The video entitled “Must-visit Summer Destinations” by Bandila uploaded in Youtube reported about a healing water spring in Mountain Province, a white sand beach in Pangasinan, and another beach in Dapitan City. The reporting of the first two venues, for me, was unethical. Regarding the spring with healing water, I think it was sensationalized because based on the interviews gathered, only one person claimed to be healed after drinking water from the spring. It is even tagged as a place as suitable for the Holy Week, which gives an idea to the audience that the supernatural occurrence, if true, is related to the Christian Faith or so. Next, the beach in Pangasinan was explicitly mentioned (Tondol White Sand Beach). The entrance fee of five pesos was also stated.
The report is unethical because it somehow encourages belief in supernatural occurrence which is not even supported by many sources. It also advertised a beach resort by naming it in the news itself and mentioning the entrance fee which implicitly encourages the people to go there because of its affordable price. The writers should be more careful of these details because even if the report is a special segment of the program, it still shouldn’t be subjective.

This video from the news program “24 Oras” is about what happened during the Mamasapano incident. This shows the clash between the 84th Seaborne and the other faction from the place. This violates Artilce 1 (News and Public Affairs) of the KBP Code of Ethics which states that ‘morbid, violent, sensational or alarming details not essential to a factual report are prohibited”.
The news segment should have not included clips from the actual video because it somewhat contains violent scenes which may not be suitable for very young audiences and other demographics. They should have included a warning before showing the whole segment.

The article dissects the issues regarding the Mamasapano Encounter, applying what I see as a leftist approach to the subject matter. From the negative criticism of the operation (OPLAN EXODUS), which does have its merits, down to just bashing the big names behind the issue, especially Aquino and company, the article just slams the entire operation from all fronts, not even acknowledging its merits, one of which is that they’ve done what they were supposed to accomplish, although at a cost. All of these seem overboard for a news article…but it’s not; it’s an opinion article. However, seeing the very leftist approach on the matter, it’s unclear whether the author is leftist or is involved in similar groups; no such disclosure was made. If you’re not keen on reading the address bar of the site, some people might mistake this for news, and blur the line between opinion and fact.

The following video clip shows scenes of the question and answer portion during the Bb. Pilipinas 2015 Coronation night, hosted by Xian Lim and Toni Gonzaga. What made this video interesting were the sidecomments Toni made during the show. These remarks intended to be humorous, such as singing the song Chandelier (by Sia) in reference to one of contestant’s earrings. She also poked fun on one judge’s and another contestant’s surnames, Go and Catacutan respectively. Another instance would be how she pretended to be one of the contestants during the Q&A while saying the overused line, “Thank you for answering that question…”
Her comic remarks lasted throughout the night and they were about different things such as commenting on a contestant’s hair, or how one contestant looked like her, or another play on names. She was able to elicit laughs from the audience yet her performance appeared to make the event sound less formal and to poke fun at everyone in the show. While it did not appear that her hosting explicitly or intentionally offended anyone, there still seems to be an ethical dilemma since her decorum was awkward for the event. The comedy relief was there for the purpose of entertainment but the delivery of it could have been more improved in not making her sidecomments too unnecessary.

Toni Gonzaga’s hosting stint during the Bb Pilipinas 2015 pageant held at the Araneta Coliseum on March 15, 2015 was, in my opinion, a show of lack of professionalism on her part. We would usually expect formal spiels during prestigious pageants such as the Binibing Pilipinas, but during the entirety of the show, she was either commenting on irrelevant details about the contestants (in a highly sarcastic manner), made self-deprecating jokes that surely entertained the crowd but were too self-indulgent (such as giving her own answers to some of the contestants’ questions during the question-and-answer portion), and made other ridiculous comments that made me wonder whether she was under the influence of alcohol during the pageant.

I know that a lot of Filipinos are interested to know about life of Manny Pacquiao, but this is actually a waste of 4 minutes of air time. Purchasing a house is something that should be done privately . Dianne Castillejo is a known sports news anchor and is always the one who covers the training sessions and fights of Pacman, but the video just showed her interviewing Pacquiao, the broker and the owners of the house. The coverage is clearly a stint to promote the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight on May, but they should have thought of an angle that is more inclined to the sport itself, not on the private lives of the athletes. The Philippines is in need of entertainment, yes, but I think that there are more suitable and relevant news that the public needs to know.

The recently concluded Binibining Pilipinas was held last Sunday, March 15, 2014 which was co-hosted by the former Binibining Pilipinas Winners, also hosted by Xian Lim and the controversial Toni Gonzaga. In the said event, Toni Gonzaga has accroding to many netizens showed unprofessionalism and has degraded the formality of the event with her sarcasm and never-ending jokes as her form of entertaining the audience during the pageant.
What I like about this news report done by ABS-CBN is that they have showed transparency in terms that they have published an honest report about the sympathy of the people regarding the issue. They have not tried protecting Toni Gonzaga being one of the station’s biggest talent today, instead they have written a brief report saying what has to be said to what happened.
