  1. The news articles I chose were coverages on the alleged murder-suicide of a Taiwanese family from San Juan which happened last weekend, Feb 7. Police authorities found a family of five dead in their residence in San Juan on the morning of February 7, Saturday. Details on how they were found included the rooms where the bodies were, and the manner that they were found. The description of the bodies was graphic–all their heads were covered with plastic bags, four of the members (the two sons and parents) were together at the master’s bedroom while the eldest daughter was in her own room, and the parent’s feet were strangely strapped together. As of that writing, no foul play was detected and it was suspected that the family experienced financial problems which led to their demise. Based on the articles of Inquirer, GMA, and Rappler, the information regarding the alleged murder-suicide was consistent. I do think that reports did not get the detail on the ages (specifically of the daughter) correct, since the early articles indicated that she was 18 years old. In the Rappler article, it was later clarified that she was 20. As of this moment, the bodies are still undergoing autopsy, so additional details are to follow.

Given the gruesome details of the event, I think that the articles reported the news without exaggerating anything, therefore following the code of ethics in seeking truth and minimizing harm. In one Inquirer article is a photo of authorities carrying one body out of the house, but it was good that no graphic details were illustrated. The news itself was shocking due to the manner of death of the family, but I believe that the coverage of it was not sensationalized. Appropriate details were also provided in identifying the family, such that their nationality aided to the story without raising any prejudice on their race. Their names however, were disclosed, but only for purposes of identification. Another good thing of this coverage was that Rappler was able to access the perspective of one of the witnesses who was at the scene, shedding more light to the story and giving more details to what the family was like. Included in the news was her Facebook status regarding the event.

While browsing the internet, I happen to come across this news interview from A Current Affair (ACA), an Australian program. The interviewee was Corey Worthington, a 16-year old teenager who held a large-scale party while his parents were gone. It is said that 500 attendees were present and they caused trouble in the neighborhood, making Corey’s parents pay Au $20, 000 for the damages.

In the interview, the reporter, Leila McKinnon, was completely unprofessional. Her first question was, “What on earth were you thinking?” which, I believe, was inappropriate because it already sets a mood that shames the interviewee. All throughout the conversation, she was clearly pointing out that Corey’s actions were wrong and that he should apologize in public. She even commands him to take off his sunglasses before saying sorry so that people will see his sincerity. Although she may have a point and good intentions, it still deviates from the role of a reporter, which is to report the news and be unbiased, since she was already reprimanding the teenager on air like a teacher pissed with a student. Corey was indeed very rude and improper with his answers and rebuttals, but as a reporter, McKinnon should have conducted herself appropriately still and handled the situation in a professional manner.

  3. In Rated K’s Valentine Special last February 8, it showed a lot of advertorials that were obviously disguised as features in the magazine show broadcast. First, it showed a lot of products (e.g. stuffed toys, pillows, flowers, etc) and was promoting them. The show even showed some interview clips with the owners of the manufacturing company of the said products. The show even segued the theme of the episode to promoting a chocolate drink. First, they said that it is no wonder why chocolates are the people’s favorite especially during Valentine’s. Then it proceeded to telling how and what do you need to create a chocolate. After which, it stated some of the bad effects one can get by eating chocolates. There came this “healthy” chocolate drink made of onion and tomatoes.

The show has been known in (subtly) promoting different products in each of their episodes. And this one isn’t the first one. Everyone knows how powerful and influential Korina Sanchez is. They combined it with the manipulative power of mainstream media to disguise these advertisements into news features, and actually make a lot of money out of it.

This is an article form Philippine Star which is published last February 5. This is an advertisement about a Valentine chocolate that can be bought at Kitchen Elf baking and confectionery supplies, located at Vista Malls’ Evia Lifestyle Center along Daanghari, Las Piñas. Although the article detailed the steps on how to do a specific dish, we can say that it is really not it’s focus. This is because its first part is an advertisement about a specific shop’s Valentine offerings. There is an attempt from the publication to hide its real motives of advertisements by putting a recipe to justify that it is ethical.

Yet, we can see that it violates a provision from the SPJ Code of Ethics that says “Distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two. Prominently label sponsored content.” The whole article is just an advertisement of business establishments that they want us to go to this Valentines’ season/ day. Even the recipe is an advertisement because it presented its source (Recipe
by the École du Grand Chocolat Valrhona) in a manner that it seems promoting the business enterprise. In addition, it is also considered unethical because it did not put any disclaimer or label that it is a sponsored article or that it is an advertisement.

The death of a Taiwanese-Filipino family of five was all over the news recently. In any report, written or not, the importance of accuracy cannot be stressed enough. An article on Philippine Star featured the discovery of the family's bodies inside their condominium unit. According to a friend of mine who knew the daughter, Amanda Hsieh was 20 years old, not 18. If the writer did not get this simple bit of information correctly, how can the readers be sure that his article is reliable and that he, as a journalist, should be trusted? This is not the only article that got Amanda's age wrong. Philippine Daily Inquirer and Manila Bulletin also stated that she was 18.
Also, both articles from the Philippine Star and Manila Bulletin identified the mother as Roxanne Hsieh while Inquirer said that her name was Roxsanna. Which news article should be relied on? Is it just a typographical error or not? It all boils down to accuracy.
The titles of articles from different websites were also misleading. Non Alquitran's "Failing business drove family to suicide?" in the Philippine Star makes it sound like it was the whole family's decision to commit suicide when other articles state that it was the parents' decision to "take their lives and to bring along their three children."

BANDILA, ABS-CBN NEWS, PUBLISHED ON YOUTUBE ON FEB. 6, 2015
Title: What ties bind Aquino, Purisima?

