Quote” Last November 23, Philippine Daily Inquirer published ‘Writing dirty wins international award for PDI reporter’ and ‘Inquirer exhibits Cannes Lions best Creative Minds’ in their front page. The two stories were written by Elza Victoria and Marlet D. Salazar respectively.

quote “Instead of placing important news at the front page, the Inquirer opted to publish these socially irrelevant articles that are unworthy to be highlighted. The purpose of these articles is to boost Inquirer’s image to its readers. In addition, the country’s leading broadsheet allowed their business interests and biases to influence them in their news-reporting. The newspaper should have placed these stories, which contain minimal news values, in the latter pages.” Closed-quote.Nov 27, 11:49 PM —

Posted by Student no. 7 blog entry no.1 . Unedited by blog admin       Quote ““Villar to lead centennial celebration of NP; book launching, reunion set” from the November 26, 2007 issue of the Manila Bulletin is a single-sourced story because it only aired the side of Senate President Manuel Villar. The code of professional and ethical conduct of the Philippine Press Institute states that single-sourced stories must be avoided. There should have been a second, third or more sources. An official from the Liberal Party could have been interviewed to make it fair and balanced.

Quote “Moreover, the article is a press release and not news worthy to be in the front page. It is about the 100th anniversary celebration of the Nacionalista Party, the significance of the book “Building the Nation: First 100 years, Nacionalista Party 1907-2007” by Carmelo and Joyce Crisanto, Villar’s “Sipag at Tiyaga” program and the Centenial gift of P100,000 that NP will be giving out. This article was placed beside “Six of 7 dead typhoon victims drown in flood,” a story about the victims of typhoon “Mina.” The latter story should have been given more emphasis because of its social relevance. However, due to the biases of the newspaper and its profit-driven and power-driven motives, the two articles were treated equally significant.”closed-quote. Nov 27, 12:38 PM —
