Good practice – SPJ Code of Ethics:
    – “Diligently seek subjects of news coverage to allow them to respond to criticism or allegations of wrongdoing.”

In this article by Philippine News explains how after Mocha Uson received her award “Gawad Thomasian Alumni in Government Service” from the UST Alumni Association a number of students and fellow alumni criticized her for being unworthy of the award. Despite this the article focuses on how Mocha responds to the so called bashers quoting her FB post in the article. Doing this gives all sides a voice, not just the ranters and the bashers but also Mocha Uson herself.

    MOVIE REVIEW

    Film: BOLT
    MTRCB Rating: G

BOLT is a Disney animated movie centered around a dog named Bolt. With his “person” named Penny, Bolt grew up believing that he has superpowers. Super strength, heat vision and a Super Bark to name a few, but unbenounced to him it’s all an elaborate plan for a TV show. One day bolt gets lost and finds out the truth about the fake world he grew up believing. The movie was inspiring and focused towards children, not really for teenagers and adults. The main lesson you could say was to stay true and believe in yourself and never let anyone tell you who you are.

Meet the Best Buds of the Galaxy – Han Solo Movie

This commercial is meant for people to relate and introduce the star wars turned into Filipino versions of the characters, Han (Han Solo) and Chewy (Chewbacca). It’s a 2 minute and 30 second long ad aimed to get people to watch the new Han Solo movie. For me it give little to no background as to who Han and chewy is from the movie therefore I was never really invested in the “characters”. To add the that if I was unknowing of the Star Wars references the relationship of the movie to the commercial’s story would be non-existent. For me this advertisement is somewhat of a failure, it fails to draw me in, it fails to give me information on the movie and it fails me as a fan of the Star Wars Saga.

I see a slight problem with the process of how this fact checking system will work. Although a big problem of the internet is the absence of a gatekeeper, I think the gatekeeper theory shouldn’t be copied and pasted onto this system. There will be a lot of moral gray areas when fact checkers are screening circulating news.
There will always be problems with “falsehood” when fact checkers are involved. Sometimes news stories can be slightly inaccurate but still presenting truthful news. For example a news article may provide an inaccurate estimate of attendees in a major rally.

    (Bonus Post: Advertising)

Though burger king is a great fast food resto, I always feel that the pictures on the menus advertise the wrong things. Just like in this commercial, there’s a stark difference in the quality of the meals presented on ads as compared to the actual food that you get when you order something.

Bonus: Your own movie review of any film you have seen in the last 30 days
I recently watched 2015’s Best Picture Oscar winner, Spotlight. Its story structure was so unorthodox so it took me by surprise when I watched it. First of all, the film was dominated by so much dialogue which would usually make the story dragging. Second, the film didn’t necessarily follow the usual 3-act structure. I didn’t feel a climax that rose above the rest. Aside from the amazing cast, what as most remarkable for me was how the film was able to turn a story about an underappreciated job title and completely turn it into a thrilling film about the pursuit of truth no matter what the odds.

Bad Practice – KBP Code of Ethics

“Article 13. SUPERSTITION AND THE OCCULT

Sec. 1. Programs featuring superstitious and pseudo-scientific beliefs and practices, such as supernatural powers, foretelling of the future, astrology, phrenology, palm-reading, numerology, mind-reading, hypnotism, faith healing or similar subjects shall be careful not to induce belief in them. Care shall be taken to prevent the exploitation of people who may be easily swayed by such superstitious and pseudo-scientific beliefs and practices.”

In this report in umagang kay ganda they show cased lucky charms and how to use them. Altho they somewhat advertised viewers to buy from this store which is a violation of the KBP Code of Ethics.

This article promotes the belief in pseudo-sciences like astrology. It encourages rationalizing events in one’s life without hard evidence and instead, undying superstitions. vv

    Red Horse Beer

bad practice – “Article VII, Section 6, C. Advertisements for alcoholic beverages should not depict the act of drinking such as the liquid entering the mouth and/or being swallowed.”
The beginning of the TVC already goes against this provision. The liquid may not be seen but the talent does a great job of making it clear that he swallowed a gulp of Red Horse beer.

An example of this would be biodata stated in a murder story. The age, number of family members, etc. may be slightly off but the fact that an actual murder happened, and the manner of its occurrence may still hold true.

  27. Bonus: Your own movie review of any film you have seen in the last 30 days
    The Incredibles 2
    MTRCB Rating: PG
Although Incredibles 2 is a Pixar movie and Pixar has been well known for making family movies, there are some things that require it to be PG instead of G. First of all, there is a lot of violence. It may not be gory or bloody but there are a lot of combat scenes. Second, because it is a superhero movie, of course crime is a subject and is constantly depicted in the movie. Third, there is this one part that hinted at adult language when Frozone was cut off mid-way through a cuss word.

