“What is news? by Scott Kleinberg
Chicago Tribune social media editor

at https://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyles/chi-social-media-what-is-news-20140502-story.html

“Why is this news??? @chicagotribune: Prince William and friends munched on nachos during O’Hare layover

— kevkaz (@kevkaz) May 2, 2014
“News. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

“Yes, someone tweeted a variation of the famous line from “The Princess Bride” at us recently. And a few weeks ago. And a bunch of times before that.

“We get it. You think that story we shared via social media and posted on our website is ridiculous, stupid and far from newsworthy. And we hear you, and we appreciate your opinion. But that’s not going to stop us from sharing it.

“News is not always serious. We’re well aware of the big stories, and our reporters work tirelessly to track down details. But just because we throw in something that makes you #facepalm or LMAO doesn’t mean we’ve lost sight of the big picture.

“Your perspective might change if you saw the process unfold for yourselves. We think ahead about your possible reaction. We even laugh about it. We take ourselves seriously, but never too seriously. Earlier, when we posted about Prince William munching on nachos and wings during a layover at O’Hare, we knew we’d hear snarky comments in response.

” “Why is this news?”

” “This is news?”

“And other words we can’t print here.

“We can take it. But we want you to understand why we post what we post and why we share what we share.

“Your definition of news is different from ours, just as your definition is different from the person sitting next to you. For us, news is anything popular or trending or being talked about. It’s often serious, but not always. It’s often bad but sometimes good.

“And sometimes, it’s just plain silly. Or not helpful.

“In the social media age, you see a lot of things that are nonsensical. You read things that “shock” and “restore your faith in humanity.” You’re often tricked and enticed to click. In our case, we strive to tell you what you need to know up front, but we don’t shy away from the obscure.

“Let’s use the Prince William nacho story as the example. If he munched on nachos at an airport in Tennessee, we wouldn’t report on it. Who cares? It happened in Tennessee. Bring him to Chicago and you’ve got something different.

“Celebrities are often blasted as not newsworthy. You may not care, but it matters for the people who do. If we ignore these stories, someone will complain. It’s impossible to please everyone. When we post stories about bicyclists, the people without bikes tell us they don’t care and they ask us to post real news. When we post a story about price hikes on the Tollway, non-drivers tell us they don’t care and ask us to post real news.

“And so it goes. For what it’s worth, I played the Prince William tweet a little differently than @chicagotribune. It went more straight. I went with “nacho ORD-inary layover.” One person even favorited it, so all is not lost.

“Part of my job as social media editor is to spot trends. It is also to inform and engage. And this job has helped me develop a really thick skin. I never take your tweets personally, even when they are. If you insult our choices and tell us in a not-so-nice way, I won’t ignore or block you. I’ll try to give you an honest and heartfelt answer. And I’ll probably send you a link to this column.

“So by all means say what’s on your mind, but at the same time please understand there’s a method to our madness.

“Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go. We hear Rob Ford is in Chicago. #YesItReallyIsNews ”

Experience shows that those who fail to attend the orientation fail to be aware of the requirements and class policies, fail to get their topics for reporting (for 30 points) and end up DISRUPTING THE CLASS with noisy cellphones, noisy inquiries, and abrupt behavior in trying to get out of the classroom to comply with the requirements.
Students will always be held responsible for whatever they miss as a consequence of their being late or absent, and are requested not to harangue the handling faculty to be given special treatment by way of a “personalized briefing”, or updates, or to get topics.
The class record and class scorecards of this class are electronic (with one print copy as final backup).

The avatar is your digital public photo. For this class, do not submit an image of a cartoon character or a computer-generated image unless you want to be considered a winged creature in class. Those who do not have these will be asked to show or perform their own original composition in class as a description of themselves.
There are several ways of producing your public profile:
1.Thru your own public site (thru free sites such as FB, Twitter, tumblr, wordpress, blogspot, etc)
2.or thru Gravatar (a free app/site),
3.or thru about.com (another free site/app)

    Assignment:

Picture exclusive: Prince Philip ‘very shocked and shaken’ after car crash near Sandringham Estate
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2019/01/17/prince-philip-car-crash-near-sandringham/amp/

This is news because it hits several of the traditional news values namely:
    1. Prominence – the article features an accident Prince Philip was involved in.
    2. Timeliness – the article was released soon after the accident took place.
    3. Proximity – the article was released by a news agency in United Kingdom thus the issue is close to its audience. (Of course, this news value is not applicable for readers outside the UK)

To put it simply, news is information that the public wants and/or needs to know. It is also information that may affect their daily lives.

