the photo that has been circulating around Facebook is an image of the dead bodies of students who were murdered during the recent massacre in Kenya.
The faces are not shown, but the photo clearly shows the gruesome killing, which is ethically questionable. First of all, the Internet is not censored and is accessible to a large demographic, including minors, who may be disturbed by the photos. Secondly, this photo violates the SPJ Code of Ethics, which states that journalists must minimize harm and preserve the dignity of their subjects. Specifically, they must show compassion and sensitivity. These victims are private people and posting this photo can negatively affect these victims and their families. Furthermore, making this photo viral may only fuel the terrorists’ cause and result to more exposure and more fear. This photo may raise awareness and show viewers the atrocities happening around the world, but the approach is ethically questionable.

In Banana Split Extra Scoop’s April 11 episode, I believe that the Krissy TV segment was unethical because it explicitly demonstrated how modus operandis are done. First, it showed how snatchers get money while a person picks up something that was intentionally dropped. Second, it role-played how car-nappers get the car when they fool the driver that there is a flat tire. Lastly, it showed how the ipit-gang does its modus among taxi passengers.
It is wrong to air such an episode because it teaches erroneous values that were not given justification even until the end. I know that the show is rated SPG but I think the issue is not just about kids seeing it but also the fact that adults watching it are given the idea, and even specific steps, on how to commit a crime to gain money. I believe that their goal of making each episode comedic to make the audience laugh can be achieved with other situations to avoid misleading the viewers.

The following link features the news regarding the massacre of 147 people from Garissa University in Kenya which happened last April 2. It makes use of photos that were first shared on social media to show the brutality of the killings. However, these photos are graphic because it shows several dead bodies scattered on the floors of the school grounds. Nothing was changed in the photos to lessen these graphic and sensitive images (e.g. making the photos grayscale). Despite the corpses’ faces being covered, the blood on the floor emphasizes the violent event.
The use of these pictures is unethical as it goes against the provision stating that violent, graphic, and sensational images are prohibited. In the article, there is a warning indicating that these pictures may be disturbing for viewers, but this is not enough. There is also a lack of sensitivity toward the victims given that their bodies are displayed in a graphic manner.

News: http://kickerdaily.com/fda-has-initial-findings-on-cause-of-milk-tea-deaths/
The way this news article was written does not at all give significant information that supports its headline. The news article is vague in providing context; they do not give at all a clear and defined perspective regarding the findings of the recent milk tea death. Instead, the author keeps beating around the bush and makes use of long descriptions that lingers on and on, failing to actually provide any concrete information about the occurrence.
The context of the article is simple: the FDA is still in process of confirming what was in the milk tea that caused the death of two people. Yet the author chooses to expound such a premise in nine wordy paragraphs that are basically repetitions of each other. The entire article could’ve been written in at least three paragraphs. We are taught in that news articles must be straight to the point and frank— giving the most important information in a short and concrete manner, yet this article fails to do such.
The fact that this article has had a reach of over 4,000 shares on social media is of no help at all. This news article is poorly written and does not provide proper and significant information because of the way it misleads the reader.

I really don’t understand what’s so newsworthy about this article in Rappler http://www.rappler.com/technology/social-media/88835-pray-for-jollibee asking whether Jollibee is sick because of a photo showing an apparently “malnourished” or “drugged” version of the famous mascot. It didn’t contain any of the elements of news previously discussed in class, other than the fact that it went viral on social media site Twitter. Various users tweeted pictures of the Jollibee mascot posing amusingly and even included their theories and commentaries of what might have happened to Jollibee. It’s hard to take Rappler seriously when it’s writing and posting stuff like this, something that should only be featured on lifestyle or blogging websites.

As discussed in class, these numerical figures does not determine the totality of the voting citizens and is subjective as the increase and decrease of the numerical values can sometimes represent very little to no significance depending on its margin of error. Also, it would be hard for readers to interpret such graphs and figures for not everyone is accustomed with these kinds of representation of such information. It may have words to describe it, but it is not enough to make all the readers understand completely the information regarding the rating drop of Binay.
It was also stated in the report that “Binay remains the top contender for the 2016 presidential post, based on another SWS survey.” but no such information regarding this other survey was given.

News: http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/04/06/15/doc-recommends-surgery-jinggoy
The news was titled “Doc recommends surgery for Jinggoy”. The first violation of this article is that it is not newsworthy because looking at only the title, people wouldn’t need to know such personal details or issues even if it involves controversial people. It doesn’t concern the nation and its people.
Four short sentences from the article were attributed to the issue of surgery, and the rest of the article (seven sentences) suddenly was about the pork barrel scam and those involved. This is an example of an article that went beyond the context or the scope of its title. Thus, this article also violated the SPJ Code of Ethics rule which states, “Never deliberately distort facts or context”.

Headline: Instant patay agad, “KILLER MILK TEA” KINATAKUTAN!
View Image Here: http://bit.ly/1IXyMhW
The headline sensationalizes the story by:
a) Giving it the headline when it is not even a news of high relevance or importance. Instead, it focuses on the lurid curiosity the news earns. The headline also distorts the facts of the situation by carelessly tagging the said milk tea with the word “killer”. – “Never deliberately distort facts or context”
b) Choosing words that will cause fear, panic, and alarm to the readers, By using the words “KILLER MILK TEA”, the headline does not only add harm tot eh incident by tagging it with a highly sensationalized word (“killer”), it also causes stigma to other milk tea establishments. As a news reporter, hemust supply the news with information that is both informative and beneficial to readers.
c) The headline is not newsworthy because it is not even about the event, it is about the “fear” caused by the incident.

