the class resumes the media monitor. The 5th regular media monitor can be posted here, as usual,  with the usual deadline of 7pm Tuesday. [the corrected record of points earned for media monitor work will be posted again in class, that is: Since the purpose of the exercise is to develop the habit of reading or viewing the news with awareness (on a regular basis), students are not allowed to cram,  or to submit more than one post to make up for missed posts except for the two bonus posts that had an extended deadline (Feb. 19 and 20). That is — the media monitor is weekly, or one per week, either regular or bonus: i.e., students who had submitted two (a regular and a bonus) will be credited only one for that week and the other will be credited for the next week.]

  1. On February 23, 2015, Monday, during Nathaniel “Mang Tani” Cruz’s weather I Am Ready report on 24 Oras, anchor Mike Enriquez interrupted him mid-sentence to greet him a Happy Birthday. Mang Tani himself seemed surprised and flustered by what Mike Enriquez did. After the report, Enriquez greeted him yet again.
This, in my opinion, is unethical because 24 Oras is a news and public affairs program, not their own personal talk show. Was that part of the weather report? No. Did the viewers and the public need that information? The answer is also no. Enriquez could’ve waited until the end of the program – where they usually talk for a few minutes – to give his greeting but he did not.

  2. The article about Jinggoy’s denial of attending Enrile’s “alleged” birthday party linked at http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/445169/news/nation/jinggoy-denies-attending-enrile-s-party-says-there-was-none is objective but lacks significance on the surface level [for failing to establish significance and proper background]. Those who are not fully informed about the pork barrel scam would not find it newsworthy enough since it only talks about Jinggoy denying Enrile’s alleged birthday party. So what if he denied it? So what if there was a party?

And the important detail lacking in here was, was there really a party? The reporter did not try to get information from sources other than Jinggoy and Bong. There was no effort in verifying the existence of this alleged party, and in my opinion the article does not accomplish anything by only reporting about hearsay (what Jinggoy said, what Bong said) from people who would obviously know better than to incriminate themselves.

  3. On 27 February 2015, a commotion about the black and blue or white and gold dress caused division among internet users and trended worldwide. The next day, a tweet by @WorldConspiracy disturbed the Twitterverse with a picture of caged children dressed in orange jumpsuits while a lighted torch is in the foreground, appearing to threaten to burn the child captives. The caption says, “ISIS is burning children alive, and is not getting as much attention as a f*cking dress.” I was alarmed with this tweet so I searched if it was true. In an article by madworldnews.com entitled “Is ISIS Threatening To Burn Children Alive In Cages?” it revealed that that the initial report by Speisa which claimed that “ISIS even plans to burn children alive” is a hoax and so is the tweet. It turns out that the picture came from a photo shoot for a protest against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

However, although madworldnews.com corrected the reports, I still found their article unethical because of two reasons. First, they rejected the accusations of ISIS burning children alive but enumerated all the other brutal crimes they have done in detail, which causes alarm and discomfort among the readers. They even added, “it may only be a matter of time before fire is introduced into the savage crimes against little ones,” which is an unnecessary assumption. Secondly, the choice of the word “Muslim” in the line “Christian church founder’s 5-year-old son being cut in half by Muslim militants” is very derogatory because it associates the religious entity to the terrorists, which may be an avenue for them to get discriminated against. All in all, the tweet and two articles were unethical in that they falsely reported news about the ISIS burning children alive, made unnecessary conclusions about them, and even associated the Muslims in general to the ISIS.

After the news announcing Jason Dy’s win from the Voice of the Philippines, Ted Failon congratulates him and quickly side comments to congratulate Gretchen Fullido for getting the number of Hugh Jackman. He also adds a joke about a mall somewhere in Caloocan. It is typical for the broadcasters to comment before ending TV Patrol, and this moment displays improper conduct as a reporter on air. Aside from that, Ted Failon’s mentioning of Hugh Jackman does not concern public affairs and his teasing would have been more appropriate after airing.

The report stated the highest paying jobs in the country based on an online job site. It used a single source, and the information lacked important details. The study focused on actual salaries posted on the online job site, but it wasn’t clear if “actual salaries” would refer to “gross pay” (which includes the basic pay, taxable and non-taxable allowances, overtime pay, night differential, and other benefits) or “net pay” (which includes deductions from SSS/GSIS, PhilHealth, and PAG-IBIG). Moreover, other factors that would affect salary value weren’t reported to have been considered. These factors may include years of experience of employee, rank or position of employee, and geographical location of company. In addition, the report used the term “average.” However, it wasn’t clearly defined if “average” would refer to computation based on mean, median, or mode. The report mentioned the number of job posts with which the study was largely based, but the nature of these posts wasn’t described. Some of the job posts might originate from identical companies, or even a single business conglomerate. Inappropriately, it wasn’t categorized.

    Link to the Article: http://www.mb.com.ph/mercury-drug-opens-1000th-store-in-taguig-city-2/

This article is published last March 1, 2015. It is about Mercury Drug’s 1000th store opening. This violates SPJ Code of Ethics’s provision which states that “Distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two. Prominently label sponsored content”. This is not a news article but is just an advertisement for the Mercury Drug Store. It has failed to put a disclaimer that it is all about the pharmaceutical company having its 1000th store.
The words used by the writer of the article is also biased to the drugstore. He used terms which will help beautify the image of Mercury making this article unethical because instead of informing the people about relevant and important news it became an avenue of propaganda for the said store.

ABS-CBN News handled this matter with heightened sensitivity, protecting the identities of the complainants. The report also contained just about enough detail to give the viewer a clear understanding of it, although the narrative on how the victims were treated were a bit too visual for me (See around the 0:35 to 0:40 mark of the video). Nothing was compromised in this report as more details prior to it were also looked into (skeleton remains and all).

  8. According to KBP Code of Ethics, “News and public affairs programs shall aim primarily to
inform the public on important current events and issues rather than merely to entertain.” However, lately I have observed that most news programs in TV and online platforms mostly cover Jam Sebastian’s battle against cancer. Yes, it is deserves to be included in the airtime, but it is not anymore ethical to dedicate most of it to this kind of story. I noticed that ABS-CBN, GMA News, Rappler, among other media organizations and institutions give the public blow-by-blow updates regarding the story. From his confinement, to the celebrities who visited him and gave him messages.

Also, I also don’t think that exposing his current condition through taking videos and pictures of Jam. Though they have the consent of his parents and relatives, I think this call for one’s editorial judgment.

As the segment of Marc Logan in TV Patrol features a variation of events and particulars, the March 1, 2015 segment presented the widespread and success of ‘Crazy Beautiful You’, a movie that is made and produced within the ABS-CBN company. In the opening of the news, Alvin Elchico even mentioned it being a blockbuster and therefore imposing to the people that it has been watched by many and is therefore a form of an advertisement. Words describing the movie as “nakakabaliw”, “ramdam ko ang kilig”, are some of the many ways of how the newscast depicted the movie as one of the movies that we should be watching. The aim of News and public affair programs should focus on informing the public, rather than imposing ideas to us as to how to feel towards a certain event or happening.
