Anthony Taberna files for a leave of absence from ABS-CBN, as his beliefs (being an Inglesia ni Cristo member) may cause a “conflict of interest” in his two current affairs shows.
Here is his Instagram statement:
“Ako po bilang aktibong miyembro ng Iglesia ni Cristo ay nasa isang sitwasyon na hindi maaaring maging credible sa pagtalakay sa isyung may kinalaman dito. Mayroon po akong paniniwalang pangrelihiyon at mayroon din naman akong tungkulin bilang mamamahayag, bagay na hindi po maaaring pagsamahin ngayon dahil sa tinatawag na conflict of interest.”
I commend Taberna’s intiative to take a leave of absence in the midst of Iglesia ni Cristo’s controversy the past weekend. He acknowledged that by being a member of INC, his beliefs may offend or may cause disagreements in his work as a media practitioner.

[Link to tweet: twitter.com/inquirerdotnet]
Today, I saw another strange tweet from The Philippine Daily Inquirer’s official Twitter account, @inquirerdotnet. The tweet said, “Man claims his 19-inch penis making his life hard inq. ph “, linking to the full article. First, it feels like a very sensationalist article with a very striking title. I can’t help but wonder if the use of the word “hard” was sexual innuendo, because it comes off as that. It’s inappropriate for Inquirer to tweet something like this as I find it a little too visual and intense for some younger Twitter users and readers of their website.
When I read the article, I was relieved that it was written very matter-of-fact and straight to the point, but I felt like it wasn’t really relevant enough to be posted on the Inquirer website since the man isn’t even from this country (or anywhere near it) and it definitely wasn’t relevant enough to also be tweeted by the Twitter handle, where even more people can see it. I feel like they must have tweeted the scandalous article (with an accompanying suggestive stock photo) so that their page would generate more hits.

Last Monday (Aug 31), I chanced upon an advertisement on Channel 2, ABS-CBN at around 7 PM. It looked like a campaign advertisement for Cong. Mark Villar, Manny Villar’s son, and current representative of Las Piñas. Although the advertisement did not mention anything election-related, it sure looked like a campaign advertisement, complete with the slogan at the end “Markang Villar.” Even if campaign ads for the 2016 elections aren’t allowed yet, it seems that Mark Villar’s staff found a way around the rules by not putting any clear, identifiable campaign-related elements, so it technically doesn’t fall under “campaign ad.” I find it to be a little dishonest to see a handful of senatorial-hopefuls to be doing this so early, and I hope the COMELEC finds a way to penalize those who find loopholes in their election rules, or to clarify their rules altogether.
Upon further research, I found a link to the Facebook ad. It can be found here: facebook CongMarkVillar

” 24Oras: Exclusive: 14-anyos na lalaki, sugatan nang saksakin din ng binatilyo”
From the introduction of Mike Enriquez, in which he said that the cause of the crime is just from a single bad look(masamang tingin), I expected that the news will also expound on that but they did not. That introduction could have mislead people. I think was a good thing that Cesar Apolinario was able clear things out from the interview the victim. Because of that he was able to get the first-hand information that the victim himself do not know any particular reason for him to be assaulted. The number of suspects have also been gauged to 10 people. Details have been extracted that could have not been known from the cctv footage alone. All these gave credibility to the news.
The news was able to exercise minimizing harm by putting the victim’s identity under a pseudo name, especially knowing that he is a minor and also blurring his face and his mother during the interviews. In the latter part of the story where the victim and his father was able to have one of the suspects caught, balance in reporting was evident. The mother of the said suspect was also interviewed, with respect and right censorship too.
I commend the news for giving out details and even knowing the action that the authorities ought to do, specifying the kind of case this crime is under, who will temporarily handle the said suspect, and further investigations.