    Comments:
    1) In as much as the subject matter is related to relevant affairs (Fallen 44), they delved into matters that are already two years old. They could have dealt with this even before the former chief’s resignation, say, when he was appointed PNP chief. In addition, I don’t see why it’s broadcast as news; to me, it belongs more to a feature program than news. Does it interest the public? To me, I don’t think so; if anything, what matters to the public is, I think, matters that are DIRECTLY related to the Fallen 44: the senate probe, personalities and their relation to the incident, NOT a background check/history lesson.
    2) Sources aren’t clearly mentioned; they may have shown snippets of archived footage, but no acknowledgement of their source/s. Plus they didn’t have direct accounts for their information. In that sense, without having direct sources, they made it fairly neutral.

  8. The news report I watched was from Bandila about the student named Liam Madamba who committed suicide. In the website of Abs-cbn news, the headline of the report is “’Bully’ teacher blamed for scholar’s death.” I believe that it is unnecessary to place the word ‘bully’ before the word teacher since it antagonizes her and it may mislead the the viewers. They did not even showed us a statement from the teacher. Majority of the report was from the side of the student’s mother and his friends. The news report was not balanced violating the SPJ Code of Ethics. They should have provided much information from different sources which is also stated in the code of ethics. I believe that it is the reporter’s responsibility to deliver facts and leave the judgment to the viewers.
Throughout the news report, the identity of the teacher was not exposed. The pictures that were shown were also blurred. They should have at least explained why they have kept the teacher’s identity in anonymity.

In this preview of Rated K’s episode, products and movies were endorsed all at once in just the span of one commercial of the said news program. Rated K has been known as a magazine broadcast, in this particular episode, they have decided to advertise very timely products; such as flowers, chocolates. and even the newest movie up coming this February of the Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla love team.

In this particular episode, owners and manufacturers of the products featured were even interviewed. These are advertisements hidden as news articles. Simply, the attempt of the publicizing the certain chocolate or flower among all the other competitors in the market is enough basis to say that this is a misconduct in the form of advertising in a news editorial.

The article not only mentioned the SC order but also provided context as to the original issue (SPJ Code of Ethics, “Seek Truth and Report It”). However, it failed to include comments from DMCI and only interviewed supporters of the Cease and Desist Order (PPI Code of Ethics, “I recognize the duty to air the other side and the duty to correct substantive errors promptly”).

  11. Hi ma’am, I posted it on the wrong post last night.

Media Monitor for this week: Comm 110

The GMA news report about Marwan’s allies allegedly expanding their network in Mindanao, which can be found in the link http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/432334/news/nation/exclusive-marwan-s-wards-expanding-terror-network-in-mindanao-report is, in my opinion, is inaptly titled. The word “wards” used in the headline is misleading—the author could have just simply used the term “allies”, which is more commonly used. In addition to this, there is little background to the supposed “wards” that are expanding networks in Mindanao—the rest of the article focuses on the misencounter and opens a new topic altogether (about the terrorism plot during the Pope’s visit), which is separated using a subheading. Since the online news articles on the issue in Mamasapano do not in general contribute anything new or provide a new angle or point of view to the issue (aside from the POV’s of those who have been established as directly involved in the issue) save for this one, it would have been much better if the title was centered on that new angle.

An article on Channel News Asia which was entitled Tikoy selling like hotcakes ahead of Chinese New Year in the Philippines seemed to be a legitimate news report. It mentioned that as the Chinese New Year approaches, the demand for tikoy or ‘nian gao” keeps increasing.
However, the article soon mentioned the Eng Bee Tin factory which manufactures and sells tikoy. It also said that people flock from all over the Philippines and even from Hong Kong to buy their tikoy. The article also emphasized that Eng Bee Tin’s tikoy comes in many flavors and that the recipe for their tikoy took almost 100 years to perfect. It sounds like the article is promoting this particular brand of tikoy. This is an ethical violation of the principle that says journalists should clearly distinguish between advertising and news.

We can see that it violates a provision from the SPJ Code of Ethics that says “Distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two. 14. “Lucky Chinatown Mall welcomes Year of the Sheep with lucky rituals; ‘tikoy’ museum set to open in Ongpin” is an article posted earlier today at Interaksyon.com. At first, I thought that “Lucky Chinatown Mall” was a general description of a commercial building that celebrated Chinese New Year in effort to avoid making the article seem like an advertisement. However, reading through the text, I find out that it was the actual name of the mall and immediately, one would identify an ethical violation committed. Aside from the title, the text itself also contain statements which evidently aim to promote the mall. Some of the few things mentioned were the presence of celebrities, lucky rituals booths, and the anticipation of the “Tikoy Museum”.

I believe that articles regarding the Chinese New Year or any other celebration are significant as they tell us stories about the celebration, and probably important moments; however, it is always improper to use the news as a tool for advertisement. If the main objective of the author was to deliver news on how the event was celebrated, he should have just mentioned the actual happenings, asked for the testimonies of the people, and refrained from mentioning the name of the mall, as well as interview the people affiliated with it, to avoid subjectivity.

Being a news organization, despite being in the lifestyle section, I don’t think there’s a need to mention and/or show products from specific businesses just to illustrate the subject matter, which, in this case, are 10 lucky food items for the Chinese New Year. Establishments such as Lechon Macau, Buddy’s, and Eng Bee Tin have been mentioned in said article/multimedia gallery, and is clearly in violation of a provision from the SPJ Code of Ethics: “Distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two. Prominently label sponsored content.”

    [Chinese New Year Advertorial]

Nilabag nito ang isa sa mga probisyon ng SPJ Code of ethics na “distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines between the two.”
