    On surveys

On November 17, Rappler published an article entitled ‘Aquino gov’t ratings rebound from record low’. According to the article, from a ‘moderate’ +29 net score in the previous quarter, the current government’s satisfaction rating rose to a ‘good’ +35.
The survey showed that 59% of respondents were satisfied with the government’s general performance,16% were ambivalent and 24% were dissatisfied. According to Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, the current survey results “remain historically high compared to other post-EDSA administrations,” showing “continued confidence” in the government.

The SWS survey conducted September 26- 29 covered 1, 200 representatives worldwide with a sampling error of +/-3% for national results and +/-6% for area percentages. The margin of error is a determinant of the reliability of the data generalized based on the representative samples.

  2. Here is my Media Monitor for this week:

    (Link to the article: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/651188/aquino-administration-satisfaction-rating-improves-sws)

The link posted above is an article from the Philippine Daily Inquirer about the third quarter satisfaction ratings of the Aquno administration. The survey was conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) from September 26 to 29 among 1,200 respondents.

The article mentioned about the survey’s margin of error, which was at +/- 3% for the national percentages and ±6% for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

As discussed in class, the sponsors or fund donors of the survey were not disclosed by SWS. But, as mentioned by the reporter in class that BusinessWorld is one of the subscribers of SWS, which is also the first media outfit to publish the results. There have also been instances in the past when BusinessWorld commissions surveys on national issues and election-related surveys.

And still, the questions that were asked to the respondents weren’t divulged, but the topics that the survey covered are key governance areas like disaster response and management, defending territorial rights, foreign relations, and many others. It is key to know what the questions were to determine if the respondents actually knew what the survey was about and if the results actually reflect what has been asked.

  3. SURVEY

GMA News published an article entitled “UPCAT revisions proposed to address discrimination vs public school students”

The article presented the statistics that only 30% of the UPCAT passers are from public schools compared to the 50% passers from private schools. The article presented the statistics in a way that made it seem like the UPCAT discriminates public school students for the reason that only 30% of them passed.

What the article didn’t show is the total percentages of UPCAT takers who were from public and private schools. What if the only reason that there are less public school passers is because less of them took the exam in the first place? It easy to manipulate data and GMA Network should provide all information necessary to the story to make them credible.

  4. Article title: Four farmers, including a minor, brutally killed in Compostela Valley
    Link: http://kickerdaily.com/four-farmers-including-a-minor-brutally-killed-in-compostela-valley/

There are many restrictions in news reporting about minors. One important guideline is to not name the minor victim in cases like murder and rape. This is because they and/or their families are put harm’s way, and their reputation is publicly smeared.

Despite this guideline, many journalists still report the name of minors. Sometimes it is to increase the hype of the news they write. Sometimes it is due to plain negligence.

In the article, the name of the minor who was killed is given. This makes the article unethical, because it discloses the identity of the minor victim, thereby putting his family in danger and staining his memory.

  5. https://anc.yahoo.com/news/caught-on-camera–street-kids-turn-violent-vs–mall-security-guard-000313839.html

The link posted above is a report about street children harassing shoppers at SM The Block in Quezon City. It was discussed in details how one girl became violent when the security guard tried to stop her and her friends from desperately begging and harassing the shoppers inside the mall. The guard was attacked and hurt in the incident, but he showed no reciprocation of violence towards the children. Even though the story of the report didn’t favor the street children, their names remained concealed since they are all minors. This is an example of good news reporting. For ethical news reporting that involve children, names should not be disclosed to public and children shouldn’t be ambushed by reporters for interviews.