My family and I were watching the grand finals of The Voice Kids last weekend and during the commercial break, Rodrigo Duterte’s advertisement was shown.
It was a smart move. According to AGB Neilsen Philippines, The Voice Kids is one of the most watched TV programs in the Philippines today and it was the season finale episode so it was assumed that there were more viewers watching the program.
Duterte’s name has always been involved when people talk about 2016 presidentiables. As of now, Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte does not confirm his candidacy for the 2016 presidential elections yet but the video says that what Duterte did to Davao, he can also do to the whole country: “Dumami ang trabaho, nakapag-aral ang mga bata, sumaya ang bawat pamilya. Pwedeng magkaganito ang buong Pilipinas. Kailangan lang ng tapang at malasakit.”
People know him as a tough-talking, straightforward and courageous person for not backing down to anyone even to the criminals. The video showed Duterte’s “other side”–the caring side. Thus his tagline, “tapang at malasakit.” In the video, it was also stated that Davao was the 9th safest city in the world with the mayor saying the dialogue “May katahimikan sa Davao.”
I personally think that this is premature campaigning because of the way he ended his video, it was like he’s giving a promise to the Filipino people that how Davao is right now, he will do to the whole country if he’s given the chance. The part when he says “Kailangan lang ng tapang at malasakit,” I was thinking that he is saying “kailangan lang ako” for our country to progress.

KILLER DADDY
3 anak pinatulog bago pinatay
Link: http://www.abante-tonite.com/issue/sep0215/crime_story01.htm
This news article tackled the killing of three children by their father. I feel as if too much information and details were given. The Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics state, “Show compassion for those who may be affected by news coverage. Use heightened sensitivity when dealing with juveniles, victims of sex crimes, and sources or subjects who are inexperienced or unable to give consent.”
The news article dealt with three victims who were minors aged 14, 9, and 5, and yet, their names were disclosed. To be ethically correct, minors should never be identified. To add to this, the article included the first and last name of the suspected killer, who is also their father. In my opinion, instead of stating the real names of the victims and the suspect, the writer/reporter could have hidden their names or could have given them aliases. This way, it will also protect the family member and the people who are affected by this news. The article also disclosed the exact address of the victims and suspect. I don’t think this was necessary, again, to protect those who are affected by the incident.
Also, I don’t think the title perfectly fits the article. The content wasn’t about putting his children to sleep whether it be by drugging them or if they fell asleep naturally. It’s misleading and inaccurate.

My dad came home from work the other day and he brought with him a number of Duterte campaign stickers. Though the stickers did not specifically state his presidential candidacy, it’s obvious that they are referencing the upcoming elections with the words “Duterte 2016”. My dad said that one of his coworkers gave out these stickers, saying that his coworker was in “Duterte’s inner circle” and that they were gearing up support for Duterte’s presidential candidacy by way of these promotional stickers. Although my dad is a lawyer and did acknowledge that it violates the premature campaigning rule, he didn’t mind because he was also a big supporter of Duterte. Lastly, a few days before that, I saw the same sticker logo on the hood of a passing car so it does seem that they are legitimate and not just the work of an overzealous Duterte fan.
(I sent a picture of the campaign stickers to Ate Raquel as instructed.)

Patricia Evangelista wrote her own coverage of the Iglesia Ni Cristo rally. The past week on social media has seen a strong backlash against the INC for their rally which caused major traffic jams in Manila for the duration of the rally. The anger is valid, but there has also been a strong sense of condescension towards INC. Most news reports, such as this one, paint them as a homogenous group of mindless followers who are blindly rallying.
This is a particular instance where sounding objective is tricky. Evangelista’s tone is condescending, and more literary than journalistic, but this is still presented as news coverage. It’s not flattering to the INC, and even the INC have been responding to the backlash they’ve been getting online. Perhaps the balance would be to report on the events and effects of the INC rally such as traffic jams, blocking EDSA, leaving trash at Shaw, etc., but to attack members of INC ad hominem seems to be unethical because then the report would not be objective anymore. Then again, it seems like, in popular media, a negative view of the INC is what gets traffic and more readers anyway. Again, it’s up to media practitioners to choose how to portray these events. Objectivity is a contentious issue here.
Also, allow me to disclaim that I’m not affiliated with INC.

