Quote “In an online article posted in the Inquirer’s website (“DoJ chief sees links between Makati standoff, Friday rallies” Last updated 04:14pm, Mla time, 11/29/2007), reporter Lina Dalangin-Fernandez wrote a story regarding allegations of Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez on Thursday (November 29, 2007) that there is a link between the standoff in Makati City between government forces and a group led by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, and the planned mobilization Friday by several anti-Arroyo groups.

Quote “However, she failed to get the view of the groups seen by the DoJ chief as sympathizers of Sen. Trillanes’ cause. In this case, she violated the provision obliging journalists to recognize their duty to air the other side; the story is not balanced after all. She should have interviewed at least some representatives of these groups to comment on the remarks given by the DoJ chief.” End of quote. November 30, 2007, 10:14 amNov 30, 10:16 AM —

Quote “On Nov. 22, 2007, the Philippine daily Inquirer carried the banner story entitled “Magnate tied to cash gifts” by Gil C. Cabacungan, Jr. The story is about the possible involvement of businessman Reghis M. Romero in the distribution of cash gifts to governors last month. Allegedly, the said move was Malacañang’s way of getting support for the weak impeachment complaint filed against PGMA.

Quote “The said banner story is an example of good journalism because it was balanced. It upheld the first provision in the Philippine Journalist’s Code of Ethics, which states: “I shall scrupulously report and interpret the news, taking care not to suppress essential facts nor to distort the truth by omission or improper emphasis. I recognize the duty to air the other side and the duty to correct substantive errors promptly.”

Quote “The story gave both sides of the story. There was an interview wit Sen. Panfilo Lacson, the one making the allegation, and a statement from Romero, who denied the allegation. Other senators, such as Sen. Joker Arroyo and Sen. Jamby Madrigal, were also interviewed about their comments on the issue. This is important so the readers can see other perspectives in looking at the issue. Also, the reader was given context regarding the distribution of cash gifts last October. This helped the reader understand what the issue is all about. No essential details were omitted.” Closed-quote. Nov 30, 9:22 PM — [

Quote” Last November 23, Philippine Daily Inquirer published ‘Writing dirty wins international award for PDI reporter’ and ‘Inquirer exhibits Cannes Lions best Creative Minds’ in their front page. The two stories were written by Elza Victoria and Marlet D. Salazar respectively.

quote “Instead of placing important news at the front page, the Inquirer opted to publish these socially irrelevant articles that are unworthy to be highlighted. The purpose of these articles is to boost Inquirer’s image to its readers. In addition, the country’s leading broadsheet allowed their business interests and biases to influence them in their news-reporting. The newspaper should have placed these stories, which contain minimal news values, in the latter pages.” Closed-quote.Nov 27, 11:49 PM —
