Ampatuan, AFP Spokesman, NCR PO Chief Director, Vice chairman for political affairs, & DILG Secretary. Moreover, an accurate report and updated was given.

Although a mistake in the number of victims was made at the beginning, the reporter in the field was questioned and was able to answer quickly. The information was clarified and corrected by the end of the report.

  3. The report on GMA News TV regarding the clash between the PNP SAP and MILF and BIFF does not present what Luis Teodoro called “larger truths” in his article “(Re)defining News”. Teodoro emphasize that news should be accurate in terms of everything (names, place, date, etc.) The reporter, Maki Pulido reported that there are 43 casualties and after talking to Real Sorroche, she said that she is not certainly sure if the information she has is accurate and updated. She still even asked Real Sorroche about the real number of casualties.

The lack of coordination as reason stated in the report seems to be very broad if we analyze what really happened that resulted of killing 49 people and having 11 injured. There is not enough information given as to why the MILF and BIFF attacked PNP SAP. The lack of coordination between the PNP and MILF and BIFF is I think not enough to have this massive attack by the MILF and BIFF.

  4. The reporter was not able to grasp the larger truth in the situation. Despite being able to convey the important details like the number of casualties, location and other information about the news, it was noticeable that the specified reason for the attack, which was lack of coordination, was too vague to be believable. It did not explain why the MILF and BIFF had to join forces to take down the members of the Special Action Force especially while the Bangsamoro Basic Law was undergoing senate deliberations.
However, the reporter repeatedly mentioned the press people were waiting for the ongoing closed door meeting to end so that he can further update the report, admitting in a way that the information he conveyed was not sufficient.

  6. As Professor Luis Teodoro discussed in his article “Redefining News”, news must be accurate, not just with facts but also in presenting the “larger truth”. The report of GMA news about the encounter between the PNP SAP, MILF and BIFF wasn’t able to supply the right data at the moment it was flashed on the television screens of thousands of Filipino households nationwide. The reporter also said that the “lack of coordination” was the reason behind the clash happened, resulting to 49 casualties and 11 injured. In my opinion, they elaborated it enough for the audience to understand, assuming that they did not alter any detail.

Even though there was an error with the stated facts at the first part of the news report, I thinks it’s a good thing that Maki Pulido clarified the number of casualties and injured. It just proves that they are ready to admit their errors to justify their responsibility in telling the truth.

  7. I believe that despite the anchor’s honesty, GMA News failed to adhere to the SPJ Code of Ethics. Despite the otherwise detailed report on the incident, numbers should have been withheld or at least told in estimates, given that exact figures determine fact. Passive viewers may have picked up the first number and have left before getting the chance to hear the correction.

The idea of accuracy in news is very important as it is treated as a source of fact. The “larger truth” is compromised at the base level with wrong numbers. Further research could have been done beforehand or the news team could have opted to avoid numbers until a better source appeared.

  8. Basing my opinion on the SPJ Code of Ethics, the report regarding the ceasefire breach has violated several provisions of the code. First is the lack of enough context to support the news. Information was given on when, where, and who were the people involved in the incident, but the actual background or the reason why the breach even ensued was not explained, therefore placing this incident as if it is a mere random act of terrorism or violence.

Another noticeable violation of the code is the inconsistency in the number of casualties from the incident. Given that there have already been different figures circulating, the news reporter should have given a definite or at least a sure estimate of the number of casualties. Instead, the news reporter himself is unsure of the figures. He is responsible to make sure the accuracy of his report; any for of inaccuracy in his report in indeed inexcusable.

  9. I think that the news report regarding the PNP SAP, MILF and BIFF clash is inaccurate and did not adhere to the “larger truths” discussed by Luis Teodoro in his article “Redefining the News” since it lacks data. The reporters did not even know the real number of casualties and is only basing their reports on claims that were not confirmed by the authority. Also they did not even cover more of what really happened. They did not explain more regarding the bomb maker that was supposed to be the real target of the police and regarding the lack of coordination between the involved parties that resulted to the claimed number of casualties. Their news report seemed very vague.

I think that the “larger truths” together with the other standards of news reporting should always be followed so that reports will be accurate and thus the people watching the news at home will be correctly informed of the event that just happened and just be fed by some vague news report that did not explain much. It’s a consolation then that at least they were still waiting for the closed door meeting to be finished to be able to know more facts regarding what happened.