A week before Anthony Taberna decided to take a leave from ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, his newly opened cafe was found riddled with bullets. Until this moment, there is still no official report on the motive behind the attack. For two reasons, Taberna’s leave of absence becomes beneficial. First,it was the best move to avoid any conflict of interest in the coverage of issues about the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) community. As a broadcast journalist and radio commentator, Taberna does not want to sacrifice his credibility when delivering news. Also, as an active INC member, he has certain religious beliefs that could result to compromising his objectivity. Second, journalists have their right to protect themselves from threats and danger. Even if the decision might seem personal, I think Taberna did what is right to protect not only himself but also his family.
In a statement, ABS-CBN Integrated News head Ging Reyes said the company respects Taberna’s personal decision to take a leave. In that way, the network can also be saved from conflict of interest, resulting to impartiality.
Moreover, expelled INC Minister Isaias Samson is Taberna’s uncle. Samson is the one who filed a criminal complaint of serious illegal detention against the INC’s Sanggunian members. Taberna’s direct relation to Samson might give rise to another conflict of interest.
Aside from Taberna, Gerry Baja, also an active INC member and radio commentator in DZMM, also took a leave at the midst of the INC rally. Taberna and Baja are hosts of the afternoon program Dos Por Dos. I have to admit that whenever I listen to their program and if any issue about INC is being raised, they choose to remain mum. In their case,as journalists, they must still deliver news about INC because avoiding the issue makes them biased in a way. Journalists are supposed to be professional.
I believe that broadcast journalists are entitled to their opinion when it comes to commentaries and editorials. However, objectivity is and will always be a must in delivering news. But, this will never mean that journalists are to avoid their responsibilities whenever an issue involving their beliefs will be raised.

“A bus carrying Iglesia ni Cristo protesters to their gathering on EDSA-Shaw crashed into an SUV at the corner of Balete Drive and Aurora Boulevard Sunday night, driving the SUV into an LRT pillar at the said corner.”
The first paragraph of the article talks about passengers of Iglesia Ni Cristo in a bus involved with an accident along Aurora boulevard. In the entire article, the passengers being named as Iglesia Ni Cristo is not related in the entire accident. Therefore, them, being an Iglesia Ni Cristo, should not be emphasized in the article. The fact that it is the lead, gives the readers a notion that since they are a member of INC, the said incident makes the news more noteworthy. The focus of the article should be more of the accident itself, the number of passengers who got injured and how the accident happened.

This article posted in Abante Tonite’s website tackled the issue concerning the INC. However, I can’t help but notice the tone in which it has been written. From the title itself, one can already see the direction of this article. (BABALA NG MALACAÑANG: INC HINDI NA MAKAKAULIT SA EDSA!) It has an apparent bias towards the government. This can be seen because (1) they only featured the government’s side of the issue and (2) their statements, choice of words clearly show that they think that INC is wrong. For example, they started their article with “Hindi na makakaulit ang mga Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) sa pagsasagawa ng kilos-protesta sa EDSA dahil sa makakatikim na sila ng ngipin ng batas.” The framing of the article and the way it was projected is not fair.
The SPJ Code of Ethics clearly states that ethical journalism should be accurate and fair. I believe that being accurate and fair means that journalists should show both sides of the story; which was not done in this article. The article is very pro government. The media is powerful in a way that it can gravely influence what their readers believe in. It is also problematic as it involves a particular religious group. Although the article does not really discriminate the group directly, it put the INC in a bad light. The PPI code of ethics states that a reporter “shall not, in any manner, ridicule, cast aspersions on, or degrade any person by reason of sex, creed, religious belief, political conviction, cultural and ethnic origin,”.
Personally, I didn’t think that the article gave the issue justice. Aside from it showing just one side of the story, it used strong words such as “nabiktima” and “nabuwisit” to describe the commuters’ reaction to the traffic. I think this was unnecessary in getting their point across. I checked the article if it was a commentary or editorial of some sort but this was labeled as their “top news” story. One of the things I learned in class is that news should always be objective regardless of personal opinions and convictions. I also learned through this article that using strong words to make a point is also not advisable since it can color a statement.
*Disclaimer: I am not in any way affiliated with INC.

And update on the news: http://baguioheraldexpress.com/news/region/no-signs-of-vaginal-physical-injuries-of-gang-rape-victim
4 suspects, including 2 policemen, arrested for gang rape in Baguio
Reading this article, the topic is again the very sensationalized news of rape. And we all know it’s a bad thing, really bad. And for you to be involved in any way, especially as the victim herself, you wouldn’t want any information about you leaking to the public. Well yeah, her name was not stated, but it very specifically said that she was living in the Maharlika Livelihood Center, which upon research is just a small community in Baguio. It shouldn’t have been mentioned in the first article at all.
However, I did like the fact that they did not prejudice against the suspects, even if they revealed the names. They have actually stated that these people are still innocent, unless proven guilty, which is correct.
Another good thing is that in the updated version of the news, they have followed up on the case leading to knowing that the suspects were not under the influence of drugs and that the victim did not obtain any injuries in the genital area. Overall, they did a good job on giving out information and researching on the topic at hand.

