Poe, Duterte, Binay ‘tied’ for top spot – Laylo poll
Source: http://www.rappler.com/nation/politics/elections/2016/124904-laylo-survey-poe-duterte-binay-statistically-tied
This survey was conducted by Laylo Research Strategies, a company that focuses on polls and strategic researching, and according to the Standard Poll, says that Poe, Duterte, and Binay are “statistically tied” for first place in the presidential race, whereas Roxas is coming in on second place.
This report on the survey was actually written very well. According to the PPI Expanded Code of Ethics, “Beware of surveys; statistical data derived from polling and surveying is especially susceptible to misunderstanding”. This report however was very concise and straight to the point. More importantly, the report showed the margin of error, the number of respondents, and the most important, showed that 3 of the candidates were statistically tied for first place. This is one of the few reports on surveys where I have seen that phrase being used.
However, one thing the report left out, which is a very important information, is the question the poll asked. Of course, we could assume that the question was “if you were to vote today, who would you vote for president”, or somewhere along that line. However, since we can’t assume, it was a shame that they didn’t put the question they used for the poll.

The video link above is a GMA News report on the murder of a mother and child in Sta. Rosa Laguna. The news report discussed in detail how the crime was implemented (details on how suspects pretended to be internet repairmen from Globe, from creating a fake ID using a real Globe technician’s Facebook profile photo to tricking the victims into believing they actually were repairmen). This is an ethical violation of the SPJ code of ethics since the news report could potentially promote future similar crimes due to it giving people a detailed idea on how to carry out the same crimes. GMA News should have omitted the detailed explanation on how the crime was carried out in order to minimize harm. The information on the implementation of the crime was unnecessary.

The article is about how the it is not yet safe for residents of Datu Salibo to return to their homes because of the many littered improvised bombs in the area. The military explains that these bombs can be triggered by anyone and residents should be kept away from the area as much as possible to avoid danger. The article violates the SPJ code of ethics in a sense that it doesn’t “minimize harm” with its headline. I think the article itself was not violating any SPJ code of ethic because it was written in a way that it “balanced the public’s need for information against potential harm or discomfort.” It was the headline that was the one that alarmed me, almost like a click-bait title.

Roxas blasts Binay for flip-flopping on 4Ps
http://www.rappler.com/nation/politics/elections/2016/125107-roxas-binay-4ps
This article by Rappler was very one sided. Hence, only Mar Roxas’ point view was presented. The said presidential candidate was very blunt in criticizing his opponent, VP Jejomar Binay. Hence, it is very important to get two sides of the story. However, the author did not make effort to get the side of Binay regarding this issue. This violates PPI Expanded Ethics which states that all efforts must be done in order to make stories fair, accurate, and balanced.
Moreover, PPI said that equal prominence to rebuttals and clarification from persons and agencies criticized in written stories must be given. In this case, the writer fails to give balanced and fair news.

http://www.rappler.com/nation/politics/elections/2016/125175-binay-biggest-gainer-poe-disqualified?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=referral
This article is about a survey conducted to know the top two presidential candidates preferences of the people, however, in the headline one would assume that this is not the case. The first parts of the article and even the headline suggested that Binay could benefit if Poe was disqualified (which is not the case because of the SC Ruling). While reading the article, the title is somehow misleading as to what the survey tries to imply, showing a suggestive angle to the viewers of the site.
PPI Expanded Code of Ethics states that “Beware of surveys; statistical data derived from polling and surveying is especially susceptible to misunderstanding”. This article is one of these surveys that can be twisted depending on how it was framed.
