Quote “Last Saturday,June 30, 2007 at around 8:30 p.m., a show in GMA-7 entitled Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho violated children’s rights as well as the Journalistic Code of Ethics when they showed the face of a seven year old child. The topic was about abandoned babies and one of the people that they featured was a child named Sam.

Quote “Sam was abandoned in Quezon City Circle when she was a baby. Since then she had been cared for by her foster parents who found her. Sam’s face as well as her full name, _____ (name deleted by blog administrator for legal and ethical reasons), was shown on television. This is a clear violation since it was stated in the expanded code of Journalism that the identities of children must be withheld. The child should have been protected especially since the story is quite sensitive. The stigma that the child might receive after coming out of the show might prove to be traumatizing to her as she grows up since a lot of people now know that she was abandoned.

Quote “Her right as a child was also violated when the show disclosed her identity since under our laws her identity should have been protected in order for her to live a normal life like any other children. What the show, “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho”, should have done was blur her face or least pixilated so people would not recognize her identity.

Quote “Under the headline “First Gentleman meets scholars in Malacanang,” the story focused on presidential spouse Jose Miguel Arroyo’s post-surgery condition rather than the batch of medical students who are to receive the grant.

Quote “Even more preposterous was its lead: “I’m a walking miracle,” Arroyo said. He then told the students that he is now 20 lbs. lighter and thus feels ten years younger. And to put context to the story, it ended with the announcement of Arroyo’s 61st birthday. July 4.” Closed-quote.

Quote “I always ride the MRT, and this gives me close encounters with the gigantic billboards along EDSA. But the one that catches my attention is Roxanne Guinoo’s billboard of White Castle 69. In this huge advertisement, the image of the alcoholic drink is in the right side, Guinoo riding a horse is at the center, while another image of Guinoo is in the right side, in her red two-piece bikini. Aside from her indecent clothing, she is holding the bottle of White Castle 69 near her genital organ.

Quote “This bollboard (sic) violates Article IV, Section 1, Numbers 5 and 6 of the Advertising Code of Ethics. It says that: “Indecent exposure of the human body, and suggestive portrayals shall not be allowed.” and “Advertisement should not exploit persons as sex objects and should not carry any sexual double entendres.” In this advertisement, Guinoo is wearing only a two-piece bikini, and I really cannot understand why she has to hold the product near her genital organ. Of course, this can lead people, especially men, to look near her genital organ. This also suggest a double meaning. For me, it says that having White Castle 69 is almost the same as having a sexual intercourse with a woman. This billboard also presents women, especially Roxanne Guinoo, as sex objects. As we all know, the primary market of alcoholic beverages is men. And having Guinoo as its endorser, with the kind of context used in the advertisement, clearly states that White Castle 69 projects women as sex objects for men and that they can be used in selling products aimed for men.

Quote “Celebrities, big stars and famous personalities, all have become part of every Filipino’s lives. With the advent of advertising, market players embark on ways to improve their sales and marketing strategies. Market players thought of using the fame of celebrities to push the sales of their products higher. They thought of having these big stars endorse their products so that those people who idolize them will patronize the products as well. Thus, there came the trend of celebrity endorsements. Whatever channel on television, there appears the same commercials being aired over and over which obviously is an indication of how effective the endorsement is and most especially, of how that particular celebrity endorsing the product affected or influenced the packaging of the product. That is why we start to think, is the celebrity culture in the Philippines is such a big hype that every product the stars we idolize endorse we end up buying or using them as we think they do too?

Quote “But, one interesting or should I say, innovative commercial is being aired today on television. It is the Bio-flu commercial wherein a father gives his sick son a medicine and stayed beside him all night to take care of him. It is a different commercial because we can see here a father, instead of a mother, who nurtures and takes good care of his son. Aside from this, there is no celebrity who needs to endorse the product. The simple image of the caring father itself is enough to raise the emotions of the viewers and make them consider buying the product.

Quote “For me, the Bio-flu is not just a new trend in advertising. It is also a positive reflection of the Filipino culture, the Filipinos’ high regard of the family.” Closed-quote.End of entry above. xxxxxx

A news story turned music video: student12 on ABS-CBN Bandila’s handling of Kris-James-Hope triangle

Quote “Last February 26, ABS-CBN’s half-hour news show Bandila ran an interview with Kris A q u i n o and James Yap by news anchor Korina S a n c h e z. It ran about 4 minutes more than its other segments. After that, the show ran a 15-second video montage of the couple prior to their public feud while a melodramatic song with the lyrics “Stay Together” were distinctly heard in the background, complete with wailing violins.                             Quote “Bandila, as a news program, gave IMPROPER EMPHASIS to an issue that, in the first place, has little or no public interest.

Quote “Running the dramatic montage and insinuating with the song that the couple must stay together is blatant SENSATIONALISM, not essential to the factual report, which is a violation of KBP’s TV Code on News Program standards. There is also a question of conflict of interest since their news subject, Kris A q u i n o is one of their contract stars. By running the montage, the show was editorializing. It was the station’s (or program’s, or news writer’s) own OPINION or COMMENT that the couple should stay together, but the segment was not properly identified as such.” Unquote.

Quote “Since the issue about Kris Aquino, James Yap and the Belo receptionist, Hope Centeno came out; media couldn’t escape this controversy being the talk of the town (sic, awkward, unidiomatic). Various forms of media (sic) keep on covering the series of events in this issue (sic, awkward) and even the Inquirer couldn’t detach itself from what we know as sensationalism.
quote “For consecutive days (sic, awkward), this love-triangle topic could be seen in the front page of the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI). The PDI Feb. 27, Tuesday publication had again this story in the front page but it was labeled as an (sic) entertainment.

quote “The fact that the article was labeled as an (sic) entertainment, it is more justifiable (sic) to place it in the entertainment page. It is important to consider the news elements and some criteria that should be found in various articles to be appropriate in the front page. The element of news worthy (sic, use the noun-form) is the first thing that must stand out in a front page article. What would be the benefit of the public in this love-triangle story aside from entertainment?
quote “Kris Aquino is a “big” person in the showbiz industry aside from her family background which gave (sic, tense not consistent)  her prominence. But prominence of a person is not sufficient because it is always attached to the event. In the world of showbiz, the third- party thing is basically not new at all. It is an ordinary thing nowadays.
quote “This issue became news because of the public interest which is tolerated by media for the sake of rating. This only shows how media organizations prioritize this story for their interest. Sensationalism is a form of violation because it is a form of magnifying issues for the sake of ratings/profits, without considering the news values.

quote “If the subject itself commit a violation, this article entitled, Hope: I’ve said everything I wanted to say violates the first provision of the Journalist’s Code of Ethics. The title doesn’t suit the content of the article because it deals more on how the coverage of this story affects the two giant stations, ABS-CBN and GMA. Instead of discussing Hope’s statement in connection with the title, the article overemphasized the outcome of this issue to ABS CBN and GMA.

quote “PDI’s approach on this matter aims to expose the competition that’s going on between the two stations. It can be seen in the sub-stories of this article. Another thing to notice (sic, awkward) is the inclusion of unreliable statistics to justify their claim that “The Buzz” was the winner in the ratings for the Sunday afternoon talk shows that covered this story. They didn’t show any demographics to strengthen their statement because the basis of their assertion came from SMS ( Text-Messaging etc.). This again, goes against the provision of the expanded code of ethics regarding the use of statistics.” Unquote.