Like any other teenager these days, I was scrolling through my Facebook news feed during my free time. While scrolling through several statuses of people I know, I came across a certain picture shared by a friend of mine from a Facebook page named “Binay Pa Rin 2016”. I was like, “What the eff?!” It was a picture of Binay eating in a food court of a mall and the caption of the photo was:
“Napakasimple at magpakumbabang tao talaga si VP Binay. Game kumain kahit saan! #BinayforPresident http://www.binayparin.com”
Like seriously?! If all it takes to be the president of the Philippines is to eat in a food court of a mall, I should have been president a long time ago. Please… talbog na talbog ko si Binay, I can even eat on the floor. I get it, it is a publicity stunt to show the Filipino people that Binay is ordinary. It is to create an image of Binay that would appear more relatable to the masses. It’s obviously a way of campaigning by the party of Binay. For an educated person, this post appears foolish.
I looked at the date of the photo to check if it is a recent one. It appears that the photo was posted on March 29 and was just resurfaced by comments from both pro-Binay and anti-Binay. So it seems that for our weekly homework, this certain photo is invalid BUT I want to give emphasis that the caption used a hashtag (#BinayforPresident). When you create a hashtag for your post, it will become searchable for the longest time, the more if other people join in to your hashtag. If this isn’t enough, I went to the Facebook page itself and found out that the page posts everyday.about how people stated that they were going to vote for Binay and every good thing Binay did for the country with the hashtags #BinayforPresident and #BinayPaRin.
I have no idea if Binay knows about this said page, I’m going to give him the benefit of a doubt that maybe, just maybe, whoever created the page doesn’t work directly under Binay and may just really be a person who strongly supports the presidentiable candidate. I commend them because now in the time when your opinions can be heard once you post it through the net, it is actually a smart move on using hashtags and campaigning through these means. HOWEVER, I strongly believe that what they are doing is wrong given that they started campaigning many months before the given campaign period. If they think that this is a way of a headstart, think again. This just gave them more negative feedback.

Another case of humantraficking was reported last September 2 by GMA News. Two pimps were arrested by the NBI for alledgedly pimping high school students to foreigners, in exchange for P2,000. The authorities were able to rescue the high school students.
The report seemed like an exclusive report of GMA because their cameraman, who used a Go Pro camera, seemed to be involved in the operation. He was able to film the entire undertaking. While I am strongly displeased that they had to cover the whole operating knowing that there minors involved, I still commend it for blurring some parts of it, protecting the minors’ welfare and privacy.

The article is about a photo of a migrant child’s body washed ashore the beach of Turkey. This photo spread like wildfire in social media for the past days, believed to be a reflection of the migrants’ crisis. It was later on found out that the child was a Syrian kid from one of the migrant boats that sunk days ago.
I think the article was good, giving first the context of the photo and why it spread like wildfire. It also gave the backstory of the migrant crisis happening, also broadening issues involved and informing readers of what is happening in some areas of the world.
However, I think that it was wrong that they named the child even if he was already dead. Just thinking that the world already sees his dead image is already kind of cruel even though it was used to inform and to get people’s attention and concern. Another thing is that they didn’t name the people that should be named like the coastguard team who verified the body, the department heads that gave the statements (they only gave the department) and others. I think more than the child, these people who are thought to be concerned (as they must be reliable sources) are the ones that should be named and be given the right information so the readers can also verify the validity of the news. They could have also asked for people’s opinion regarding the issue, especially the people who found the dead child’s body. Or at least people’s view and opinion on the happening migrant issue. How the body was found wasn’t explained as well. Also, they could have added to the article the sentiments or statements that people spread online aside from the hashtag because these little shares and tweets are also forms of opinion.

This report was about 2 suspects and 3 victims involved in Bugaw activity, also known as human trafficking or prostitution, in Manila. All of them were women while 3 of the victims saved by the security officials were minors.
However while I commend the news report for concealing the identity of the minors, I believe that they also missed out on a particular code of ethics in journalism. They news report may have protected the minors, but they forgot to protect the suspects as well. First of all, they were only suspects in an alleged prostitution activity, they have yet to be convicted. Publicizing their identity as if they already were was, I believe, a mistake made by the news reporters.
Second of all, as suspects, the news reporters weren’t aware of what this report could do to the suspects’ social status as women. Because based on one of PPI’s code of ethics, a journalist must never compromise the fragile status of women in society by being careless about their report. Therefore, in my opinion, the journalists should have either concealed their identities upon publishing the report, or waited for the suspects to be officially convicted by the law.

