Good day, Ma’am! Here’s my media monitor for this week.

    [ARTICLE: http://www.philstar.com/metro/2014/09/21/1371412/actress-mom-killed-own-home%5D

The article published by The Philippine Star is an example of a fair and accurate report. It gave important details such as the name of the victim, the place where the incident occurred, and the possible motives of the crime, among others. Another good thing about this report is that the sources were identified.

For me it was okay that the headline went like “Actress’ mom killed in own home” because the actress, pertaining to Cherry Pie Picache, was the one who first saw the victim lifeless.

Since it’s a crime report, details as to how the victim was killed was written in a way that it would not encourage other people to commit the crime as stated in the KBP Code of Ethics for the Broadcast Media. This is important because people might break in to other people’s houses or bad elements may go as far as killing others if ever details regarding this had been divulged.

  2. The bench underwear fashion show was the talk of the town this weekend. Photos of the famous celebrities stripped down to their undies went viral on the internet.

Even Rappler posted an article about the “best GIF celebrity performances”. At first, this made me raise an eyebrow because Rappler? Posting such an article? With the  description “Ellen Adarna gets undressed, a girl-on-girl kiss, an on-stage makeout, Jake Cuenca’s butt, and other highlights in gifs and pictures” Even their monitor that tracks readers’ feelings for the subject showed that the readers “don’t care about the article” with their phrases like “Martin del Rosario slipping his hand down his brief”

Although I didn’t think it was appropriate for Rappler to post such an article with lines of showcasing “Jake Cuenca’s butt”, it makes it a dilemma for me because it was a little disappointing for Rappler to release this article; but then again, they did correctly label it as Entertainment news.  They also posted a warning in the article “WARNING: Some of these photos are not safe for work. The show did not allow entry to those under 18 years old.” which I guess somehow makes it more acceptable.

  3. Good day, ma’am. Here is my media monitor for this week:

Yesterday, I watched ABS-CBN News Channel’s (ANC) late night news program, The World Tonight. It is a 30-minute nightly news program every 10pm.

For its weekday (Monday-Friday) newscast, it is anchored by veteran broadcaster Tina Monzon-Palma. At the same time, the news program has an opinion-editorial portion towards the end of the newscast. The op-ed portion is entitled Teditorial, named after its ‘anchor,’ Teddy Locsin, Jr., former presidential speechwriter to then President Cory Aquino, and former Makati Representative.

The news program’s ‘flow’ or set-up is very commendable, since it follows the ethical provision that there should be a distinction between news and opinion or commentary because of two factors: first, by strategically placing the op-ed portion after all the news stories have been delivered by the main anchor; and second, by assigning different anchors for the newscast (Monzon-Palma) and opinion-editorial (Locsin), respectively.

  4. Hi Ma’am. Here’s my media monitor for Sept.16-23,2014.

A crime report showed at Interaksyon Tv5 was entitled “Lalaking nasawi raw sa pag-ibig, nangagat sa bar.” This was a news story about a man who bit the manager of the bar without any reason. Of course, the expected action is for the manager to file a complaint against this man and so it happened.

One ethical standard for a journalist is to ‘make certain that headlines do not misrepresent. They should not oversimplify or highlight incidents out of context.’ Here, I found the headline very misleading. As I watch the news report, the police mention that the attack was caused by being too drunk. The alleged man also admitted that he was able to that because he was under the influence of alcohol. The reason the man bit manager of the bar because of being heart broken was given by his friend who too, was drunk during the time of interview.

Here’s the link for the said news report.