  10. Professor Luis V. Teodoro discussed an in depth take on news reporting in his article “Redefining the News”. Aside from stating the basic components of a news story (who, what, where, when, how, why), Teodoro mentioned a principle called the “larger truths” which has been commonly overlooked by journalists nowadays. Yes it is very significaant for a reporter to give straight facts to its readers or viewers but the larger truth is as equally significant.

This news report by GMA News TV failed to properly cover the larger truth of the story. Not to mention the conflicting data news reporter Real Sorroche presented on the total number of casualties in the PNP SAP and MILF, BIFF encounter although it was made clear at the end of the report. They were able to exercise accuracy in terms of names, places, and other details but lost focus on the root of the clash in the first place. They weren’t able to shed light on the “lack of coordination” between the PNP and MILF which supposedly was the meat of the entire news report.

  11. The news report and journalists involved complied with the SPJ Code of Ethics. Initially, there had been inaccuracies in data, but it should be commended that these journalists took responsibility to correct the figures with quick speed and clarity. These inaccuracies had only existed because it was only while the report was conducted that a closed conference among officials to clarify the details of the killing had taken place. The way the journalists maximized the dissemination of information to the public and their approach to handling the lack of context up until that point about the killing was to provide accounts to all sides to the story. Not a single frame or angle had been emphasized, giving respect and the exchange of information to all subjects. In response to the lack of information, the news report still provided the audience with the general overview regarding what had happened.

Overall, I was given the impression that the journalists acted in favor to serve the public. They were responsible, mindful of the data they gave out; they blurred out the violence in footage; and they made sure to comply with the nature of fairness, giving a balanced story covering all angles.

  12. In my opinion, GMA “sacrificed accuracy for speed/format” (SPJ, Code of Ethics 2014), in this case, their live coverage. I think that having an exact count isn’t that necessary (unless asked; they could have went with “at least X people have been killed), and it took them quite some time just discussing the casualty count.
Another incompliance is the notable lack of information regarding the press conference after the closed meeting between officials. Perhaps, in that press conference, they could have clarified the issue of “lack of coordination” between the police, and the MILF and BIFF.

  13. In my honest opinion, the news report on GMA News TV regarding the clash between the BIFF, other entities, and the military, only partially adhered to the SPJ code of ethics. It is without question that the news report did discuss the basic details which proved as a clear context and background for the news event; however, as stated in the SPJ code of ethics, neither speed nor format is a justifiable excuse for inaccuracy.

Yes, they did gather and update the necessary information but it was rather unprofessional and unethical to release information to the public without confirmation from multiple sources or absolute certainty.

  14. In relation to Teodoro’s account of “Redefining News”, the report was not able to adhere to his notion of larger truths. I believe that the inconsistency of the figures in the report cannot be solely blamed on the newscasters because as they have mentioned, the retrieval operations have yet to be finished and there are still some bodies to be dealt with. The stats are still most likely to change. Also, they were evidently trying to get a clear hold on the inconsistencies by pointing out the issue on air. But the fact that the report failed to adequately represent the catalysts that lead to the issue at hand and what it could mean for future relations between the parties involved can not be as easily excused.

The report was an exhaustive account of the violence that ensued and it largely ignored the more pressing matters of the advocacies behind the action of both camps like the PNP’s supposed stance on dealing with the fugitives before the whole fiasco and the MILF’s and BIFF’s roles in the political sphere that resulted in their part on the altercation.

Based from the SPJ Code of Ethics, the report made by GMA News violated one of the four principles outlined as the foundation of ethical journalism, namely seeking truth and reporting it. It was clear throughout the entirety of the news report that they didn’t have a verified number of recovered bodies. Despite this flaw, Maki Pulido claimed at the beginning of the report that so far, 43 bodies of policemen have been recovered. This is already misleading in itself, especially since after Real Sorroche reported a different number, Maki Pulido proceeded to ask him about inconsistencies in the reports. Although Real Sorroche and Maki Pulido disclosed their sources, viewers of the news program would still be left in confusion because Maki Pulido did not make a disclaimer that the number she was reporting was still up for verification and therefore did not warrant a headline. It was apparent that there was lack of coordination between the two news reporters. Accuracy is a key element in news reporting especially since passive viewers of television normally would not stick to watching only one channel, even less so to finish an entire news report.

The news report failed to follow the standards said in the article. The news reporters got the numbers wrong and focused mainly on the casualties of the event. They were more concerned of the collateral damages done instead of the issue itself. The report also failed to clarify what actually happened in the encounter between the PNP-SAF and the MILF and BIFF, which in my opinion, should have been the focus of the report.