Bongbong Marcos’s TV commercial — “Ilabas, Galing ng Pilipino… tumayo tayo!”
Link to full version of TV commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9SmcmX3gNfg
I recall seeing a slightly shorter version of this video, titled “Ilabas ang galing ng Pilipino… tumayo tayo,” run as a commercial during the first commercial break of a regular broadcast of TV Patrol about two weeks ago.
The video shows Bongbong Marcos as a champion of many different sectors (e.g. students, the elderly, young professionals, mothers, farmers and etc) as he’s shown interacting with them over light banter, raising their arms up arbitrarily, and proudly taking a selfie with them. Bongbong Marcos isn’t really flaunting his achievements in this video but does seem to suggest how likable he is.
Bongbong Marcos has already expressed his intention of running for Vice President in 2016. But the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), apparently, still doesn’t consider this video or others like it to have violated RA No. 9006 or “The Fair Election Act” as a form of premature campaigning. The filing of candidacies still hasn’t started yet and Marcos never declares in the video the position he may wish to file candidacy for.
Therefore, Marcos and his camp could argue that they haven’t really asked the public to vote for him yet.
This is because the only real message the video conveys explicitly is that Bongbong Marcos and dozens of other paid actors endorse Bongbong as a champion for the greatness of Filipinos.
What makes Filipinos so “great” to Marcos here isn’t even explained. The objective of the video is clearly not to say that Filipinos are great, but that Bongbong Marcos believes we are great.
The real purpose of the video then lies in the fact that it tries to convince viewers that Bongbong is a likable, agreeable guy — because who doesn’t like the vague idea of “raising the greatness of Filipinos”? — as if that were enough criteria for the voting public to elect him into office as the President or the Vice President.

The news is about the suspected murder of a girl by her own boyfriend. The whole article and video didn’t really disclose any relevant information. The news focused more on the suspect and his outside characteristics. The article should have more information about the murder and the investigation but instead, it focused on trivial matters that had absolutely no relationship with the case. This is one unethical part of this news.
Another unethical part is the headline. I do not see the point of having to include “gwapitong lalaki”. It has no relation and relevance to actual case. The whole article is insensitive because a murder case is something serious but the article made it look like a joke. There is no formality in the whole way the news was delivered.

“Papiliin kita: barilin ko ang bayag mo, i-preso kita o kainin mo ang upos ng sigarilyo mo,”
The word ‘reprimand’ was not enough. It was just too weak for a title for this news article. Though it was not misleading, I honestly still think that the news title lacked the rigor it must have to fully grasp the context of the article.
So I stumbled upon this article because at first I thought it was somehow related to Duterte’s premature campaign for the 2016 election. But right after I’ve finished reading, I appreciated the braveness of how it was written. It was bold and unfettered. However, it is quite questionable to believe in the content because it was stated that the source of the writer was just from a Facebook post of the former North Cotabato Governor Manny Piñol.
I feel like the author compromised somewhere in the selection of title because his intention was minced down to ‘reprimand’ when he can use ‘threaten’ or ‘blackmail’ instead. In light with the election and Duterte’s power, it was most likely that the author was told to make it sound of lesser gravity so as to avoid conflict with the politician. And personally, if this article says the truth, I still can’t believe that Duterte was capable of doing such act.

Media Monitor Regarding the Issue of Lumads and the Use of Raw Crime Photos:
It is often specifically stated in different Codes of Ethics that the use of scene of the crime photos featuring bloody corpses or casualties should at least be rendered in black and white to minimize the gore effect of the photo. With this statement for the massacre of three Lumad leaders, the photos were used as background to assumingly intensify the awareness on the issue.
But of course, while it may lean on propaganda, it is quite unethical in a journalistic sense because while it exposes state/militia injustices, the remains of the victims should not be blown up in this way just for awareness and exposure. A black and white filter, or censors/pixels should at least be applied to any and all public photos as respect to the loved ones of the victims and the victims themselves.