  2. PUBLIC PROFILE

    ASSIGNMENT
After receiving a sonogram from her pregnancy checkup, Marian Rivera shares that the second child she is expecting looks like her husband, Dingdong Dantes. Marian jokes that she feels outcasted again because her firstborn, Zia, also looked like Dingdong when Zia was smaller. Marian then describes her second child as a shy type, who kept on hiding during the ultrasound, and eventually adds that the child may also be mischievous like her.

This article released by GMA News Online last January 17 is considered news because even though the content does not pose a threat to public safety, it definitely still sparks interest and emotional reactions to selected readers, especially the ones who love reading entertainment news (human interest). Marian and Dingdong both have a huge fan base because they are both prominent figures in the entertainment industry (prominence). Due to this, their fans would love to hear updates about the developments in their family life because they have already invested in them emotionally.

In a nutshell, news is fresh information that elicits emotion and sparks discussion. News affects the way we perceive the world and ultimately, the way we act.

  3. News Title: Barbie Forteza, Jak Roberto have a special Christmas gift exchange

    https://www.gmanetwork.com/entertainment/celebritylife/news/46978/barbie-forteza-jak-roberto-have-a-special-christmas-gift-exchange/story

According to the dictionary, a news is a newly received or a noteworthy information about a recent event, but to the article written on this website, our definition of news varies.

Here in my example, we have Showbiz News about Barbie Forteza’s and Jak Roberto’s renunciation of their previous declaration that they will not exchange gifts on Christmas day.

The previous report about the celebrity couple mentioned that each of them will spend quality time with each of their families on Christmas, and on the following day, they will at Barbie’s place for dessert, which is in Biñan, Laguna.

The two celebrities are public figures at the GMA Network.

What made this newsworthy for the network is the fact that many fans are out there waiting for updates about their idols. Most netizens find it silly that articles like this are still written and published, but maybe it’s because they are targeting a specific audience. Kudos to GMA, they didn’t have to exert a lot of effort in spreading the news, because people found it very funny but still decided to share it because of its “pointlessness.” In the end, the network won without really insinuating the news to the public’s face.

    https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/balitambayan/chikamuna/678684/barbie-forteza-at-jak-roberto-di-raw-mag-e-exchange-gift-ngayong-pasko/story/

This news posted last December 18, 2017 by GMA News was about Jak Roberto and Barbie Forteza’s plans for their Christmas and their agreement to not give in to exchange gifts. Is this news? Technically, yes. Because it concerns well known people and although it may not appeal to all, some people do care about the couple’s whereabouts. No the topic will not contribute to the political situation of our country, but it is noteworthy to some readers.

News must contain information that are up-to-date, relevant, noteworthy, and concerns sectors from our population.

  5. Taken from GMA News Online, with the tagline ‘Your News Authority,’ an article titled ‘Nico Bolzico dishes out relationship secrets he and wife Solenn Heussaff live by,’ was posted on January 13, 2019. The article talked about how Nico Bolzico and Solenn Heussaff spent the holidays apart, celebrating Christmas and New Year with their respective families (so Nico Bolzico was in Argentina). In the article, Nico Bolzico gave out relationship advice, stating that partners should give each other space and let each other fly instead of cutting their wings.

I believe this to be news. Learning from my Comm 140 class the previous semester, there are several facets to consider which is news-worthy and which is not. If it is timely, if there are conflicts or norm violations, if it involves a large number of people, or if the subject itself is big in quantity, if there is interest in particular people (like celebrities), if there is local relevance, if there is a recurring theme, and even considering if it is a feasible story to make, then it is news-worthy. This news article might seem unimportant in our personal lives, but I believe it ticks off some of the boxes which made it proceed to GMA News Online.

First of all, it IS timely. The holidays has just passed, and viewers have just come from celebrations of Christmas and New Year, so a post like this could be relatable in current time. Within the article they also mentioned something which could count as a ‘norm violation.’ A husband and a wife spending the holidays apart? In our culture, families celebrate the holidays together, and yet we see a married couple deciding to spend three weeks apart from each other during this very period. The subject of the article itself is about two prominent figures within the country; actress and model Solenn Heussaff, and her agricultural-business owner turned celebrity Nico Bolzico, so this article has interest in particular people indeed. Viewers within the Philippines may see this as somehow relevant, as these are figures they see everyday in their televisions, and on billboards on their commute home. An inside-peek at their idols’ marital lives.