    Movie Review: Deadpool 2
Deadpool as a character largely contrasts the traditional superhero who is morally just, professional, and friendly by being a mercenary who does hero work for money or personal reasons and talks to villains, fellow heroes and bystanders with insulting language and tone. The film reflects this contrast as we see Deadpool kill with bullet wounds and katana slashes being shown with some gory depiction as opposed to regular superhero movies as the avengers barely showing death and injury.
The sequel has a lighter tone as opposed to its predecessor as it shows a more human side of Deadpool who seeks to find new meaning in his life by taking a young mutant filled with anger and trauma into a better life. The color and lighting is noticeably lighter as well compared to the original film to reflect this change of tone.
Deadpool 2 uses this contrast to superheroes for comedic effect by leading the audience to believe that Deadpool will do the “right” thing or what another hero would do and subverting it by doing the opposite. They also parody other tropes of movies such as a dramatic montage set to dramatic music similar to James Bond and making fun of death scenes in films by doing a drawn out and lengthy death scene with multiple fake- out deaths.
The film was given an R- 16 rating by the MTRCB which is the correct rating in my opinion. The film is violent and uses swear words a lot for comedic effect and thus does not meet the PG- 13 rating’s provision of “Language – The film may contain moderate swear words and menacing language consistent with the context of the scene in which they are employed. The use of infrequent and non-vulgar strong swear words or sexually-derived or suggestive expletives and expressions as well as the use of swear words and expletives shall be allowed. The use of sexually-oriented or suggestive language and other references to sex shall always be suitable for viewers who are at least 13 years of age.” and “Violence – Infrequent, non-gratuitous, non-graphic and justifiable violence may be allowed.” It doesn’t deservean R-18 rating because the violence shown was not realistic and was used for comedic effect. There were no sex scenes unlike the first film and the other categories such as Nudity, Sex, and Drugs were not largely shown in the film, if any. The film’s theme of finding new love, and purpose is light especially compared to the theme of revenge in the first film.

This is a bad example as it might induce belief in the viewers of the supernatural phenomenon especially as it is broadcasted in ANC, a news network rather than a talk show or variety show where it could be seen as entertainment.

I attended Marikina Youth Convention, a gathering for Marikina high school students to expand their views towards education and life and to provide other avenues for them to excel. The event was able to acquire and use responsibly specialized knowledge and experience by inviting different people from different sectors and fields of expertise such as music, psychology, law, geology, environmental science, SPED, digital design, business, and LGBT issues. The students skills and work attitude were developed through workshops held by the experts. There were also activities that encouraged these students from different schools to engage in a discussion regarding social issues and what they can do to make a change.

    Dengvaxia
Bad Practice- SPJ Code of Ethics 2014
    “Minimize Harm
Ethical journalism treats sources, sunjects, colleagues and members of the public as human beings deserving of respect”
This news report regarding the measures that the DOH undertook to mitigate the effect of Dengvaxia contained close-up images of some parents who are crying over the effects of Dengvaxia on their children. These citizens should be portrayed with dignity and should not be displayed gratuitously for emotional effect. “Ethical journalists treats sources, subjects, collegaues and members of the public as human beings deserving of respect”

Bad example- the KBP Broadcast Code: ” “Art. 13 SUPERSTITION AND THE OCCULT: “Sec.1 Programs featuring superstitious and pseudo-scientific beliefs and practices, such as supernatural powers, foretelling of the future, astrology, phrenology, palm-reading, numerology, mind-reading, hypnotism, faith healing or similar subjects shall be careful not to induce belief in them. Care shall be taken to prevent the exploitation of people who may be easily swayed by such superstitious and pseudo-scientific beliefs and practices. Sec.2.Programs or program materials that promote or encourage occult practices, black magic, witchcraft, and similar activities are prohibited.”
For this interview, Francis Gaw, a Feng Shui Master, was interviewed regarding the implications of the signs towards business during the Year of the Dog 2018. Throughout the video, there were no warnings that feng shui and the zodiac signs were only guides or that reality is reliant on the viewers’ own will. This is a bad example as it might induce belief in the viewers of the supernatural phenomenon especially as it is broadcasted in ANC, a news network rather than a talk show or variety show where it could be seen as entertainment.

“Stages of Disaster Reporting: Responsibilities and Challenges
In the aftermath of the disaster:
    – stage of disaster coping when the disaster reporters should be reaching out to the victims with vital information about humanitarian response
    – reporters should be informing citizens and policymakers about the nature and scale of the disaster and the progress of the relief effort”

The article is a good example of disaster reporting in the aftermath of a disaster. The article highlighted the successful evacuation of the government but still heeding warning for minor eruptions. The article provided context for PHIVOLCS’ warning system. (Level 4 (hazardous eruption imminent) to 3 (decreased tendency toward hazardous eruption)). The article showed hope and encouragement for after the disaster by showing the resilience of a returning villager who wants to get back to work. By the end of the article, social responsibility was taken into action by asking for donations towards relief operations.

This movie is rightfully rated G as it has an appropriate theme, no profane or offensive language, no nudity, sex, violence, horror or drugs mentioned or depicted in the movie.

ARTICLE III STANDARDS FOR THE PROTECTION OF CHILDREN Section 1. PRESENTATION
    k. Advertisements should encourage active and,
if possible, outdoor play versus sedentary
    lifestyle amongst children.

To add that if I was unknowing of the Star Wars references the relationship of the movie to the commercial’s story would be non-existent. For me this advertisement is somewhat of a failure, it fails to draw me in, it fails to give me information on the movie and it fails me as a fan of the Star Wars Saga. In the climax of the story we see children challenging the lead to a race with bicycles; this is a good example of encouraging kids to outdoor play versus sedentary lifestyle.
