Last Aug 28., Philippines Star published an article in their website about the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) ordering the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) to Php 12 billion refund to its customers in Mindanao. They further said that NGCP can implement the refund in 12 months or Php 1.05 billion per month. Here is the link to the article http://www.philstar.com/business/2014/08/28/1362397/erc-ngcp-refund-p12-b-mindanao-customers. The next day, Philippine star published an erratum wherein they corrected that it was not Php 12 billion but only Php 12 million, therefore, only Php 1.05 million per month. http://www.philstar.com/business/2014/08/29/1362879/erratum (Link to the erratum)
I think that Philippine Star followed the KBP Code of Ethics article 5 about correcting mistakes, well since they published an erratum at once, the day after the article was published. As said in the code, they rectified their mistakes as soon as possible. They corrected it clearly, stating the mistake and making the corrections

Last saturday, September 6, an incident happened in a condominium swimming pool in Quezon City. A 4-year-old boy named “Gab” drowned. On the date of publication of the news article which was last September 10, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit was still investigating on the possible causes of the incident- whether or not it was a mere accident or there was someone involved in the crime. According to the family, they saw from the CCTV footage from the pool area a bigger child elbowing Gab and then dunking him in the pool. However, when they asked to view the CCTV footage again, they said that there were missing segments from the video. Because the incident couldn’t yet be identified as accident or crime, the author of the news article from Yahoo! decided not to disclose the identity of the victim.
This is an example of good journalism practice. As much as possible, names of minors shouldn’t be disclosed unless given the consent of the family or what happened was an accident.

Above is a Yahoo! article about a seven-year-old girl found dead, stabbed and naked in Pandacan, Manila. The girl went missing around 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, and was found dead two days later near Quirino Highway, Barangay 845. Five men are being investigated by the Manila Police District based on their appearance on the CCTV camera, and a footage of the child playing in the same location was also shown. The article was written briefly but clearly. It was very factual and the facts given were confirmed by the authorities. The child’s name and her family’s information were not disclosed to the press, which is important because the privacy of the victim is a privacy of someone that is a child, and it is a must for media practitioners to always consider and respect everyone’s privacy and rights, especially defenseless children’s.
These ethical issues about protection and children’s rights (especially in disclosing information) must not only be applied to those who are still alive, but also to those who died in the phase of childhood. It is a coverage involving children after all.

[REPORT:http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/video/217584/qrt/tatlong-menor-de-edad-ginahasa-umano-ng-69-anyos-na-lolo%5D
This news report by Jiggy Manicad is about a 69-year-old man who raped three children aged 8, 7, and 3. It is a sensitive news because first, it is about rape and second, it involves children of very young ages. It is good that the video did not show the faces of the victims. The report only showed very blurred footages. This is in obedience to the Expanded Journalist Code of Ethics saying, “The identities and photographs of children and women who figure in the news as victims of sexual abuse must not be printed, and details about their personal circumstances and identities must not be withheld” and the Guiding Principles of Journalists to “be cautious about identifying suspects or victims of sex crime.”
Presumption of innocence was provided in a sense that, the suspect’s name wasn’t revealed and his shots were also blurred. However, the thing I noticed about this report was that, they did not properly air the response or explanation of the suspect. Barely 2 seconds was given to the suspect’s side (i.e. “Itinanggi ng suspect ang paratang.”). They aired both sides of the conflict but it would have been better if they appropriated a few more seconds for the suspect.

AQUINO SEEKS “ADDITIONAL POWERS” TO SOLVE ENERGY WOES
Looking at the news headline, the reader may actually think that President Aquino is actually seeking for additional political power aside from the power of being a president of the country.
The issue was about asking the Congress for a joint resolution to let the national government address the energy deficit. He made this announcement on the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of Pagbilao Plant which will be operational by 2017.
The soundbite for the video was PNoy asking the Congress for “authority” to address the expected power deficit. The “additional powers” on the headline was not contextualized very well, and as news consumers, it might be very misleading.
“News production aids should not mislead the public.” – KBP Code of Ethics
I think this is a mild case of misleading the public (since I was misled by it), but as media practitioners, there should be careful choice of words when writing headlines. It is because sometimes, people do not take time to read the whole text or even listen to news, and what they pick up from the headline is what it is.

In a news article published by Rappler entitled, “FORMER ALLY: VP BINAY GOT 13% FROM MAKATI PROJECTS” there was a brief detailing of the current controversies faced by the Binay family. The statements featured, were from the former vice mayor of Makati, Ernesto Mercado. I’d like to point out how this article was able to give sufficient information regarding the issue. Both sides of the story were featured. The writer was able to get the side of both parties. The comments of the Vice president’s daughter as well as his lawyer were aired and not only the side of Mercado who accused the Vice President.

In this article published in Pang-Masa of Philstar, the story was about an 18-year old, 2nd year college student, taking up Hotel and Restaurant Management in Sibugay Technical Institute Incorporated, who was allegedly raped by two policemen in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.
As I read the article, I was deeply concerned with the welfare of the poor victim. The details about the victim is so specific that, I assume, if I study in or near that school, I would exactly know who the victim was. I would just filter all who are 18-years old HRM students. I even searched details about the school and it is UNSURPRISINGLY small. I doubt the number of HRM students would even reach a hundred.
Journalists should be minimizing harm on the victim’s part, instead of putting her image and identity at risk by providing too much specific details about her. Yes, journalists should be able to provide complete details in news stories. But in this case, a sex crime that our constitution brands very much sensitive, too much exposure would bring more trauma and danger on the person harmed.

Hi Ma’am. This is my bonus media monitor.
Last September 11, abs-cbnnews.com released an online article entitled “Jinx? La Salle’s loss not Jane’s fault, Jeron says.”
This article was written under the sports news. The content of this news is about Jeron Teng defending Jane Oineza (PBB housemate) for being blamed for the loss of La Salle. Posted here are the tweets of Jeron saying “Our loss was on us, the whole team. Nothing else.”, “I don’t see how it’s the fault of someone who didn’t even play and is not part of the team.lol.”
According to the code of ethics, journalists should show good taste when creating a news story. For me, I find this one unethical because of two reasons. First, this story was written under the Sports News, however I can see that it’s not really about the game about La Salle and UE. It’s more of the “love story drama” of Jeron and Jane. The article did not even contain the clash of the two teams. It’s only in the latter part where there score was written. Second, I think ABS-CBN used this news to market their star. After entering the PBB House, this was a kind of a stepping stone for Jane to create noise again since she’s being court by a well-known UAAP basketball player.