The report started out well. It was able to identify the vital information needed such as the who, what, when, and where of the evvent. However, towards the end, Maki Pulido had to clarify whether they had the correct number of casualties or not. Real Sorroche had to spend a good three minutes explaining.

In my opinion, the GMA news coverage on the Maguindanao clash adhered to the SPJ Code of Ethics. The report was able to obtain the sides of both the government and MILF regarding the ‘misencounter’, although the opinions were clearly different such that the police claimed to have coordinated with the MILF with regard to the Philippine National Police Special Actions Force’s (PNP-SAF) operations, while MILF said otherwise.

The report also aimed for some accuracy despite different sources. Regarding the number of casualties, there was at first confusion with the real figures, but as the news coverage went on, reports from a police officer confirmed the number (49 casualties instead of 43). The report was also able to state that a closed-door meeting of officials was ongoing and it would be through there that the reporters will be able to get more updates. It would be also better to get the side of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters regarding the issue, since the misencounter resulted into a bloodbath instead of the properly executed operations of the PNP-SAF.

  20. Two things to point out. First, it is obvious that the field reporter, Real Sorroche, was not able to follow with the guidelines in the SPJ Code of Ethics 2014 that “neither speed nor format excuses inaccuracy.” This is in line with his inaccurate report on the number of death and casualty that might lead to confusion and misunderstanding.

Point 2. But on the last part of the report, where anchor, Maki Pulido, clarified which of the incoming inconsistent numbers is the real count, Sorroche was given the chance to acknowledge and correct the mistake. Thus, having the report comply to the SPJ Code of Ethics.

Also the reporters and the program seem to capture both the opinions and points of view of the two sides involved but somehow the whole picture, the larger picture of the story, the real reason behind the attack, the ‘misencounter’ issue and the reason why BIFF and MILF joint-forces even though a peace process and a cease fire is on rule, was not included, for the benefit of those who are not yet fully aware of the whole news story.

  22. I believe that the news report was able to comply with the SPJ Code of Ethics, although not perfectly. This is because of the misleading casualty statistics presented at the start of the report which causes confusion especially to the viewers. This is contrary to the provision stating that accuracy and verification must come first before the report’s release.

The newscaster, however, cleared the details at the end of his report. This compensates for the mistake because he was able to “correct information throughout the life of a news story.” Also, different sides of the story were explored and delivered.

  23. I don’t think the news report was able to comply entirely with SPJ Code of Ethics. Sure, the report was able to provide the basic information regarding the event, taken from both sides. But unfortunately, the compliance ends there with the news report having some inaccuracies (though admittedly) and was unable to provide the larger truth and context of the event.

Firstly, the reporter was unable to provide an accurate number of the casualties from the start. He was only able to provide the explanation of having conflicting sources regarding the number of casualties towards the end of the report when asked. Secondly, the “misencounter” is part of a larger ongoing conflict in in which the reporter was unable to provide. Ultimately, the report sufficiently complies with the core goal of journalism but leaves much to be desired.

  24. I myself was in confusion while watching the news report. The reporters clearly do not have the exact and sure number of casualties, but Maki Pulido gave a lead-in establishing that there were 43 casualties without saying that the figure is still on verification. At the end of the report, Pulido herself was clearly unsure of the figures given to them and asked Real Sorroche about it. Sorroche, however, gave a different number. This makes the report misleading and confusing. This violates the SPJ Code of Ethics, where it says that journalists should “take responsibility for the accuracy of their work” and “verify information before releasing it” (Society of Professional Journalists, 2014). They should have not given an exact figure since it would imply that they were establishing facts. They should have estimated the figure. Some people, once they heard exact figures, may not anymore watch or listen to the entire report because they already had the information they need. And this is not a healthy case since they were giving different figures and unsure of their reports.

It is commendable that they were able to identify sources clearly. Sorroche was able to answer the questions thrown at him by the anchor, though he was not able to deliver precise answers. It was still kind of confusing. The banter between him and Pulido was unnecessarily long. They also failed to present the context of the news. Yes, they did give (partially inaccurate) answers to what, when and where, but they failed to explain why the encounter happened. This leaves the viewers still unknowledgeable of the real situation.

