  1. An post-fight interview with Pacquiao on yesterday’s “Flight of the Century” (term coined from a friend’s post I saw on Facebook)

    Video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CSvsPPpzOs

Yesterday, Filipinos and boxing fans/supporters around the world tuned in to watch the so-called Fight of the Century between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. It was apparent that most were surprised and even disappointed with the result of the boxing match (aka Mayweather’s victory), but perhaps the post-fight interview with Pacquiao by HBO interviewer Max Kellerman was the most disappointing highlight of the show in terms of media ethics. After the fight, Kellerman notably asked the Filipino boxer’s impression of the fight. Pacquiao replied that he thought he won, and Kellerman pressed to ask further on why he thought so. Pacquiao’s surprised reaction to that question was clearly caught on camera and he was made to explain his point using broken English. What made the interview even worse was that Kellerman posed even more leading questions, implying that Pacquiao did not do well enough and lacked a Plan B towards Mayweather’s strategy. The interviewer also asked if the defeated boxer had difficulty because of Mayweather’s size, to which Manny contested, adding further that he’s fought with bigger boxers before.

Kellerman’s decorum during the interview was clearly unethical as it obviously shows the bias he had in favor of Mayweather’s victory. Not only did he display this, but also the ‘disrespect’ (as said by several internet users) he had towards Manny’s defeat. The interview was imbalanced and it only emphasized Manny on the losing side and implied his inability to put up a good fight.

  2. Although it might be amusing to ridicule Mayweather for much longer because of the way he fought Manny, this article http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/entertainment/05/04/15/mayweather-parang-daga-says-mommy-d is hardly newsworthy. The headline is also laughably informal (“Mayweather ‘parang daga’, says Mommy D'”) and doesn’t really add much to what we already know, aside from the fact that it is one-sided and that Manny’s mother isn’t exactly someone you would interview for an expert opinion on boxing.

  3. Article: http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/focus/05/03/15/photo-dead-basit-usman

This article contains a photo of, allegedly, Basit Usman’s dead body. While the headline expresses doubt of the legitimacy of the photo, it was not cleared up in the article that it is not an officially verified photo. The photo is also from an anonymous source which the article does not even describe. This violates the PPI Code of Ethics provision which states: “As a rule, anonymous sources shall be discouraged, especially if they are coming from the public sector or publicly accountable agencies. But when we have to shield the identity of our source.—because revealing it would put his/her job or life in danger—we must: First ascertain the truth of his/her assertions; Determine if he/she is not a polluted source or an interested or beneficial party; Describe him/her in a manner that would establish his/her expertise or right to speak on the subject.”

The headline in that article by the Philippine Daily inquirer reads “Militants use Velosos in Labor Protest Rallies. It is, in itself, is a misleading and loaded headline. It antagonizes the militant groups. It also implies that the Velosos are allowing themselves to be used by other people, and cannot think or stand on their own.

The article is also written in a way that it “sides” with Aquino. It may show the both sides but the way it is written shows the bias of the writer.

  6. On Thursday, April 23, 24 Oras had a report on a viral video of a man who repeatedly struck a dog with a piece of wood until it died. The reporter, Marisol Abduraman, explained that because of the video’s sensitivity, they weren’t going to show the rest of the video.
I think this is commendable, because she explained the situation clearly and did not cause any harm, visually, to the audience and viewers. This report is in accordance with the various codes of ethics that we have discussed in class, taking into consideration the audience and minimizing harm.

  7. Article: http://www.philstar.com/entertainment/2015/04/27/1448181/abs-cbn-tvplus-offers-pay-view-pacquiao-mayweather-fight

This article by the Philippine Star entitled “ABS-CBN TVplus offers pay-per-view of Pacquiao-Mayweather fight” is highly unethical because it is an advertisement of the black box of channel 2. Aside from the explicit promotion in the title, the article also details the price of subscription for the pay-per-view and modes of payment. Aside from this article, a recent news story by TV Patrol aired today (May 4, 2015), although the report is not yet posted online, has its story focused on how people with disabilities in Tahanang Walang Hagdan were able to watch the May-Pac fight because of the free subscription offered to them by ABS-CBN TVplus. At the end of the report, Bernadette Sembrano even mentioned other places were the magic box was used to watch the fight.

For the article, I believe that the author should have included somewhere in the text that he is writing a paid advertisement. Secondly, for the news report, I think the news editors should have just focused on how the PWDs were able to watch and enjoy the May-Pac fight and forget their problems somehow because it is a better angle than the ABS-CBN TVplus being the headline. What came about was an advertisement hidden in a good news story.

    http://www.rappler.com/video/91818-newspaper-mary-jane-veloso-execution

The article posted by Rappler.com is a collated report of erroneous front pages of various newspapers that released premature and, consequently, wrong reports on the death of Mary Jane Veloso a few hours after her death was postponed. The article criticized the three broadsheets for printing headlines that anticipated the death of Mary Jane Veloso and, even worse, misled the public to think that Widodo pushed through with the execution. This article abides by one of the provisions of the SPJ Code of Ethics, which states that the media should expose unethical conduct practiced by their fellow journalists, within or outside their organization.

Moreover, the article mentioned the apology released by The Philippine Daily Inquirer in a statement. It reads, “In our April 29, 2015 issue, the Philippine Daily Inquirer ran an erroneous headline. We deeply regret the aggravation this may have caused Mary Jane Veloso’s family. Our mobile, radio, social, and web platforms were able to report Mary Jane’s last-minute reprieve. We promise our readers to do a better ob. We are revamping newsroom processes to better inform and serve our readers and stakeholders. We share in the nation’s joy: Mary Jane lives!” This statement illustrates another provision of the SPJ Code of Ethics, which is to “acknowledge mistakes and correct them promptly.” The Philippine Daily Inquirer, although having committed a grave mistake, was able to slightly redeem itself through its humble apology.