Although the article itself seems to be a bit shallow compared to other news posted, I still consider it as news. Granted, it would be nicer to have more content that focus on deeper issues of the country, and this country has A LOT of issues, but still, we live in a very neoliberal world, where glamourized people are used to promote a certain lifestyle that pushes people to buy and BUY AND BUY, and to not notice the horrors happening to the streets of the real world. It entertains us into submission, but technically speaking, using news values I learned from the previous semester, I believe it is still news. Although, personally, I believe the existence of this article is certainly a reflection of our country right now, and the escapist tendencies we take to in order to alleviate the daily stresses we encounter.

    J101 First Assignment

“Julia Barretto on why she doesn’t wear bra: ‘Walang kakapitan’”

    https://entertainment.inquirer.net/313984/julia-barretto-on-why-she-doesnt-wear-bra-walang-kakapitan#ixzz5cwBcEeQy

On January 16, 2015, the Inquirer reported on their entertainment site that on January 15, 2019, Julia Barretto admitted to Boy Abunda thay she prefers wearing nipple tape over bras, jokingly stating that bras have nothing to cling to on her body.

This article is news based on the following elements of news and newsworthiness:

Prominence: Julia Barretto is a famous actress who is important to many people. What goes on with her life is something of interest, not only for her thousands of fans, but also for citizens who know of her and watch and judge her movements from a distance.
Proximity: Julia’s fame is here in the Philippines and is loved by many Filipinos, and people care about what happens to their Filipino actress. Should this have been printed in a different country, it might not have been newsworthy since people won’t care much.
Timeliness: this article was published only the morning after Julia’s interview. The timing of the article was quick and fresh.
Oddity: As a conservative country, it is not a huge trend in the Philippines to wear nipple tape. Older generations would frown upon not wearing bras, so it is odd to hear that a famous young girl refuses to wear them.

“News” is a true to life story that contains information that is relevant to its audience, may it be because it affects the community or because it interests them.

    Assignment:

According to an article released by Philippine Star (https://www.philstar.com/entertainment/2019/01/15/1885316/opm-stars-moira-dela-torre-jason-marvin-hernandez-tie-knot), dated Jan. 15, 2019, #AngTagpuan2019, also known as the wedding of Kapamilya singer Moira Dela Torre and singer-songwriter Jason Marvin Hernandez, was held last Monday. Many celebrity guests were in attendance, namely, Sam Milby, John Prats, Isabel Oli, Gab Valenciano, Erik Santos, Regina Velasquez, Ogie Alcasid. The word, “Tagpuan”, holds meaning to Moira, for it is the title of one of her hit songs.

News is defined as noteworthy information, especially about a recent or important event/person.

Why is Moira’s wedding considered news?
    (1) Human interest – The news about the wedding may not concern the daily lives of Filipino citizens or have no relation to social issues, but, people hold interest because of Moira’s appeal to her following. Filipinos love romance, hence Moira’s music sells.
    (2) Prominence – Moira being a Kapamilya artist is truly a big factor. She is known for her soothing voice, that she uses to sing love songs, which she leveraged on to rise to fame. Also, many celebrities attended the event.
    (3) Oddity – Jason promised to Moira’s father, to save the couple’s first kiss for their wedding, despite having a civil ceremony last January 8. So it was only at their church wedding, that they had their first kiss.

