    Link: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/559097/enrile-evidence-shows-i-never-backed-ngos-tagged-in-pork-scam

The link above contains an article published yesterday ( January 6, 2014) by Philippine Daily Inquirer ( PDI) online written by TJ Burgonio . The said article is about Senator Juan Ponce Enrile proving his innocence regarding the pork barrel scam through a privilege speech. The author mentioned the evidences used by Enrile and sited him as the one who stated it or the primary source.

Although the article focuses on how Enrile is trying to prove his innocence to the public, the author showed a fair, factual and objective article. First, it can be observed that the author repeatedly wrote “he said” . The author neither affirm nor negate the statement of Enrile. For example, the author wrote “All whistleblowers admitted they never saw him receive any amount from Janet Lim-Napoles, , he said.” This is a way of the author stating “that according to Enrile he has nothing to do with the pork barrel scam and that statement is not from me.” Also, it is not hidden to the public that one of the greatest political enemy of Enrile is Senator Mirriam Defensor-Santiago. But it can be observed that PDI also released an article regarding the privilege speech of Defensor last December 22, 2013 written by the same author. Second, it can be noticed that the author make use of the word “alleged” pork barrel queen. Burgonio is not accusing Janet Lim Napoles of anything. The article is written in straight to the point manner without “added” adjectives. The author has written that “Enrile is facing a plunder complaint (followed by big names in the field of politics). Notice that the author did not use adjectives like “tremendous”, “colossal” or “massive”. Third, the article was able to meet its objective –which is to simply convey to the public what is Enrile’s privilege speech all about. The very last line of Enrile (in a form of message to his critics) “this gives them the freedom to create their own “facts.” Until the very last part , which could have a great impact to the readers understanding especially if the author didn’t indicate that that statement is also from Enrile.

  2. More social apps, less texting – Philippine data usage on Christmas surges 173%
    http://ph.news.yahoo.com/more-social-apps-less-texting-123529797.html

This piece on the new trend of electronic communication in the Philippines presents fair treatment of the issue, and is written clearly and without overly flowery stylistics, as to not confuse the audience. The article makes no unfounded claims about the issue, is highly descriptive of the reasons behind the trend using statistical evidence as observed by independent third parties, and gives an accurate illustration of the situation versus previous years without giving any unsolicited opinions or making any unnecessary predictions.

While the piece focuses mainly on observations and statements made from Globe Telecommunications regarding their recognition of the Filipino’s move to digital versus analog means of electronic communication, the article does not fail to also mention Smart Communication’s efforts towards ensuring that they capture their own piece of the market share. The article also doesn’t claim to know the rationale behind the shift in the trend, and instead relies on information supplied by Globe’s chief technical adviser Robert Tan, who is quoted and identified in the article.

The very moment I saw the headline of this article (Moro rebel killed in clash with government soldiers in North Cotabato)
I knew something was wrong. Much emphasis was placed on the rebel’s identity as “Moro.” This lies contrary to the following passage in the PPI code of ethics: “I shall not, in any manner, ridicule, cast aspersions on, or degrade any person by reason of sex, creed, religious belief, political conviction, cultural and ethnic origin.” The overall tone of the article also appears accusatory towards the militant group to which the said “Moro rebel” belongs, pointing out a number of their faults. Thankfully the author was able to reconcile this by airing both sides of the conflict (the government’s and the BIFF’s) in the final two paragraphs.

  4. In the article, “Duterte to Rice Smugglers: I will kill you” it seemed as though the article was written entirely and based on the Davao Mayor, Mr. Duterte’s statement on the issue. Though quoting Mr. Duterte on this matter was a good point for the article, there were no background information given for the audience. And first reading the article, they are already bombarded with the negative comments of the mayor.

The alleged person, Mr. David Tan, was referred to in the article in a unsure manner, referring to him as a “certain David Tan.” The writer should have had this atleast confirmed or backed up by another source person.

The article was focused on the idea of the rice smugglers and what the mayor could do to punish them. There were not much information on other speculations that might have been which may give balance to this news.

  5. Article: Singson on ‘Yolanda’ shelters: We Haven’t Paid Anyone Yet

This article written by Maila Ager, a seasoned journalist for Philippine Daily Inquirer, focuses on the alleged irregularities in the pricing of the Yolanda shelters and substandard quality of the bunkhouses which were made by the contractors. The detailed quotations throughout the article were mainly through the perspective of Singson, which is understandable because the article focuses on his position and opinion regarding the problematic shelters – but the article could’ve been more balanced if it had included the Lacson’s POV on the matter, since he’d been appointed as the rehabilitation czar and because Singson claimed in an interview that Lacson was heading the investigation on the discrepancies. A statement from Lacson would’ve given the article a more complex air – featuring all sides to the conflict and making it more complete.
