http://www.philstar.com/video-features/2015/05/09/1452568/watch-ad-takes-you-away-very-stressful-day
this article published on Philstar and displayed as one of the “videos to watch” on the website’s main page is really just an advertisement for Nescafe disguised as an article. The article doesn’t really provide any useful information about the product or the commercial that is already being aired on television; the writeup is basically just an extended form of the brand’s tagline and main selling point. Additionally, a link to share the video “to your friends” is also included at the bottom of the writeup, and I don’t know how much Nescafe paid (or if it even had to pay at all) to get that online media space from Philstar.

The following video is a Jessica Soho episode on an investigation of a viral video of a suspected mermaid swimming near a beach resort in General Santos City. Towards the end of the video, it is clarified that it could have only been a dugong or a sea cow seen swimming by the shallow waters. I would have to say that there is unethical coverage because the premise of the video encourages the belief on superstition and occult, which violates article 13 of the KBP code of ethics. Although that the mini-documentary clarified that there was no mermaid involved, the start of the show was very misleading and could be a turn-off or a laughing matter to viewers, despite the coverage providing interesting information on the dugong, which is native to Philippine biodiversity. Additionally, the purpose of the coverage was not very clear on whether to spark viewers’ interest on suspected mermaids or to provide tidbits of knowlege on dugongs.

One week after the tagged “Fight of the Century,” news regarding Mayweather and Pacquiao are still the talk of the town. An example of this is Rappler.com’s article: “WATCH: Mayweather makes shoulder injury excuses after Castillo fight.” This anonymous work disappointed me because there is too much subjectivity. Compared to other articles that somehow try to hide their biases although they still show, this article seems to be written as a personal attack to Mayweather. In fact, it doesn’t seem like a scholarly article but a long Twitter post by a Mayweather-hater. It is obvious in the lines such as “Once upon a time, it was Floyd Mayweather making excuses about a shoulder injury after a fight many people felt he lost” and “Mayweather has had one instance where he performed poorly enough that a significant portion of boxing observers felt he deserved to lose. And ironically enough, he blamed the performance on a shoulder injury.”
As responsible journalists, we believe that it is our duty to inform the public through our platforms. However, never was it our duty to shame a person or side with another, regardless of nationality or the situation. We distinguish ourselves from writing mere posts on Facebook or Twitter by the professionalism and goal that we have: to relay non-opinionated and useful information in the service of the people and the country.

This video which came from the magazine show Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho and was uploaded last May 11, 2015 violates the KBP Code of Ethics Article 13 (Superstition and the Occult) of the KBP Code of Ethics which states that “Programs featuring superstitious and pseudo-scientific beliefs and practices, such as supernatural powers, foretelling of the future, astrology, phrenology, palm-reading, numerology, mind-reading, hypnotism, faith healing or similar subjects shall be careful not to induce belief in them. Care shall be taken to prevent the exploitation of people who may be
easily swayed by such superstitious and pseudo-scientific beliefs and practices.”
This is a feature about mermaid sightings in General Santos City. This leads the people to believe that there are kinds of fictional creatures. This is unethical because this kind news report has no evidence that there relly are mermaids existing in this world.

Pamagat: ‘China fabricating stories to cover up marine destruction in Spratlys’

The article linked above talks about the squabble between Dra Vicki Bello and Willie Revillame. While they may be public personalities, the issue discussed is very petty and does not merit a news article. It violates Art 1 Sec 1 of the KBP Code of Ethics which states that “News and public affairs programs shall aim primarily to inform the public on important current events and issues rather than merely to entertain.” It also violates a provision of the SPJ Code of Ethics which states that journalists should “DILIGENTLY SEEK SUBJECTS OF NEWS COVERAGE TO ALLOW THEM TO RESPOND TO CRITICISM OR ALLEGATIONS OF WRONGDOING” because it failed to get the side of Willie Revillame regarding the issue.