    J101 First Assignment

Published yesterday, January 17, 2019, the GMA News Online article written by Jannielyn Anne Bigtas entitled “Zia: ‘I want to see myself on TV’; Will Mommy Marian let her join showbiz?” talks about Zia Dantes’ (the most famous Kapuso loveteam and real-life wedded stars Marian Rivera-Dantes and Dingdong Dantes’ first-born daughter) expression to her mom of her desire to join the showbiz scene. Marian addressed this by saying that she and her husband, Dingdong Dantes, will fully support their child in whatever she desires so long as she finishes her studies first. The article also talks about Zia’s backstage experiences in her mother’s Sunday noontime show named “Sunday Pinasaya”, her awareness of the acting nature of her parents’ jobs, her first television commercial and how the talent fee for such has been stored in a bank for Zia to acquire once she turns 18. Is this news? Yes, this article contains news. This is because it involves famous people (namely Marian Rivera-Dantes, a famous GMA Actress, and her daughter, Zia Dantes), making it fall under the news element known as prominence, or the news value called elite people (Galtung & Ruge, 1973). Another is that the story piques human interest (which can be considered under the news value of personalisation because both are Filipinos and GMA News caters to Filipinos) in a light way as it talks about the innocent and loving relationship between a mother and her child, contributing to the balance of good or light news to the bad or heavy ones and thus following the news value of balance (Galtung & Ruge, 1973). Familiarity could also be a news value that is present in the news story, as both Marian and Zia are famous Filipinos that are familiar to most of the Philippine population. Stories about Marian and Zia will remain and continue to be news as the moment Zia was conceived, the girl has been put under the limelight; media outlets are quick to create news stories about her. This reason follows the news value of continuity, as proposed by Galtung & Ruge in 1973, which states that an event that has been published or produced into news will likely remain and be classified as news because of its familiarity, the event in this case being Marian and Zia’s relationship as mother and daughter. In my definition, news is or can be any factual story that piques human interest, no matter the number of audience or readers, so long as it follows any (if not most) of the news values (as proposed by Galtung & Ruge, 1973): immediacy, familiarity, amplitude, frequency, unambiguity, predictability, surprise, continuity, elite nations/people, personalisation, negativity, and balance.

Angelica Panganiban tweets about finally loving again, feeling hurt
    Posted on January 16, 2019
    https://news.abs-cbn.com/entertainment/01/16/19/angelica-panganiban-tweets-about-finally-loving-again-feeling-hurt

Recently, Angelica Panganiban took to twitter her sentiments about loving again and feeling hurt without disclosing any identity of whom the series of tweets are directed to. This is presumed to be connected to her instagram post a week prior about cutting ties with her ex-boyfriend and co-star, Carlo Aquino, whom she was affectionate towards in recent months.

    Now, is this news? Absolutely.

There are several news values in journalism namely timeliness, impact, prominence, oddity, relevance, proximity, and conflict. This type of news falls under prominence since it involves a public figure, which in this case is a well-known local celebrity. Angelica Panganiban has been in the entertainment scene since 1992, making her a household name in the showbiz industry. Hence, making her a news-worthy figure.

Prominence news balances the mood and emotion from the other types of news which are perceived as serious or worth the national attention. News goes beyond the definition of information of current events since it has a wide variations of values to consider.

News Title: Kris Aquino apologizes after conversation with Nicko Falcis surfaced online

    https://entertainment.inquirer.net/313980/kris-aquino-apologizes-after-conversation-with-nicko-falcis-surfaced-online

An audio recording of Aquino and Falcis’ conversation recently surfaced on social media. After it became viral, showbiz personality Kris Aquino apologized through Facebook livestream on January 16, 2019. Aquino said that the audio recording was edited.

Now, the question is, is this News? Yes.

This is News because I saw the prominence in this article where a well-known person has a stronger news angle than something that the audience isn’t familiar with. Since Kris Aquino is Queen of All Media and this issue is about money, it became viral. I also saw the timeliness. It also contribute to the political situation of our country because the subject of this news mentioned some laws.

For me, News is presentation of new information where it answered the 5W’s and H that will help the readers to understand what it is all about.

    https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/showbiz/showbizabroad/681584/r-amp-b-star-alicia-keys-to-host-2019-grammy-awards/story/

Alicia Keys, a well-known American R&B singer, is set to host the Grammy Awards this February 10. This choice follows the the harsh criticism received by the Recording Academy last year, where people called out the lack of diversity among the Grammy Awards’ top distinctions.

I think this article is news. The news is timely, as the Grammy Awards are only a month away. The article also features a prominent figure such as Alicia Keys, who is well-known around the world, as well as the Grammy Awards, a highly-anticipated event. It also features the criticism received by the Recording Academy (the organizers of the Grammy Awards) from the public. It is also a big change from the previous years, since the previous two Grammy Awards were hosted by James Cordon. The news is also related to large issue of the lack of diversity in the United States.

News is a timely and relevant piece of information which is of interest to its audience.

Liza Soberano lands in Most Beautiful Faces Hall of Fame

    http://cnnphilippines.com/entertainment/2018/12/30/liza-soberano-most-beautiful-faces-hall-of-fame.html

In the article, it is stated that Liza Soberano obtained the fourth place in “The 100 Most Beautiful Faces of 2018″ list of TC Candler’s Independent Critics Organization. It was also her fourth time to enter the list, although she dropped three places from the first place in 2017.

