How to measure heart rate at rest

   (if you’re preparing to run)  How to measure heart rate at rest :

  “According to the Harvard Medical School Special Health Report Diseases of the Heart, it’s easy to check your pulse using just your fingers, either at the wrist or the side of the neck.
“At the wrist, lightly press the index and middle fingers of one hand on the opposite wrist, just below the base of the thumb.
“At the neck, lightly press the side of the neck, just below your jawbone.
Count the number of beats in 15 seconds, and multiply by four. That’s your heart rate.
“To get the most accurate reading, you may want to repeat a few times and use the average of the three values. For a resting heart rate measurement, you should also follow these steps:
“Do not measure your heart rate within one to two hours after exercise or a stressful event. Your heart rate can stay elevated after strenuous activities.
“Wait an hour after consuming caffeine, which can cause heart palpitations and make your heart rate rise.
“Do not take the reading after you have been sitting or standing for a long period, which can affect your heart rate.”

     As a layperson: took  heart rate at rest an hour ago (before being fully awake)   …

   … because…

   preparing for a full run in a few — haven’t ran in three months  … just checking heart rate manually … to make sure i won’t keel over when  making sudden spurts (if you haven’t ran in a long time, it might be a good idea to check your heart rate)

      … can’t find pulse … good … weak pulse at rest is good — (but Harvard Medical says not necessarily)

   (still half-asleep : turned in early and  got seven straight hours of natural sleep 😴 )

   found pulse — in the soft spot above the right collarbone, using fingertips pressed hard … also found it  below the jawline.

     Press your pulse for a few seconds until you have familiarized yourself with its “regularity”…

   Then,  use the digital clock timer of your mobile phone, set it to one minute. Then,  press your pulse again to familiarize yourself with the beat. 

   With your other hand (of course), tap “start” on your digital timer,  then close your eyes and make a count for each pulse (i open one eye every 15 beats to check the timer).

   60 at first set (60 beats per minute.) The second was 59 bpm.