Normal heavy traffic in EDSA is back but some advertisers still seem to fail to get over the Pacman hype. Their frontpage for today features a minor banner photo (I called it as such because there is another banner photo in the page) of Manny Pacquiao’s billboards along EDSA. I get the point of framing it in such a way that while your cruising along EDSA, these ads translate to what might have been a grander hero’s welcome had Pacquiao won, as the caption reads these billboards “saluting” the People’s Champ will arrive in Manila tomorrow from Los Angeles. However, it’s interesting to note that both Smart and Rexona’s brand logos are explicitly displayed in the picture. It’s easy to dismiss this as a coincidence, that it is rather an innocent photo of two ads by the boxing champ. However, why capture media from another form of media in the first place? Fishy, eh?
SPJ Code of Ethics holds firmly that stealth advertising which robs space off from legitimate news should be differentiated clearly. Otherwise, the act must be disclosed.
The Philippine Star, where they boldly stress that truth shall prevail, apparently also makes compromises in order to make money.

The May 11 episode of TV Patrol aired the “Tara, Grets” segment of Gretchen Fullido. In this particular episode, she took part of the a dance workshop by G-Force. Article 1 Section 1 of the KBP Code of Ethics says, “News and public affairs programs shall aim primarily to inform the public on important current events and issues rather than merely to entertain.”
This remains a questionable practice from TV Patrol, as news should be informative to the public on issues of national public interest. The segment seemingly just serves as an advertisement of the summer dance workshop. Even if in case it is actually a paid segment then TV Patrol should be transparent about it.

There is a lifestyle article from Inquirer that tries to be an inspiring miracle story but is in fact an advertorial promoting tourism in the Lady of Lourdes grotto in Bulacan. The article seems to describe a miraculous grotto in Bulacan that has withstood different forces, along with the miracles that its caretaker has experienced arguably because of the caretaker’s devotion to the grotto. THe article also vividly describes the beauty of the scenery around the grotto, in an attempt to sell the idea of going to the place, while using religion to attract devotees as a means to promote tourism in Bulacan.

This is a TV Patrol coverage of a drunk man trying to fight and escape MMDA officers after the former got in an accident while riding a motorcycle. I think the purpose of the reporter is to show the audience the actual process of the officers arresting someone and maybe show bad effects of drunk driving. But the actual footage might cause fear or trauma, especially to kids that may be watching the particular news story. Maybe the element that is missing in the video to make it ethical is a warning before showing it that parents should guide their children who might be watching.

The way this news article was written is ethical. It involves an 11 year old boy– a minor– who had had been previously part of the NPA and eventually surrendered. The author didn’t disclose the young boy’s identity, and by doing so showed the proper practice. It’s important to protect the identity of minors, especially when involved in sensitive cases such as this. What’s involved here is a strong armed “terrorist” group known in the Philippines. It is against the law to enforce such minors, as stated in the context of the article. Disclosing the identity could further harness damage on the present and future reputation of the child.
In regard to the context of the article, there was proper background information provided. It was good practice that the laws stating as to why the surrender was required was laid out. This gives supplement information further strengthening the headline and providing further understanding for the general public.

While it is commendable that they used surveys and all, it did come from another course: SWS. They didn’t conduct interviews from Filipinos qualifying for the survey, which could have further solidified their claim. Another POV they forgot to take is that of the critics of the administration. They could have at least taken their side and presented their claims as well. This report is clearly in favor of one side.
This violates the PPI Code of Ethics, Section III, subsection 2, which states that “Single-source stories must be avoided as a rule. There is always the imperative to get a second, third or more sources, the contending parties to an issue, the expert source, the affected party, the prominent and the obscure, in the story. We must strive at all times to ascertain the truth of our sources’ assertions.”

News Link: http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/lifestyle/05/11/15/mothers-day-tribute-marks-airasias-new-manila-hk-flight
ABS CBN published an article entitled “Mother’s Day tribute marks Air Asia’s new Manila-HK flight” last Sunday. Basically, it’s framed like as if it’s a Mothers’ Day special where in moms can relax and enjoy their day for a free ride and hotel recommendation. However, it could be clearly seen how it’s an advertorial which aims to endorse Air Asia’s new travel packages specifically their P1 flight from Manila to Hong Kong. However, it wasn’t disclosed how Air Asia paid for this article. This article violated the provision in the SPJ Code of Ethics which asks the journalists to “distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two” and to “prominently label sponsored content.”
