“The link above will redirect you to an episode of DZUP’s program, “Psych O’clock Habit”. The program airs every Thursday, from 6-7pm. It is hosted by UP Department of Psychology professors; Prof. Chei Billedo, and Prof. Ton Clemente. I failed to find an article from their different sites (blog site, Facebook site etc.) about the nature of the program, but provided under this paragraph is the program’s blog site. Their sites are not updated (except for Facebook statuses) so it’s hard to get a copy of their recent episodes.

“These are the details of the 106th episode aired last December 13, 2012:

– Episode Title: Ang Mahuhusay Humagod ng Nota

– A special Christmas episode featuring organizations from the department of Psychology.

“Under this paragraph is a site that contains a list of their episodes.

“The program will open with a music that is related to the topic of the day. Then the hosts will discuss about the title of the episode that is constructed with a sexually related / double meaning terminologies. For example, the 106th episode’s title used the term “nota” which in its sub-meaning, refers to the male genital. The approach of the show is to trigger sexual thoughts to the listeners, maybe to catch attention and to make a more interesting introduction. After this naughty discussion, they will introduce the guest / guests and proceed to the real talk. But you will notice the insertions of double meaning terms. But the program is not about discussion of pure sexual activities and related stuff, it actually has educational, and useful contents that they just always try to relate with sexual terms. Most of the time, they use of similar sounds, or literal meanings, like the episode about “blow-jab” that discussed sports and exercise.

“i just have some obvious points of violations on KBP Code of Ethics for Radio. First is the time slot. According to the provision, programs which may not be suitable for children shall air after 9pm, it might be okay, because their “real talk” tackles practical, and useful topics, but the approach of the program is sensual enough, and not good for the children. Secondly, under General Program Standards, the use of dialogues with obscene, blasphemous, and vulgar manifestations are not allowed. And in KBP Code of Ethics for Broadcast, the use of terms that implies sexually related things, even though not understood by majority of the audience shall be avoided. I really like the program, because it’s educational, and they invite experts on a certain field to talk about the subject of the episode, I think what’s wrong here is the time slot. Maybe they can air after 9pm or 10pm, so their cool approach will be justified.”

“News articles must be fair, factual and objective. This article, written in the lifestyle section does not seem to show any objectivity, only a story written to inform the public of the whereabouts of Megan Young who was crowned Miss World in 2013. Although she may be a public figure, the news does not concern public interest by just merely telling us she went on a vacation to Disneyland. The article was ended by informing the public that Young helped out in the relief operations of Typhoon Haiyan a few days after her trip. It was as if to assure the public that she has not forgotten her duties and responsibilites.

The Link above shows a report from Sandra Aguinaldo aired yesterday (January 13, 2014) on GMA News TV’s QRT ( Quick Response Team) anchored by Jiggy Manicad around 5:45 in the evening. It is about the expansion of sanitary landfill in Payatas ,Quezon City. The reporter did not fail to show all the angles of the report.

I believe that this report is fair, factual and objective. First, fair because the story tells two opposing side with equal and balance presentation – the side of the residences of Payatas, Quezon City and the authority in-charge of Payatas Opearations headed by the retired Col. Ramil Haimalin. Aguinaldo mentioned that according to the residences of Payatas , they were relocated in that area since 1990 and were given a certificate as qualified beneficiaries of community mortgage by the former Quezon City Mayor Brigido Simon Jr. The residences mean that they were in that area even before it was piled up by garbage. On the other had, according to Aguinaldo, Haimalin stated that there would be an demolition for the upcoming February or March this year and the main reason is to avoid health risks and to relocate them into a safer place. Second, Factual because the details from this report as stated by Aguinaldo came from direct interviews from both sides. It can also be noticed that the video, showing the “environment compliance certificate”, residences showing faces that they are not in favor of what the authority is planning to do and a house stuck alone in the middle of a pile of garbage showing their determination to protect that land they said that were given to them. All of these strengthen the report of Aguinaldo. Third, Objective because the reporter succeeded in showing more than just a story of what is happening in Payatas but into our environment as well.