    Link to the video: http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/video/lifestyle/classified-odd/04/29/15/ufo-namataan-sa-pampanga

This video which was published last April 29, 2015 violates Article 13 (Superstition and the Occult) of the KBP Code of Ethics which states that “Programs featuring superstitious and pseudo-scientific beliefs and practices, such as supernatural powers, foretelling of the future, astrology, phrenology, palm-reading, numerology, mind-reading, hypnotism, faith healing or similar subjects shall be careful not to induce belief in them. Care shall be taken to prevent the exploitation of people who may be
easily swayed by such superstitious and pseudo-scientific beliefs and practices.”

Its headline entails and encourages the viewers to believe that there are such pseudo-scientific phenomena happening in our country. This is unethical because these kinds news report has no evidence and its certainty is still not sure. This just leads the people to have false beliefs about aliens and unidentified flying objects.

The viral video enclosed with this article was not in accordance with the general provisions regarding journalism ethics. Although the video would stop right when the man was about to hit the dog, as a general viewer, I hadn’t been aware of that initially. The news clip gives off the impression that what is going to be shown is the entirety of the violent dog beating. The video should’ve began with a disclaimer stating that what was about to be shown was a snippet of the viral video, while of course, not including the beating of the dog.

Although the news agency followed the proper means of not showing the direct form of violence by excluding the actual dog beating, the way they edited the video was redundant. I had thought that at some point, the video wouldn’t stop just as the man was about to hit the dog and would eventually show the act of beating. Every repetition made me feel more and more uneasy about the news report.

As I mentioned earlier, to quash these qualms, a warning or disclaimer should have been disclosed before and during the report.

    Link of article: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/688875/militants-use-velosos-in-labor-protest-rallies

The past weekend has been a low time for Philippine press, ironic that we also celebrated the World Press Freedom Day that it happened. It is taught in the academe to mass communication students, or soon to be media practitioners, about different theories in making news or media outputs, one is framing. It is saddening that our press or news organizations use or exploit this power to mislead their readers. In May 2, 2015, after the Labor day mobilization, many articles, specifically that of Inquirer, had same or in essence had the same article title: “Militants use Velosos on labor protest rallies”. According to the Philippine Journalist’s Code of Ethics: I shall scrupulously report and interpret the news, taking care not to suppress essential facts nor to distort the truth by omission or improper emphasis. I recognize the duty to air the other side and the duty to correct substantive errors promptly. In the said article, the focus is the job crisis in the Philippines, citing that of Mary Jane’s case. However, the placement of the word “use”, discredit or give negative image of the said event. Even using the word “militants” together with the word “use”. They could have just used a different term or different title to better highlight the point of the protest. However, in this title, it already gave a notion and affected how people will perceive the article. It is as if it is saying that the militants are taking advantage of the issue to forward their calls. However, even before this, there have been calls for the job crisis in the country and the labor export policy. And what the militants did is to connect this issue to the larger issue of the people and not isolating this case, for it happens in reality, every single time, not just to one person.

The news article describes the involvement of the MILF and the military in the encounter that lead to the death of suspected bomber Usman. Usually, only the side of the government is reported during conflict but the article is able to balance the view somewhat by obtaining the side of the MILF through chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal and vice chair for political affairs Ghadzali Jaafar. Although the issue involving Usman is much more complicated, there were no simplistic stereotypes of “terrorism” associated to Islam. Also, the article is able to provide context of the ongoing peace process through the BBL. The article is commendable for avoiding dangerous, oppressive Muslim stereotypes that are associated to terrorism and for providing a longer context.

    “#BrandRap #Sarap”

My past media monitors have been about stealth advertising and how the consumerist culture penetrates the supposed unblemished news journalism. For a period of time, I’ve focused on Inquirer’s frontpage and noticed their habit of selling at least a corner of their banner to the advertisers.

This time, I had to commend Rappler’s Facebook portal. Rappler is a known news media outlet in the virtual realm. What sets them apart from other social media outlets is their effort to distinguish advertisements from news articles. They disclose their brand partnerships by putting the witty hashtag #BrandRap at the end of every advertorial post.

To me, Rappler has set a good example among its competitors as they are mandated to shun hybrids of advertisements and news reports, according to the SPJ Code of Ethics. I think it’s time for others to redo their advertising schemes. On this angle, we can consider Rappler a rare breed.

    Link to the article:  http://www.theweek.co.uk/62196/Mayweather-Pacquiao-fight-of-the-century-Las-Vegas-betting#ixzz3ZFyPQyc0

The Week, an international news publication, released an article entitled “Mayweather vs Pacquiao: who’s betting on Money or Manny” on May 2. Basically, this article talked about the much awaited fight which is bound to take place the following day with the “Fighters of the Century.” Aside from the misleading headline itself; it has also violated the provision in the KBP Code of Ethics which states that “A person’s race, religion, color, ethnicity, gender, and physical or mental disability shall not be used in a way that would embarrass, denigrate, or ridicule him.” It could be seen in the article how Floyd Mayweather is coined as “Money Mayweather” to make an irony or call the attention of the readers. It is also noticeable how the writer is in favor of Pacquiao with the choice of words given to Mayweather. While it shows statistics that Mayweather is believed to be a stronger fighter by the experts than Pacquiao, it could be seen as to how the news is biased, which is unethical.
