Feb. 18 Media Monitor (fair, foolish, in a fix) can be posted here. The Office of the Chancellor has suspended classes 4pm onwards, Feb. 18 in order to allow members of the U.P. community to attend the 2014 U.P. Diliman Convocation.
Feb. 25 is a holiday. Therefore, the 3rd quarterly test will be held on March 4 instead.
Weekly media monitor continues with a chance for one bonus before the test. (photo by Myra Lambino, Hollywood Walk of the Stars)

The link above shows a tweet of for the official twitter account of MMDA which is . One can notice that there is a blue check encircled besides the twitter account of MMDA which means that this account is real. On the other hand, uses the image of a fictional character from the known telenovela “Marimar”. Definitely this has nothing to do with either the fictional character or the actress herself. It is believed by netizens that is an account made by a student from FEU or Far Eastern University) in the Philippines. One of the feature characteristics of the made-up account is that “Senyora” is a demanding woman, who calls everyone her “alipin” ( slave). The account is fond of tweeting jokes and insults some are related to government issues.
As seen on the link, tweeted to : “ Ola , @MMDA what is the best way from Makati to Hacienda”. The @MMDA replied : “ Saan po hacienda?”
Note- referes “Hacienda” as her home ( since senyora is building an image , she is a wealthy woman who owns a big Hacienda) . I believe that this tweet is an example of “TROLLING (saying something irrelevant) . Why ? Here are my reasons. First- obviously the official twitter account of MMDA is not made just to entertain “troll” tweets.. Second- I believe that is not that ignorant to know that the account that he/she is tweeting to is the official account of MMDA. Third- another factor to consider is that this the medium is using is a social media. Once it is posted, he/she may delete it but once someone has Retweeted or screen shot it, it will definitely pull up an image that MDDA is “ignorant’ or could be a subject of laughter.

Filipino film highlights dangerous power of social media

The article sheds light on a Filipino film centred on relationships and social media in the Philippine context as the film is currently making waves in Berlin as it makes its rounds on the international film fest tours. The description of the film’s message is apt and non-judgemental of content. The brief summary of the synopsis doesn’t give away any major spoilers, but allows the audience to peer into the film’s theory on oppressive dependence on social media amongst the Filipino youth, and how the film’s basis (a murder-suicide in a public shopping mall in 2011) highlights several key problems in the Philippines including gender equality, poverty, and an over-dependence on social media. The article makes no direct claims about the current situation in the Philippines, and correctly uses the obvious interpretation delivered by the film. The reporter also made us of quotations taken directly from the film’s director and cast members who had to undergo extensive character research through psychological training and immersion to help build up the case to support the film’s rationale and call to action. The article is well-written, doesn’t rely on flowery prose to draw out the message in a work of fiction (that is based on recent, non-fictional social scenarios in the Philippines), uses quotations taken from verifiable sources and doesn’t lead the audience to think either which way about the film while still delivering a summary of the film’s message to the world audience along with space given to the audience to understand the film’s impact on its viewers, both locally in the Philippines and internationally.

I have seen two articles that have caused a ruckus over Facebook- people getting mad at Henares and people sending condolences for the death of the flappy bird creator. However, these two articles come from web sites that write satire articles. Though the articles were written in a manner a news would’ve been, people usually get emotional and react too easily to these kinds of articles, forgetting to check the links and the validity of the website.
It was even clearly stated at Sowhatsnews.blogspot.com that it was a “a SATIRICAL & FICTIONAL news website. Our aim is to inject humor into everyday news to provide respite to readers who have grown weary with mainstream news organization’s partisan, biased and depressing way of presenting the news.”. This note was placed beside the article about Henares being curious of the skater’s family is paying the right amount of taxes. it is almost impossible not to see that the article was a satire.
It is very important for internet users to be responsible in what they post and re-post. We should not be gullible enough to believe easily in whatever we read or see online. Instead, people should double check the source and learn to probe instead of joining the band wagon of reactors online.

The link above is a twitter page of a filipino and i find his page flooded with unnecessary and unworthy posts. In his page he also uses the picture of star actor daniel padilla and his posts contain information that is offending to other Filipinos. As i was browsing through previous comments on pictures and people reposting and editing his tweets, people were also behaving in a very rude manner and that they use vulgar language to comment on his posts and it pissed him off too.
It is important to be careful about what one posts on social networking sites because rude comments and misbehaving improperly over these sites reflect back to the author of the posts. It also becomes annoying when people flood twitter and other networking sites with posts just to insult people. Social media users often than not also become affected by rude behavior and would comment back to trigger “hate posts” against other users.

The article above was written by Alaina Scott, a business staff of thebusiness.com. In her article, she talked about social media sites and their terms of service. Provided for are the provisions what ought to be done and what not to be done.
One of the provisions written which affected me greatly was on this:
“Companies are in violation if they require the user to share a photo to win a prize or to be entered to win a prize.”
I remember very well sharing a Keds’ post so I could win a pair. Little did I know, the company was actually making do something illegal. But who’s fault is it?
Mine. Because I failed to read the terms of service. I was ignorant.
Because of assuming anonymity, free for all and nothing will be lost if I share it… I fell into the trick. Facebook has been using companies to their advantage. Thats a social media and a new media issue.
Its basically just like signing papers, know the terms and agreements and stay away from trouble. Ignoring privacy policy is our weakness but its also a matter of whether or not we have been responsible enough of our actions and the consequences that may arise.

In a segment of last Sunday’s episode of “Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho,” a gay hairdresser’s “street dancing” gimmick wherein he would shake his hips in the middle of busy streets and literally stop traffic to climb on top of vehicles and dance, was shown. As the video was rolling Jessica made it a point to warn viewers not to copy the act.
This is good practice because what the gay hairdresser demonstrator on television was a potentially dangerous stunt and should not be characterised as just an enjoyable act.
(I was not able to find a video of this segment as no one had uploaded it online yet, and would have taken a picture but I did not have a camera handy at the time.)

The article below deals about a facebook trolling that turned into a heated commenting, something personal.. even if they have not met in real life.
Eventually, this virtual confrontation full of accusations, senseless attacks, online aggression yet unprovoked turned a real live one. For others, it was entertainment. But it was cyberbullying at the start which became a face to face serious fight.
This experience made quite an impact to the person. Attacking her personal life for the purpose of the other person’s entertainment isnt the right thing to do, especially in social media.
