Last week, when I went home to Laguna, I saw this tarpaulin in front of our barangay’s elementary school. It’s really big. I estimated it to be at least 1.5 meters wide and 1 meter long. At the center of the tarp is a portrait of San Luis, surrounded by the words “Nagmamalasakit”, “Naninindigan”, “Egay San Luis sa Laguna” and “2016”.

I was so surprised and of course, dismayed. I asked my mother when was that tarpaulin displayed. She said it was either the last week of September or first week of October. The posting of such publicity material is so early, and even though it doesn’t directly say “Vote!” or anything along those lines, the citizens of our barangay are of course not that naive to not look at that tarpaulin as campaign material. Actually, the word “2016” gives it away. Also, the fact that it was placed in front of a school, a place with guaranteed people seeing it, is clever (which I don’t appreciate).

Egay San Luis will be running as 4th district representative of Laguna (https://www.facebook.com/ANCalerts/photos/a.266154773790.143592.262155953790/10153368938033791/?type=3). The start of campaign season for local candidates will start on March next year. There’s RA 9006 that explains the rules for fair election practices, but with how the politicians use the media as early as now for the masses to already remember their names, the COMELEC has the authority to call them out but the people have to be vigilant on their own.

My Faithful Husband almost always has an SPG rating because of its theme sexual content. However, this episode was highly SPG because of the theme, language, violence and sex and nudity. And the link clearly shows why this episode should be an SPG.

It has a clear depiction of a crime committed using a weapon and it shows the prolonged suffering of the victim. For me, it is indeed gory and it is not suitable for young audiences even with a guardian or an elderly around. My Faithful Husband is aired at 9:15PM. Some children are still awake during this time and seeing this kind of scene in a teleserye before they sleep might not be good for them.

Halloween is fast approaching and articles such as this are starting to enter the picture. Different news and feature stories become filled up with supernatural and mysterious tales, usually ones about ghosts or spirits. Of course, this is due to the fact that it is what catches the human interest. It is unavoidable. Nevertheless, news networks and publications should be careful and reporting stories such as these and present them in a way that they are not forcing the people to believe in them. I think the article above (despite of it being really poorly written and constructed) did not actually induce belief in the supernatural or occult. It is merely telling about the spots where hikers can go to “ghost-hunt.” However, it is a proof that creepy and spooky stories are about to bombard us again this coming November.

The Varsitatian is the official student publication of UST therefore, many subscribe to their Facebook page to await news. It so happens that the Varsitarian had an event and of course created publicity materials for their said event. The said publicity materials were then posted on their Facebook page along with the caption inviting people for their event about creating quality journalism.

The pubmats they created received quite a lot of attention not because they were exeptional but because the concept was similar to an art created by a person named as Max Reyes. They were bashed by the public. Even UST students went against the Varsitarian.

The pubmats were then put down. The Varsitarian also apologized right after to Max Reyes because of the issue. No one is sure if what they did was intentional. They used the concept of Max’s art without giving her credit therefore doing an act of plagiarism. However, they did apologize for their fault which is what was due and what was written in the Code of Ethics.

Midnight Stories are being posted on the lifestyle section of GMA News Online every evening of October to celebrate Halloween and ghost stories. The stories posted are written by GMA news writers; however, these stories are from other people who are sometimes anonymous. I looked for the very first story posted online to check if there are any warning on the occult. Unfortunately, I didn’t find anything. I only saw this: “It’s back! Midnight Stories will be posted every evening of October to celebrate the month of ghosties and ghoulies and things that go bump in the night. Here’s our first story. Enjoy!”

It is undeniable that there would be lots of news and feature stories about ghost stories since it is almost Halloween. But, I think the online publication should have at least written a warning before or even after the article to avoid the inducement of belief that ghosts exist. Also, they should have taken into consideration the fact that some people are easily swayed by beliefs ans stories. GMA News Online should have stated that the article is just a story of someone. And, it is not 100% factual.

    Headless student caught on camera

    Link: http://pinoytrending.altervista.org/headless-student-caught-on-camera/

This article is about a picture with a headless student in the background. This photo was posted on Facebook. Though the article leaves room for inference, it still may convince some people that these stories of supernatural occurrences are perfectly true. The way it was written and its content could have been structured better. The line “But other people and paranormal experts were convinced that the photo is not edited” could have been elaborated more. They could have given the names of these experts and included a few quotes from them to add credibility.

The article also has various grammatical errors. Aside from this, the writer made it appear that there is a correlation between the appearance of the headless student and the death of another in the same school: “The most horrifying is when they got a news that one of the student of their school died on an accident hours after the headless student appeared to them.”

Also, it is not clear what kind of article this is. They should have specified if the article was submitted to them or if it was written by those from the site. They did not label.

This was a reportage of a video with a monobloc chair seemingly moving on its own that went viral, with over a million views on the web. That must be the primary reason why it became a news subject with 1:44 minutes of screen time dedicated to it. They even went as far as to interview the man who was in the footage, with a blow-by-blow narration of the footage–complete with dissonant scary strings.

The newscaster introducing it disclaimed that it was “palaisipan”, but I don’t think it was relevant enough to be reported on. These videos are easily imitated. With a low-resolution camera and a thin string tied around the leg of the monobloc chair, anyone can easily fabricate this video. They just assumed that the video was true and asserted, “minulto o pinaglaruan”? But the way they interviewed the subject made it sound like a ghost. Even the sound design of the footage with strings that added suspense made it seem frightening and shocking to viewers, so it does bend KBP Broadcast Code’s Art. 13, Sec. 1. And they only mentioned that the video went viral towards the end of the article and the report. I just don’t think this is relevant or important enough to dedicate 1:44 minutes to.

    Link to Reference: http://www.newser.com/story/214956/site-tells-homebuyers-if-their-new-house-could-be-haunted.html

The news article above talks about a website called “DiedinHouse.com” where potential homebuyers can search for murders, suicides, suspicious or natural deaths, fires, and meth labs at an address before purchasing the house. The site was started by Roy Condroy two years ago, who thought his house might be haunted and wanted to find out if anyone had ever died there.

I do feel that the article could be construed as trying to induce belief in the idea of supernatural forces – just starting with its headline. Although Condroy created the website in part because of his curiosity with the paranormal, it cannot in any way determine if your “new house could be haunted” which the headline clearly tries to infer. Moreover, the fact that users are being charged $11.99 per search means that it’s essentially being falsely marketed to a different crowd. One which, sadly, can be easily exploited without the need for any proof or facts to back it up.
