i uploaded a small snippet only (small na snippet pa) of a clip, or only about 60 seconds, and for purposes of review only in this space.
The topic of last Thursday’s “Media in Focus” show of ABS-CBN news cable was the media coverage of the Ted Failon story. The guests were: psychiatrist Dr. June Pagaduan-Lopez, journalist Ding Gagelonia, New York Times Caloy Conde, Vice President for News Maria Ressa, and ……. someone whose hair was dripping wet.
The host, Cheche Lazaro, as always , was well-prepared, and she was reading materials on the topic before the show and she did some pre-prod mini-interviews of the guests casually, to make them comfortable and anticipate the discussion (pre-production mini-interviews). Maria Ressa was both unassuming and authoritative on media issues, both theory and practice, the crew was at ease around her, and she walked without any alalays or assistants in tow ( i like people who can walk around their building without any retinue.), and she jotted down notes in between discussion on an ordinary reporter’s notebook instead of those fancy electronic I-pod gadgets that take at least four to seven clicks to turn.
The show was segmentized, probably to have layers to it, different levels of discussion.
The producers said the show got favorable feedback afterwards.
The gist of what i said: said something like: It was not so much the right to privacy that was involved (because a public figure would not be able to invoke right to privacy in a criminal investigation that involved him); and so what was involved was what author Pefecto Fernandez framed as the right of a free press versus the right to a fair trial; in his discourse, the possible abuses outlined were as follows: sensationalism, vigilantism, excessive publicity, and prejudicial publicity (he then discussed the cases to illustrate).
I also said that the media overanalyzed Ted Failon himself rather than giving enough information on the physical evidence, etc.
(i think there’s one more replay over the weekend, so just google the schedule if you want to catch the entire show.)
