  1. Vhong Navarro’s mauling probed
    By Nestor Corrales
    INQUIRER.net (http://entertainment.inquirer.net/131845/vhong-navarros-mauling-probed)

The article gives a clear and concise report on factual statements from both parties involved in the alleged mauling incident. No unfounded claims were made, and both sides were given fair representation. The piece even states the actual date of the incident, due to the news release of the information being a few days late. Incorporating statements made by policemen, the article is able to give a third-party perspective to the case without leaning too far on either side. Chief Senior Superintendent Arthur Felix gave his analysis of the situation, while also reporting on the difficulties involved in the case, such as the tardiness of the claims made, the troubles arising from having the crime go unreported to the Taguig local police, and the conflicts in testimony from the parties involved. The article is an excellent example of a timely and ethical report as it gives a clear view on the story as it develops, cites all statements back to their respective sources and does not allude to any unverified conclusions.

On the Monday, January 27 episode of Brigada on GMA News TV (channel 11, hosted by Jessica Soho), a segment titled “Tubog sa Ginto” exposed the modus operandi of the so-called “acetylene gang” which makes use of acetylene tanks to burrow beneath the ground and reach the vaults of pawnshops. While the intent of this segment was purely educational I believe there is a disadvantage for describing these groups’ methods and broadcasting them on national TV (before 9 PM, even) as some criminal-minded people may pick up the idea and commit similar crimes. Desperate creatives may use these as basis for devising novel ways of committing an identical crime.

In my opinion, it would have been enough for the show to mention that such crimes do occur but illustrating how they happen, in full detail, and showing the actual scenes is too much.

  3. http://m.philstar.com/314190/show/bcb3c6cb1a2a0335f29f666efc8fb053/ – here ma’am is an example of a fair and balanced article regarding the recent beating that happened to abs-cbn host and actor vhong navarro. In this article, GMA denied that Deniece milinette cornejo, who was identified as one of the mastermind in vhong’s beating, was the daughter of gma chairman and ceo atty. felipe gozon because of the circulation of pictures in the internet that suggested she was the grandson of gozon. This article stated that there is no relation between gozon and deniece.

GMA also said in here more importantly that,”the news reporting (we) made (about the issue regarding vhong) is fair, as (we) stated both sides of those involved in the whole incident.” The article gave an objective account of the incident because it did not only evaluate the issue of vhong being beaten but also connected with this, the article mentioned that he was also accused of rape which would also have to be investigated. It is important and an ethical practice in journalism to give a truthful account of a story and to give opportunity for airing all sides of the story; being truthful and well-knowledgeable contributes to the credibility of a journalist; the ability to know the details that matter and to be able to identify mistakes is also a practice of good journalism.

    Link :

The link above shows a coverage of what is happening to Bangsamoro Normalization Annex Framework Agreement with regards to MILF (Moro Islamic Liberation Front) as reported by Jospeh Morong anchored by Grace Lee aired yesterday (Janury 27, 2014) on GMA News TV’s Balitanghali. It was stated that MILF will no longer use firearms and will live as ordinary citizen to be aid by the government.

This report can be said to fair, factual and objective. Fair because Morong was successful in airing both sides, although the topic is about the agreement, it is still a good point to air both sides to let the audience know if they actually agree or disagree with the framework. On the report , once can took notice of Mohagher Iqbal , chief negotiator MILF and Profesor Mirriam Colonel Ferrer, Chief Negotiator of GPH. Factual – because the reporter even showed the concrete hard copy of the agreement , and Morong was there in the exact location where the agreement happened. Objective, one may also realize that the report didn’t simply stop on airing or documenting what happened during the annex , rather it tells the audience the after –effect like (what will the government do with the MILF personnel in terms of socio-economic status, how will the pending case of other MILF personnel in prison be resolved and given amnesty, what will happen to the firearms surrendered to whom and where shall it be located, and the division of terrestrial and marine area)

This news is an example of a fair and good reporting. First because, they provided a source where they got the photo they used for the article, (Screengrab from ABS-CBN interview). Second they were able to get reports and, acknowledged these different sources into writing this brief yet comprehensive article, like the tweet from Kara David (…indicating that Cornejo is standing by her claim that Navarro attempted to rape her inside her condominium unit at The Fort in Taguig City”), initial reports aired on 24 Oras Weekend (based on the Taguig police blotter) and Navarro’s interview with Boy Abunda on ABS-CBN’s Buzz ng Bayan (naming Cornejo as the complainant).

Aside from reporting about Navarro’s side on the issue at hand, they also included an interview via ABS-CBN from the alleged ‘attacker’, Cedric Lee and Vhong’s lawyer, Alma Mallonga who had an interview with TV Patrol. Even if the bulk of this articles was just from different sources, it was important and good practice that they cited their sources.

The article above talks about a soon to rise Nobu hotel in the middle of the year. The said hotel is owned by Robert de Niro, an internationally renowned star.

This article is clear on citing the fact to the public that the hotel company is expanding to Southeast Asia and the Philippines is its first. In a way it does concern public interest especially for those who belongs to the middle to high class income earners. It also boosts up tourism in our country.

The only part that needs to be clear is that the writer should know whether it is telling a news or an advertisement in the news. Either way, this article should have been written in the business or lifestyle section.

Article: Filipino cops accused of using ‘wheel of torture’
    Source: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/570457/filipino-cops-accused-of-using-wheel-of-torture

The article borders on imperceptible as its length doesn’t come close to the standard number of sentences observed by other articles – although ironically, the content of the article was not insignificant in any way. The article was written concisely and concentrated solely on the facts available.

It featured a statement from Commission on Human Rights Chairwoman but could’ve been improved by obtaining a short comment from the police involved in the incident. Readers may assume that the article solely concentrated on the perspective of Human Rights Officials but given the situation and the on-going investigation, slack may be given to the writer, possibly because of the limited information available and the sudden discovery of the “secret detention facility”.