This article violates the KBP Broadcast Code of Ethics provision which states that ‘violence shall not be encouraged and horror shall be minimized. Morbid and gory details are prohibited.’ The pictures in the article shows the people who died in the Kenya Massacre last Holy Week. Although it has a warning, it is still not an excuse to let the public see this very morbid and gory detail of the news. The pictures have very high sensitivity.

Isa itong paglabag sa KBP Code of Ethics.

This short article with the headline “Sotto walks out of Senate BBL hearing” is, I believe, clickbait. It violates the provision in the SPJ Code of Ethics which urges media practitioners to “PROVIDE CONTEXT. TAKE SPECIAL CARE NOT TO MISREPRESENT OR OVERSIMPLIFY IN PROMOTING, PREVIEWING OR SUMMARIZING A STORY.” By focusing on Sotto’s walk out, it places undue focus on the senator instead of on the “actual issue” in this situation, which is Iqbal’s refusal to reveal his real. Clearly, this is a misrepresentation and oversimplification of the news in order to lure in unsuspecting readers/viewers.

This is TV Patrol’s report on the milk-tea-poisoning incident. I think that
the report is unethical.
First, because they showed the CCTV footage while the victims are
experiencing poisoning (i.e. vomiting, collapsing, being dragged away by
other people). This is a type of content that is not suitable for kids who
may be watching the show. This may result to fear or trauma, especially if
the young audiences do not have their parents with them will watching.
Second, because the report was not consistent with the confidentiality of
the helper of the store. It is quite obvious that he does not want to show
his face during the interview, but the report still showed his face, which
violates his right to privacy.

On Monday, April 13, it seemed like 24 Oras’s main headline was Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera’s big announcement: that they’re going to have a baby. Before every commercial break, the program would mention it. Before airing the report on this seemingly “big” news, the anchors, along with Pia Guanio had a little talkshow where they talked about how intriguing this news was and how excited they were.
The interview with the couple was done by Jessica Soho, which has to mean something. Why Jessica Soho? She’s in the big leagues, why is she suddenly in showbiz news? This just proves that 24 oras is giving importance on this particular topic when they should be focusing on something else. At the end of the interview, Dingdong Dantes said that they want to ask for privacy but actually it seems like all this interview can give them is more publicity.

This news is about a lady who is supposedly “nakulam”. The broadcast of this news can instil unnecessary fear in the public. Also, with this news, it gives the viewers that the TV news programs believes in “kulam” or witchcraft. The reporter even said some possible solutions such as asking for forgiveness to the whoever is doing it to the lady.
The news program consulted with a priest from the Ministry of Exorcism from the archdiocese of Manila. According to the said priest, just basing on the video, it can not be confirmed that the case really is demonic. The case could be psychological. This was a good move for the news program because they said that the said happening still needed to be investigated. But this need for investigation was not reflected in the title of the said news.

Binay, Trillanes, shot reporter, MILF, China, some more Binay – then Lego. Odd right?
In the bottom right corner of today’s Inquirer frontpage, the paper features Lego and its event in Resort’s World Manila. It is basically an invitation for readers to attend an event, support the brand and later on purchase their merchandise.
While the editorial board made some effort in writing the PR article with a tinge being news-sounding (maybe to lessen the guilt and come off less obvious), I can still see ethical violations committed by PDI. No disclosure was made. Furthermore, there are more relevant news worthy to get the space eaten by Lego. Inquirer has allowed advertising to go first rather than prioritizing what may concern the general public.
Inquirer seems to have a formula in its front page nowadays: they start with “fearless news” and mix it with money-making “news”.

As cited by other news sources regarding the deaths by milk Tea poisoning, the store helper who worked in Ergo tea shop, agreed to give information regarding the milk tea incident but wished to remain anonymous.
However, in the report done by abs-cbnnews, which can be found in the link, http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/video/nation/metro-manila/04/10/15/2-patay-sa-milk-tea-na-hinihinalang-may-lason, They disclosed his name and showed footage clearly showing the subject’s face. Despite his efforts and choice for anominity, as stated by other news sources, abscbnnews seems to have disrespected the person’s right to privacy.

News link: http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/04/13/15/trillanes-2-ca-justices-got-p25-m-each-binay-camp
In this news story, Senator Antonio Trillanes accused two associate justices from the Court of Appeals and a lawyer as the facilitator of bribery in exchange for a favorable decision for the Binay camp.
According to the PPI Code of Ethics, “Getting the other side is a must, especially for the most sensitive and critical stories.” The story achieves that by getting the side of the VP Binay through his spokesperson, the accused justice, and also the lawyer involved in the issue.
The Code of Ethics also say that, “Documents are required, particularly for stories alleging corruption or wrongdoing by public officials or agencies, or private individuals and corporations and groups.” In this story, the allegation of corruption was based only on Trillanes’ filed resolution, but was not able to look into the specific documents filed by Trillanes. There was no attempt to publish the relevant parts of the document or to question Trillanes on the validity/credibility of his sources. Instead, the report focused solely on the reaction of the other sides.