The news report violated a number of provisions in the SPJ Code of Ethics, most prominent of all is seeking truth and reporting it. Pulido mentioned a “definite” casualty count at the beginning, only to be contradicted by the casualty count mentioned by the field reporter later on. Not mentioning the first time that there is no verified count is a violation; the confusion that ensued when new counts were mentioned is another. Also, mentioning the count and knowing that it hasn’t been verified yet is another violation. Although their effort to clear up the confusion is commendable, it wasn’t enough.

Instead of shedding light to the issue, the inaccuracy of this GMA News TV report only brought confusion. There is actually no problem if the number of casualties on all sides aren’t finalized yet. If anything, the news report is supposed to be a ‘work-in-progress’. However, Pulido started the report matter-of-factly, saying how many exactly died. They could have said that this is an estimation instead, or at least verified it with a numerous sources before releasing. It is funny how the reporter says, “Sa ngayon wala pang kumpirmasyon…”, while viewers can see “49, Kumpirmadong patay…” by the banner below the screen.

Moreover, the field reporter claims that there is a possibility that more policemen than the said number were actually killed. This assumption was made worse when GMA flashed what he said on the banner, only now pinpointing PNP as the one who said it and not Sorroche.

  29. I believe there were lapses committed in the report as far as the SPJ Code of Ethics is concerned.
According to this guide, journalists should “verify information before releasing it.” Facts and figures, no matter how simple or minimal they seem to be, are crucial information that public has to know. In addition, the code adds that journalists should “boldly tell the story of the diversity and magnitude of the human experience.” The report relayed information about a crime and storytelling had to be as direct as possible. Also, proper context seemed to have been slightly overlooked. I was hoping that a comprehensive review of the conflict among MILF, BIFF, and PNP, and the issue regarding Bangsamoro Basic Law was provided.
However, despite all the lapses, identification of diverse sources was commendable.

But the same goes for how important it is to make up for the erroneous pieces of information for public consumption. With that in mind, I think that GMA News TV somehow struggled to maintain data integrity, but managed to clear the confusion regarding the number of casualties towards the end of the coverage.

Although there were times when it seems like they lack information of the encounter between PNP SAP, MILF and BIFF, it could also be seen how the reporters tried to interview from various sources.
Though it’s questionable if they had the right focus and they lacked to expound on the larger truths.

Although their reports did include the basic information, they failed to report thoroughly on the more important issues such as the real reason behind the confrontation. Furthermore, in my perspective, they failed to collect complete and balanced information from both sides.

The GMA News TV also failed in giving accurate information regarding the number of people killed in the incident. It is their responsibility to verify all collected information before even going on air as inaccurate reports may lead to confusion.

The news report violated the SPJ Code of Ethics 2014 in three ways. Firstly, journalists should remember that neither speed nor format excuses accuracy. Pulido said at the initial news report that 43 people were killed while Sorroche reported a different number. Though they confirmed at the end the right number of people, they still left the audience confused. Secondly, they did not provide enough context of the dispute between the MILF (with BIFF) and PNP. Lastly, I think that the news report focused on the details of the event but not exactly why and how, the latter hindering public enlightenment at its fullest.

The SPJ said that speed and format shouldn’t affect or hinder accuracy. The reporter was live and maybe to be able to provide the news at the place accuracy suffered. He was not sure of what the exact number was which is crucial in a news reporting because the number could cause panic and worry to the viewer which is another bad effect.

The main inconsistency that they have is on the number of casualties. What is the use of any news report if we would only be misinformed. Instead of being helpful, it might have negative effects.

  37. Assessing GMA’s news report under the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics 2014, gives us good and bad points about how the report followed the four principles of ethical journalistic practice.

First, the report was responsible enough in establishing the context of the encounter, carefully indicating the nuances that exist between the MILF and the BIFF, as well as the PNP SAF and the AFP. The report had also identified every source where every corresponding detail came from, capturing the views of different institutions that are linked to the encounter.

However, there were some lapses with the report as well, like the inconsistencies with the information received by the anchor, and the field reporter being rattled when asked of information that he already knew in the first place, which may confuse the viewers who may have limited time in absorbing the news content.

  38. In my own opinion, the journalists committed a violation on the SPJ code of ethics.
First, was the confusion over the official number of casualties. The news agency initially reported 43 people dead while the police stated they excavated over 50 bodies. But as of the live report, Real Sorroche of Mindanao reported 49 policemen dead. That was an obvious case of reporting false information over air.
Second point, there was an unfair airing between the MILF-BILF vs PNP. The MILF-BILF’s intention of firing over the PNP was not stated or interviewed.