This article can be considered as ‘news’, given that it satisfies several news values.

First is prominence. Liza Soberano is a well-known actress from ABS-CBN. She has tons of supporters who watch her shows and movies, and who follow her progress in her career.

Next news value evident in the article is proximity. Considering that ABS-CBN is watched by a huge number of Filipinos, and that the actress lives and works in the Philippines, it can be said that the news is in proximity with the readers, the Filipinos.

The third news value is timeliness. The news can be considered as timely, given that the article informing its readers of the 100 Most Beautiful Faces of 2018 and that the article was released last December 30, 2018, nearing the end of 2018.

Lastly, oddity is present in the article. Since the list of the Most Beautiful Faces of 2018 has become a well-known phenomenon and has been published since 1990, the fact that Soberano placed fourth and has placed for four times in the list is a big and uncommon feat.

    DEFINITION OF NEWS:
News can be considered as information provided to the public that seeks to enlighten, guide, and inform them in their decision-making, whether in their everday lives or in a national level.

This is not considered news but a blog. It does not hold any significant event or information that the public is ought to know.

In this article it was stated how the couple agreed not to exchange gifts on Christmas but eventually did. Attached in the article was a twitter video of them giving each other a kiss on the cheek as their “exchange gift” to one another. Celebrities have this hold over the public because viewers find their lives entertaining. Stories like this should be posted in blog sites not news sites. While celebrity journalism is important to keep your viewers, it is vital that we choose certain stories that has substance and not banal. More often than not, this diverts our attention from the real world, the real happenings around our country, the political and social issues.

News has always been a combination of seriousness and entertaining. In this article, it would have been more significant if it was about the celebrities going on a trip in the country. That would have supplied information about tourist places in the Philippines that could have been substantial for the public.

When it comes to news, we should consider its timeliness, impact, significance, proximity, and trend, and the subject matter of the article does not fall on any of those. Trivial mundane activities of celebrities does not concern the society, much less the country.

News is a presentation of a significant report or any impactful recent event that is announced or disseminated to the public.

The public becomes more interested about the lives of famous personalities than private/normal people.

Prominence news balances the mood and emotion from the other types of news which are perceived as serious or worth the national attention. News goes beyond the definition of information of current events since it has a wide variations of values for it to be considered as news-worthy.

    https://entertainment.inquirer.net/311099/p2fb-look-ellen-adarna-bonds-with-family-for-christmas-but-wheres-john-lloyd-cruz

“Ellen Adarna and her family had a wonderful Christmas, as they gathered for a reunion just in time for the holidays.

The actress, who is still shying away from the limelight, was present in her family’s holiday reunion, which apparently took place in Ayala Alabang Village, Muntinlupa City. This was seen in Instagram photos posted by her relative Mia on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24.” – Katrina Hallare, Philippine Inquirer

This is a news because it has the following elements: timeliness, prominence, and proximity. For timeliness, the article was written right after Christmas. For prominence, the article is about Ellen Adarna, a famous celebrity here in the country. This is related to the last element, proximity. Because she is an actress here in the Philippines, Filipinos are the audience of this news, which then makes it newsworthy for it is published here.

A news is a recent and relevant story that contains facts, interviews, or statistics. It interests and informs the audience of the whats, whys, whos, whens, wheres, and hows of a particular happening.

  18. Article : https://entertainment.inquirer.net/314379/is-sarah-geronimo-going-back-to-school

Being hailed as a "pop superstar", Sarah Geronimo is definitely a prominent figure in the Philippines. A lot of people are following her, and wanting to be her. This is one factors that makes it a news article.

Imagine a woman sparkling with pizzazz and wealth pursuing education instead of just continuing to be a shining artist. That creates drama - and definitely touches the heart of millions of Filipino people!

Despite it being a news article, I deem it to be lacking of information. Why does Sarah Geronimo suddenly want to pursue education again? The perpetual mention of Senator Sonny Angara also makes me wonder if there is a hidden agenda behind this post news. This news is not just about Sarah, it is about a senator beautifying his name with his support for the famous singer.

For me, news is a selective representation of reality. Reality is a complex thing and cannot be boxed, and news has this power to present one version of "truth" to the world.