xxx….. Furthermore, the margin of error was not mentioned, an important factor in this case, since it makes the decrease in the president’s ratings “statistically insignificant”. This was stated in a better written article:

    http://www.rappler.com/nation/47876-aquino-ratings-suffer-luzon

Still, the second writer used the terms “loser” and “winner” to refer to the government officials involved. This is problematic since it may color the people’s minds instead of instilling to them that this is a scientific survey that may or may not reflect what is really happening in reality. Another article concerning the same news expanded on the connection between the Yolanda aftermath and the survey, and gave voice to the people who suffered in reality. This is writing factual news because the story was not just based on the survey. Article may be found here:

JC De Vera Is Ready To Go Nude And Do Gay Love Scenes

    pinoystop.com/news/celebrity//jc-de-vera-is-ready-to-go-nude-and-do-gay-love-scenes

The article doesn’t really inform the public of anything relevant in the national or international news sphere, and really sounds more like a promotional piece to promote the actor’s new television show. The promotion of nudity, “sexy roles”, and controversial content is being used by the actor and his management to further his career, and he is being marketed by his network in “sexy and sensual” roles in his new soap. The actor denies that he would take on a provocative role for the mere reason of marketing, he admits that if the content requires him to take on controversial or sensual roles then “hindi ako magdadalawang isip. Pero pag ang indie film may pagka porn na ang dating, di siguro,” especially since his network “now appreciates his muscular and well-toned body”. The denial of his new marketing strategy comes after his second nude photoshoot in two months. This story has no relevance in the public news arena, and really sounds more like advertorial gossip being spread to promote a network’s new controversial soap opera. The private and professional lives of screen actors need not be treated as news, especially if their actions and inactions have no impact on national issues or public interests.

Reliable Numbers and Most of the Picture by Mixtura927

    January 14, 2014Uncategorized

    abs-cbnnews.com/01/13/14/pulse-no-major-drop-pnoys-approval-trust-ratings

The article shows good practice in showing all the numbers in the trust ratings, where the study was conducted, the sample size and the margin of error. It also showed the ratings of other poliiticians. The source of the survey results is also reliable and the number are objectively presented. Although the first statement I quote, “Not even super typhoon “Yolanda” could significantly dent President Benigno Aquino III’s approval and trust ratings, according to the latest Pulse Asia survey.” is a little bit insensitive because of the devastation that the super typhoon left and the lack of support and action from the national government.

The article shows good media practice however it can be improved by removing unnecessary statements, allowing readers to formulate their own opinions in a critical manner.

On January 12, 2014, Sunday, around 2:30pm I was listening to DWBR, an FM station. A certain DJ was talking about the artist Vic Damone, his life and his exploits in the music industry. This piqued my curiosity so I ran an online search on Damone. It dawned upon me that the DJ was reading straight off the artist’s Wikipedia profile, verbatim, without giving credit to his source. Although it is not unethical, it would have been better if the DJ cited his references so as to be more credible to his listeners.

    TRISH CONCEPCION

    inquirer.net//dutertes-daughter-apprehended-for-overspeeding-in-davao-city

This article was supposed to take an unbiased cover on how traffic enforcers in Davao City use their newly upgraded equipment (i.e. speed guns) to strictly implement the speed limit (Executive Order 39).

First of all, the article places improper emphasis on the fact that the person apprehended was former Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio. The stance of Germelina Lacorte on the story is clearly reflected in how she stresses that public officials are not above the law. The article strikes me as a lousy ”praise release” cover for the government’s lack of back bone in implementing simple traffic rules.

Secondly, is this really news-worthy? It appalls me that an article on a supposed common notion that everyone is even in the eyes of the law reaches the “Hot Reads” section of the Inquirer.net webpage simply because a Duterte is involved.
