“xxxRappler’s news articles in the previous week xxx a news article about the growth of ISIS as the world’s wealthiest terrorist organizations. The news itself was well-written and I am well aware that it is written in a way that condemns terrorism; that I can attribute to the fifth news filter in the propaganda model written by Chomsky and Herman (It used to be anti-communism since their book was published at the time of the cold war).
“Although the article itself was not particularly disturbing, the picture that was a part of it was. From what I saw and because of the angle of the shot, there were two people being killed execution style at pointblank range with an AK-47 and it looks as if one of their throats have been slit prior to the gunshot because the blood was flowing from one of the victim’s throats. This picture was uploaded by ISIS on their “official twitter account” according to Rappler.
[blog admin’s note: photo below rightclicked from darienbas’s site as rightclicked from rappler, cropped heavily — i cropped half the photo or more than half—the top portion and the right portion. as stressed in class three months ago, if it were up to me i would not give any kind of news coverage to the summary executions perpetrated by terrorists and would instead feature  the selfless men and women who ventured to these areas to help the displaced or to write stories on an under-reported region at the cost of their own lives (or those caught in the crossfire, those who are missing, and the civilian fatalities)]

“i do not see the necessity of making this picture part of the article because it is very disturbing. Although it was censored, one can clearly see that the man in front of the photo is either dead or dying and there’s a lot of blood. The graphic or violent nature of this photograph is disturbing and not at all necessary for news value and should not have been uploaded by Rappler in the first place.”

“October 24, 2014 xxx 96.3 Easy Rock, an FM station. I listened for more than an hour, but no OPM was played during that time. Some of the songs, which they aired, were Air Supply hits and Aerosmith melodies. For this, they violated the KBP Code of Ethics for Radio saying, “All stations shall actively promote the growth and development of Filipino music (4 OPMs every clock hour rule).”
“Furthermore, the disc jockey during that time talked about enjoying oneself once in a while. I thought it was just this regular-tip-giving-segment, but then towards the end, she mentioned a certain salon that she thanked for making her beautiful. She only made herself less credible this way. I think it is unethical because the DJ is, in a way, taking advantage of the station. Also, it is unfair for the listeners because instead of getting some advice what they got was an advertisement.”

  1. An article entitled “EXCLUSIVE | Lalaki, Nang-Molestiya ng Special Child” was released by InterAksyon.com (http://n5e.interaksyon.com/videos/DCEC36456F914B0/exclusive-lalaki-nang-molestiya-ng-special-child) yesterday. It is a story about a guy who molested a 14-year old special kid. The article included a video of its coverage on TV.

At first, when you come across its title, you just think it is another form of a hideous crime. However, as the same story was reported on Aksyon yesterday morning, the footer states that a kid was molested by a gay man; in fact, “14-year old na Lalaki, Ginahasa ng Bading” was how it was phrased. As much as I STRONGLY condemn the crime committed by the gay man to the poor child, it bothers me that it overly emphasized the suspect’s sexuality. This would utterly affect the perception of LGBT in our society.

Members of the LGBT community are fighting really hard to erase the negative perception of them in our society. I have noticed that in every article released by InterAksyon that involves gay men, their sexuality is somewhat emphasized like people who are gay are innately capable of committing crime. The least these media organizations should do is to avoid articles that contribute to the discriminating stereotypes of Filipino people against members of the LGBT community.

This news article talks about the death of the 11-year-old girl who was taken hostage by her mother’s live-in partner. The hostage taker, who did not ask for any demand but for the people not to interfere, eventually shot the girl and was killed in a police shootout.

In conflict reporting, a journalist must not interfere with negotiations between the police and the criminal. The journalist who wrote the article did not violate anything. He did not attempt to become the middleman between the policemen and the hostage-taker. He reported the facts right and maintained a fair stance on the matter. He wasn’t that visual about the gory details but he explained the situation well enough for the readers to understand the situation.

I commend the journalist for writing well and acting well on the conflict.

    Good day, Ma’am!
    Thank you!

The report above is about an 8-year-old girl who was killed and was allegedly raped in Laguna. The name of the girl was disclosed. Furthermore, her photograph was also shown. This is an outright violation to the Code of Ethics provision saying, “be cautious about identifying juvenile suspects or victims of sex crimes”.
I think the report involved a lot of footage of the mother crying for her daughter’s death. The reporter should have been “sensitive of the one affected by grief” by showing less of that.
It was good that the image of the girl’s dead body was completely blurred. However, the words of Ms. Susan Enriquez (i.e. “walang saplot, nakalublob ang mukha sa tubig”) put a gruesome picture in my mind. I understand its purpose was to describe what happened to the girl, but at the back of mind there’s a voice saying there could be a better alternative so as to give the little girl some dignity she deserves.
Being a journalist is one tough job. You have to be descriptive of the situation, but at the same time you should minimize the harm of your report.

Posted above is a link to the report about the shootout inside Cagayan de Oro subdivision. A security guard and two suspected armed robbers were killed, while another security guard was wounded during the firefight with alleged burglars. The report was factual, and the facts were first confirmed by authorities. It wasn’t sensationalized and the names of the people who died in the shootout were disclosed since these people weren’t minors. This is an example of good and ethical news reporting.
